Curating curation topic on Scoop.it

Curating curation topic on Scoop.it | Content Curation Tools | Scoop.it

Content curation tools are designed to assist the process of searching, collating and sharing existing content. Content curation differs from simple content aggregation in that curators screen for the most relevant content, and often edit or comment it.   By curating content on a topic close to them, brands can position themselves as a go-to expert on that topic and embed their communication into the richer context of external content sources.

Content curation tools are multiplying like wild mushrooms. Category leaders, like Pinterest, tumblr and Scoop.it are growing impressively fast.

At the same time, other tools from social media, blogging and search, such as Twitter, Paper.li and Google are strengthening their curation functionality.

Observer (like me) are starting to make distinctions among subcategories like Search Curation (Topsy, Feedsquares), Video Curation (Magnify.net), Content Trends curation (Zemanta, Parse.ly), Corporate Curation (Curata, CurationSoft, Digimind), Content Relationships curation (Pearltrees, Mind.it).

The most popular category is Social Curation. Social Curation enables users to clip and publically share content (mostly pictures, graphics and video) in the form of attractive personalized mood boards (typical of Pinterest, Bundlr).

A more specialized form of Social content curation helps users turn twitter feeds into threaded stories (Storify, Dashter).

We can expect much of the Pinterest-style social curation to turn into Shopping Curation à la OpenSky.

We can also expect the debate about content curation and copyright infringment to continue to rage. Attribution to the original source should be a fundamental requirement of Content Curation. But it can be difficult when content is re-"pinned" again and again. Scoop.it is one of the best tools in terms of facilitating content attribution.

Content popularity vs content relevance

Content popularity vs content relevance | Content Curation Tools | Scoop.it

In a recent post for The Atlantic, Derek Thompson investigates what drives people to read content online. As a writer for a popular news site, it’s of interest to Thompson to find out what people are clicking on and why when navigating through the endless amount of web content available. Though it sounds like a boring study of analytics at first, his findings and references are actually super interesting.

Content Marketing Tools For Startups
I didn't write this post with #Startups in mind, but I could have. Startups wrestle with content marketing. I suggest these content marketing tools for any startup:

* Paper.li

* Scoop.it
* Google Analytics
* Google Adwords
* Google Plus
* Twitter
* A Blog (WordPress)

It is possible to change the world with those seven tools.

The linked post explains how I use Paper.li for everything from spidering the social web to reputation management. If you are a startup and don't know what either of those ideas are, trust me you will and I promise to post more about content marketing for startups soon.

If you look at the industry in which content curation tools and services have had the most leeway so far, that would be positively fashion, and, in my impression, by a good margin over the rapidly growing education/learning sector.

The fashion industry has embraced digital curation wholeheartedly more than any other sector so far, because of its strong visual element (the same one that has popularized the curation concept thanks to tools like Pinterest), and thanks to the natural inclination that fashion customers have for picking, collecting and sharing their unique preferences and combinations.

In this visual collection I have brought together the most interesting examples of curation at work in the world of fashion. Tools, services, communities, brands and products, all working together to filter, aggregate, pick and create relevant "selections" for the infinite number of tribes out there.

Fashion shopping curation with Monogram -- a difficult proposition

There are hundreds of attemps at shopping curation including the well-established Polyvore and Pïnterest. This is Monogram's second attempt at launching a shopping curation platform that will catch. It claims to index over 300 large retailers but it's not very transparent about who these retailers are.

For more info see also Techcrunch's article about Monogram's relaunch http://techcrunch.com/2013/05/20/monogram-two-point-oh/

Via Robin Good
Therese Torris's insight:

My point of view about attempts at establishing shopping curation platforms like Monogram is that there are too many of them without competitive advantage. I don't see a major consumer benefit in using Monogram. There are other more interesting platforms for consumers to express themselves and share with their friends. It's very difficult for a newcomer to create a positive spiral of traffic and community.

Therese Torris's comment, May 27, 2:53 PM
Hi Robin, thanks for pointing out the search engine. I remain convinced that it will be very difficult for Monogram to succeed. There is a huge competition for fashionista's time and retailers' products out there and some of the competitors like Fab.com, The Fancy, Polyvore and many others are pretty compelling. And There are also a lot of retailers that let customers put together lookboks and share them with their community (like the fabulous site net-à-porter)

Robin Good's comment, May 27, 5:06 PM
Yes Therese, I agree. I am actually glad that Monogram and other small startups are not refraining from attempting to innovate in this apparently crowded space, as I am convinced that there is still plenty of space for many new companies, unless each one of them wants to be the new Pinterest. If they specialize and work on niche audiences and specific use cases I think they may indeed provide a useful service for many. And in the end if they do not try what better suggestion do you have for them? :-)

Social Media Curation on Autopilot with BundlePost

Social Media Curation on Autopilot with BundlePost | Content Curation Tools | Scoop.it
Therese Torris's insight:

automated reposting of social feeds and alerts..

one should be wary of duplicate content

Robin Good's curator insight, June 18, 10:35 AM

BundlePost is a social curation web app which allows you to easily find relevant posts on the topics of your interest and to auto-schedule their republication on your preferred social media channel with your custom hashtags and Twitter names.

The service has been out there for over a year, but it has recently updated its website and service features.

BundlePost taps into your selected set of RSS feeds and Google Alerts (not for much longer) and aggregates relevant posts according to your theme and keyword specifications so that you can review, edit and modify those that you want to get published.

Scheduling and distribution features allow you to set exactly where and when you want each piece of content to be published.

