How does a large e-commerce site appeal to a wide variety of shoppers online — and then get them used to the idea of shopping with social? Zappos is working to figure out the answer to social commerce.
Pinterest has raised a new funding round of $200 million, putting the company’s valuation at $2.5 billion. The company has exploded in the last few years as users have flocked to collect images across the web and pin them to virtual boards.
Therese Torris's insight:
Brings the total money raised to a stunning $338 million.
What would YOU do with that amount of money ? Sell $1 bills for 50 cents to quickly get to 200 million users ? You got it, that's the winning business model by US standards. The idea is to preempt competition by overfunding 1 winning startup. I does work (Facebook), albeit not all the time (see Groupon) . Therese Torris's insight:
Yummy Yummy !
I had just started a Pinterest board of my favorite recipes from marmiton.org, France's best social recipe sharing site. The way Punchfork sends traffic to cooking blogs and other sources is that it publishes the picture and the ingredients but you have to go to the source to read the recipe

TNW: Well that was quicker than expected. Just a few hours ago, we wrote about a hack to let you block users on Pinterest, and now the social network has made the feature official. The company ...
Therese's comment: Pinterest has quite a strict policy regarding offensive content. Blocking other users from commeting and participating in one's board was one of the top user requests. Apparently, some users/women were harassed onPinterest. I haven't come across any sich abuse, but there surely was some spam going on. Anyway, it's always good to have a well moderated community.
Therese's summary: Reb Carlson show how different curation site drive different traffic: Reddit of rnews and Pinterest for eCommerce. Pinterest can't be dismissed as a fad because it drives much less referral traffic than a news curation platform like Reddit; it is 0.1% away from overtaking Yahoo§ as a source of traffic.
Don't worry, Pinterest isn't ditching the grid style "Masonry" design it's known and cloned for. But today Pinterest announced tests of a new navigation system, bigger images, and more related content on Pins to keep you clicking.
Frustrated with how long it is taking to meet great people on Pinterest I decided to gamify Pinterest. Can you tell a cool complete story in 5 pins or less? Then you may be the King, Queen or Best Business on Pinterest.
Digial Advertising Age: [...] Pinterest's goal is to get the thousands of businesses already on the platform to migrate their accounts over to the business type. Pinterest also has an incentive for them to make the switch. [...] The company also today announced two new widgets to enable account owners -- businesses and individuals alike -- to embed pins and boards on third-party sites [...] to help build up their following [...] .
While business accounts are now largely symbolic in terms of what they portend for brands, it's possible to imagine them as a precursor for a much more robust back-end where brands could pay to promote a pin...[...] or to rearrange pins and boards.
Mashable: ..When pinning an image to Mashable's Pinterest account Wednesday morning, we noticed a mention of "secret boards" (see screenshot above)... Users have long been asking Pinterest to allow them to make private boards. Since its launch, all images and videos pinned to Pinterest have been made public, making it impossible to for users to use the service for pinning gift ideas or other content they may not want to make available for public consumption.
Therese's comment: Interesting. ..opportunity for monetization?

[From Pando Daily:]
If Tumblr were designed today it might look like Pinterest. All Pinterest did was take the Tumblr feed — a mishmash of uploaded, reblogged and remixed words and images — and make it easier to skim. Rather than scroll endlessly through a single feed of content, Pinterest displays it in as many columns as your browser width can handle..."
