Curating curation topic on Scoop.it

Curating curation topic on Scoop.it | Content Curation Tools | Scoop.it

Content curation tools are designed to assist the process of searching, collating and sharing existing content. Content curation differs from simple content aggregation in that curators screen for the most relevant content, and often edit or comment it.   By curating content on a topic close to them, brands can position themselves as a go-to expert on that topic and embed their communication into the richer context of external content sources.

Content curation tools are multiplying like wild mushrooms. Category leaders, like Pinterest, tumblr and Scoop.it are growing impressively fast.

At the same time, other tools from social media, blogging and search, such as Twitter, Paper.li and Google are strengthening their curation functionality.

Observer (like me) are starting to make distinctions among subcategories like Search Curation (Topsy, Feedsquares), Video Curation (Magnify.net), Content Trends curation (Zemanta, Parse.ly), Corporate Curation (Curata, CurationSoft, Digimind), Content Relationships curation (Pearltrees, Mind.it).

The most popular category is Social Curation. Social Curation enables users to clip and publically share content (mostly pictures, graphics and video) in the form of attractive personalized mood boards (typical of Pinterest, Bundlr).

A more specialized form of Social content curation helps users turn twitter feeds into threaded stories (Storify, Dashter).

We can expect much of the Pinterest-style social curation to turn into Shopping Curation à la OpenSky.

We can also expect the debate about content curation and copyright infringment to continue to rage. Attribution to the original source should be a fundamental requirement of Content Curation. But it can be difficult when content is re-"pinned" again and again. Scoop.it is one of the best tools in terms of facilitating content attribution.

This is a great idea although I don't see where, from just reading the description of what it does, where it's any different than Reel Surfer or Keeeb or probably even a few others.

There's no doubt, however, that curating and aggregating video content can be a beneficial service to lots of niches.....etc. specific styles of cooking, auto repair, golf tutorials, dancing (e.g. videos on 'cross body lead').

I'll definately subscribe to the site and try it out.  I'll sell you what I wish I cold find:  I wish I could find a tool that made it really easy to insert notes that would display at specific points in vidoes.  A lot of times I see videos where most of it it not interesting but a certain portion of it is.

Alexander King's comment, May 9, 8:16 PM
@wanderingsalsero: Simple. Reel Surfer and Keeeb do not allow you to have a persistant, global playlist. Also Keeeb isn't just focused on playable media.. it's a lot of different things. The "liner notes" that you are referring to are a feature that is coming soon to CratePlayer!
GIANFRANCO MARINI's curator insight, May 10, 5:04 PM

Fighting spam on Scoop.it

Therese Torris's insight:

I don't know about you but I've recently noticed a lot of spam among the comments on Scoop.it. Every time I spotted one, I've tried to notify the Scoop.it ticket/helpdesk who has been very responsive.

Would it help if we all do the same ?

Should Scopp.it add a spam button ?

gdecugis's comment, May 2, 11:51 PM
Hi Therese - So you're totally right and we might have passed a threshold in traffic as we recently saw over the past few days a dramatic increase of spam in suggestions and comments. Here's an update I posted on this:
gdecugis's comment, May 2, 11:51 PM
I wanted to give you a follow-up update on the spam issues some of you reported these past few days.

Might be a sign of success but we did effectively get a lot more spammers than we used to. The problem we had was repeat spam from single accounts and different than what we had before. These accounts were created manually by humans (not bots) and exploited the comment or suggestion system to spam repeatedly at a very high rate a few number of successful topics (so including a lot of yours).

Today, we launched a radically new system to fight that. Most of this is backend and on our end and it still relies on our community deleting spam comments or suggestions and most importantly helping us identify spammers by checking the "mark as spam" option. What happens following that is totally new and though you won't see it as behind the scenes, we feel pretty good it's going to be much more efficient for the whole community.

Thanks again for having helped us understand the intensity of the problem and sorry you had to suffer from it. We're committed to keep Scoop.it free of spam and we're grateful to count on your support for that.

Google's patent application shows how its rankings (try to) favor larger incumbent original news publishers

Google's patent application shows how its rankings (try to) favor larger incumbent original news publishers | Content Curation Tools | Scoop.it

[...]

The first three metrics refer to “the number of articles produced … during a given time period, an average length of an article [and] the importance of coverage from the news source.” These favor large publishers, but they select for originality and focus as well.

Google is actually “counting the number of original sentences”

[...] The “breaking news score” is a metric of how quickly a publisher jumps on a story.

[...] The next three factors, usage patterns, human opinion and circulation statistics, are different ways of assessing popularity.

[...] In a further nod to “legacy media,” metrics eight and nine measure the number of individual bylines associated with a news source as well as the number of news bureaus. Unclear how much this will affect head counts at large publishers.

What do you think?

[...]

Therese Torris's insight:

These conclusions are more straightforward thant the original Monday Note on the topic which concluded : "A closer look at Google’s patent for its news retrieval algorithm reveals a greater than expected emphasis on quality over quantity."

Social news curation for quality news Newsana

Social news curation for quality news Newsana | Content Curation Tools | Scoop.it

A Toronto-based media website Newsana is opening public beta testing today; it is a social platform for news junkies that curates the highest quality content possible, as voted on by its users.

From "FAQ" page:

"Newsana is an community of passionate people who are dedicated to finding and discussing quality news and ideas from around the world. Our members share and vote on their favourite stories which determines the Top 5 Essential Stories of the day from a variety of topics.

It’s not new to have a community based on finding and sharing news, but only Newsana creates a community for quality minds to share quality content.

This is done by:

- Filtering out the noise. We provide members with an easy guide to the Top 5 Essential Stories per topic, not a shotgun blast of information that’s impossible to keep up with.

- Elevating the conversation.

- Higher standards. We don’t have an open door policy; our members must apply and show they are passionate about making the Internet a better place.

By focusing our activity on finding Top 5 Essential Stories in any given topic, we’re bringing much-needed context, and smart conversation, to the often chaotic online news landscape.

In order to maintain that quality and make sure our community standards are upheld, we require that everyone who pitches a story is a Newsana member..."

- Content Discovery:
Find news, features, videos, and more to repost on your site. And it's free.

Repost allows you to republish complete articles (including images, links, & multimedia) anywhere quickly, easily, and legally – just like video.
With Repost, you can distribute your content to other publishers, bloggers, and websites. You can also discover a broad range of content to repost on your own site. Whether you’re distributing, discovering, or both, why do you need Repost? That’s easy: More readers, more reach, more revenue.

Repost: it’s syndication reimagined; it’s the wire service reinvented; it’s changing the way content goes viral."

Excerpted from review article on Mashable:
"Repost.Us, a free service that launched earlier this week, provides publishers with a platform to share and embed full articles in the same way that YouTube lets users embed video clips. Websites can add a Repost button to their articles, which others can click on to re-publish all of the content in the article — along with videos, the original publisher's advertising and branding, and any updates to the article that occur afterwards. Repost also provides a directory of content that publishers can search through and publish on their own website.

In short, the goal for Repost, is to make it easy for big and small publishers to profit from sharing complete articles as it is for content producers to share and profit from videos using the embed code from websites like YouTube..."