BundlePost integrates perfectly with HootSuite, allowing you to upload days of ready-to-go scheduled content for any social network in minutes, and with its hashtag system is capable of creating folders for each of your campaigns, clients or accounts that coincide with a specific topic.

"Within each folder you designate the keywords and phrases that you know will be found in the text of the content curated by Bundle Post, as well as what hashtags you want the system to replace them with. You can also identify any words or phrases that will be contained in the text of posts and have Bundle Post automatically replace them with a specific twitter name, making it an active link when posted."

My comment: The perfect tool for social media and content marketers looking for the easiest way to post relevant content to their social media channels automatically and over time. If you are ready for a pretty "Spartan" interface but have a strong need to automate your social publishing needs, this solution may be worth checking out. Outside of my personal doubts on the effectiveness of this approach, the tool delivers tremendous time saving features for those looking exactly for this. You ca have automate FollowFridays. If instead you wonder from were all this extra information noise in your Twitter and social media accounts comes from, you now have another possible suspect.

Examples of Video curation with Videry

Examples of Video curation with Videry | Content Curation Tools | Scoop.it

Via Robin Good
Robin Good's curator insight, June 17, 1:14 PM

Videry is a great example of video curation at work.

Videry is a hand-curated collection of over 30 great video clips for web designers.

The beauty and value of this collection, in the context of curation is in the following:

  • The quality of the clips selected

  • A clean, and simple layout - content over looks
    The essence is in the selection made and that's why it needs to stand out.

  • The essential info is upfront - video thumbnails + title + description
    no other distractions.

  • A Pinterest-like simmetrical visual layout that allows easy scanning of the page

Where it could do better:

  • Titles: no personalization for context - titles in the collection are exactly as the originals - the curator here could have improved and contextuaized titles for this collection, while keeping a good reference, visible to everyone, of the original one.

  • Descriptions: these are the original video descriptions. No additions, no opinion, no contextualization. The curator could have written his own descriptions from these in the context of this collection, while leaving the original descriptions as an extra option (since they are all already accessible under the original video location).

  • No visibile authorship for the collection.

P.S.: I think this clean design used in this collection is so effective that I wish there was a service prividing the ability to create curated video collections with such information design elegance.

Why Content Curation and Crowdsourcing Will Change Everything

Why Content Curation and Crowdsourcing Will Change Everything | Content Curation Tools | Scoop.it

From the original article by Tom George on his "Internet Billboards".
Here are some interesting excerpts from the post about content curation.
"After having spent the better part of four years curating content from renowned bloggers, journalists and authors as well as building a platform here on Internet Billboards, which has evolved into a wonderful community of content curator’s.

Here is my definition of content curation. A content curator is someone who finds, organizes, presents and shares valuable information (content) in many forms, on a specific topic, in a way that provides special context and or a unique engagement with his or her readers. In actuality when done correctly, over time it positions the curator as an expert in his or her respective field and defines their reputation as a thought leader.

A good curator will mix curation with his or her own original content, to give interpretations for the express purpose of allowing others to form their own conclusions.
...
Why curation and crowdsourcing will and should become more important to you. I will give you ten reasons.
1. There is just too much content;
2. Social Sites Are Full Of Spam;
3. Privacy concerns with big data;
4. Limiting risk and using many minds;
5. Technology must assist us and help us not hinder us;
6. People Will recognize the need to build meaningful relationships;
7. Information will flow freely;
8. Trust and authority will be the new currency;
9. Curation helps you establish relationships with thought leaders;
10. Crowd Sourcing can make things possible..."

William Moeller Marketing & Design's comment, June 12, 6:46 PM
Hi Teresa. Curation creates its own set of challenges, and proper attribution to the content source(s) remains a big one, particularly in short form communication (e.g., Twitter). As a content curator, I strive to acknowledge my sources. But what if my nearest source was another curator, who perhaps shared it from another curator. With limited number of characters allowed, we have no choice but to truncate the value stream, occasionally (and unwittingly) leaving out the original author.
Therese Torris's comment, June 14, 1:19 PM
William, I agree it's not always easy. I still find that some systems are better than others at encouraging attribution. For exemple Scoop.it keeps the link to the original site from which the content was clipped. Thus there is a way to go to the source.
Stephen Dale's curator insight, June 15, 3:29 AM

I liked the definition of Curation from Tome George (author of the piece):

"A content curator is someone who finds, organizes, presents and shares valuable information (content) in many forms, on a specific topic, in a way that provides special context and or a unique engagement with his or her readers. In actuality when done correctly, over time it positions the curator as an expert in his or her respective field and defines their reputation as a thought leader. Pinterest 's strategy focuses on curation for discovery rather than competing with other social media

From AdAge : [...] Pinterest doesn’t see itself as a social media platform. It is not an alternative to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for consumers or marketers. It is positioning itself in the world of Google and search.

Pinterest is, at its core, a tool for indexing the visual web, much like Google’s roots as a tool for indexing information and meaning on the web....[...] It is looking to help people find fulfillment through newly discovered "things" they love, which can then lead to real-world action and purchasing. It's about demand generation instead of demand fulfillment.”

Andreas Kuswara's comment, June 11, 9:22 PM
I supposed twitter can be used or any tool can be used for anything,but some tools are made with certain intended affordance by the creator that would make the tool less effective for certain functions. curation in a way is capturing things void of time (i probably drawing too much from museum), while twitter is fast pace timeline of interactive (or one way) discourse.... they seems to be inherently different.

i'm just automatically sceptical when 'one tool can be use for all' theme appear. but it is an interesting suggestion.
