Syndication 3.0, from NewsCred and NewsLook to Ok.com and Upworthy

Syndication 3.0, from NewsCred and NewsLook to Ok.com and Upworthy | Content Curation Tools For Brands | Scoop.it
August 3, 2012. The web may make syndication easier, but it hasn't yet made it into a great business. A new wave of startups are trying to change that...

Therese's comment: Ken Doctor, author of newsonomics , reviews the "news syndication 3.0" start-up which are trying to make news and video syndication a viable business - which repeatedly failed before. He sees potential in content syndication for brands as by NewsCred:

"The brand use of news content has a bigger potential. Check out several case histories, showing the use Pepsi, Orange Telecom, and Lenovo has made of NewsCred-distributed entertainment and tech content. Brands are publishers and want an easy, one-source way to populate their sites. [...] Figuring out how to create content experiences for brands-turned-publishers is one part of the syndication puzzle."

Zeen: New Curation Tool In Private Beta - TheNextWeb | Content Curation Tools For Brands | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Zeen, the new app from the original founder of YouTube is finally coming, and it has opened its doors to private beta users.

On paper and by looking at the first screenshots, Zeen promises to be a curation-publishing platform similar to the new Paper.li, Storify and Scoop.it, but without any new revolutionary feature or improvement over those existing platforms.

Create, Discover, Share And Monetize Content With New Curation iOS App: QI Post

Create, Discover, Share And Monetize Content With New Curation iOS App: QI Post | Content Curation Tools For Brands | Scoop.it

Giuseppe Mauriello: The goal of this new iOS app (beta invite only now) is new approach to journalism redefining the way people create, discover, share and monetize content

From QI Post: [...] Our vision is to create a socially relevant, transparent, dynamic and self-sustaining "editorial ecosystem" that as users, we would want.

We curate contents based on how well they are received by the editor community – that is, you and other QI users. The more attention a story captures, the more relevant it becomes to QI users, and the more media value the QI Contributor gains. All you need to do is find the stories that interest you, and enjoy them. We'll capture the content popularity, and compensate the contributors accordingly. We call this "crowd-curation".

Human-Curated Search and Data-Driven Comparisons: FindTheBest

Human-Curated Search and Data-Driven Comparisons: FindTheBest | Content Curation Tools For Brands | Scoop.it

Robin Good: FindTheBest is a good example of an emerging wave of alternatives search engines, not based exclusively on algorithms but also on curated human selection and review.

"...it is a hybrid search engine — a combination of data-sifting algorithms and human curators.

The humans define the categories, design how information is presented and determine what ingredients of comparison — or attributes — are most meaningful to users."

Contently’s Code of Ethics for Journalism and Content Marketing

Contently’s Code of Ethics for Journalism and Content Marketing | Content Curation Tools For Brands | Scoop.it

Information is the most valuable commodity of our time. We have an obligation to provide it accurately...

Therese's comment: Great reminder of principles of journalistic honesty, integrity, accountability, and responsibility that all content professionals should abide by.

Examples

- Acknowledge facts that may compromise the integrity of a story or opinion

- Minimize potential harm to sources or subjects of stories

- Expose truth as fully as possible

- Always credit sources of content or ideas, never plagiarizing or repurposing stories or prose, whether one’s own or another’s, whether written content, photography, or other media, whether the original source is known or not.

- Fulfill promises made to contributors and sources in the course of reporting...

5 Curating Secrets From @ScentTrail

5 Curating Secrets From @ScentTrail | Content Curation Tools For Brands | Scoop.it

Martin (Marty) Smith: I have a few curating tricks or secrets I haven't seen widely written or shared. This doesn't mean much better, smarter curators like Michele, Robin or Brian don't know and practice these ideas, but I haven't seen posts on them so decided to share.

Marty's 5 Secret Curation Tips

1. Curate What Is Happening NOW [...]
2. Near Real Time Beats All Other Time [...]

3. Infographics Rock Traffic [...]
4. Create A Leaderboard [...]
5. Say Thank You [...]
Thanks everyone here ends my first 5 Marty Curation Secrets (lol).

Therese's comment: Couldn't agree more. Still have to implement some of these tips, especially #4

TY to everyone for picking up this post. Guillaume, thanks to your new beautiful look and feel I am driving a lot more traffic into the master Revolutions page: http://www.scoop.it/u/martin-marty-smith.

Is there anyway to create a "follow all" button? It takes WORK right now to follow all 12 revolutions. I appreciate the placement of the follow @ScentTrail button, but its hierarchy makes it look like it is the equivalent of a Follow All button.

I guess it is sort of since I do tweet updates across all revolutions, but it feels a little piecemeal, confusing and HARD now. Once you bring Twitter in, and I am in NO WAY saying remove it (lol), it gets confused with the magazine. The main issue, a visitor's desire to follow all, is left to those willing to do the click-y work.

Here again I wouldn't eliminate choice I would just find a way to create less friction with a SUPER CHOICE of Follow All. The other reason I see this button as beneficial is what it does for Scoop.it. Once your database has me tagged as a FOLLOW ALL on X, Y and Z topics relevant suggestions are just around the corner. Sure you can move downstream from the individual choices but seems like a lot more work. Once you get into predictive analytics you will be able to tune the presentation based on how your visitors arrive and eliminate some choices in favor of higher conversions.

Agree with how you've started, at the lowest detail level, but you've now created a new problem - I want to USE that beautiful visual master page more. In order to do that I need it to start to function more like a site (more subscription choices, taxonomy power and grouping as we've discussed).

I still haven't been able to get my hand all the way around what it means to be the HUB of my social network marketing, but working on it. Stay tuned (lol) and thanks for the Rescoop.

Tools for Taming the Media - All Things Digital

Tools for Taming the Media - All Things Digital | Content Curation Tools For Brands | Scoop.it

June 27 2012, AllThingsDigital [...] "asked a couple of power users — Clay Shirky and John Battelle — to share their go-to media apps" for content curation...

Therese's comment: Very interesting to see that power users use relatively classic tools like Google alerts, RSS readers like Netvibes, aggregators like Flipboard, social bookmarking  sites like Reddit, emails from News.me, thelistserve, Netvibes, News.Me, Shrook, Slashdot, TechMeme, The Browser, thelistserve.com, Twitter... and human curators they trust like Conor Friedersdorf.

I love this quote by Clay Shorky: "The trick is to adopt both tools and practices that maximize elevance instead of volume, and minimize time spent searching in favor of time spent reading. Tools can help with that (as with News.me), but the most important thing isn't the tool, but the mindset of the user."
