Websites vs. Blogs Which One is Better and Why

Websites vs. Blogs Which One is Better and Why | Curation, Social Business and Beyond | Scoop.it
janlgordon's insight:

Marty Smith has written another great article for Curatti about the blogs and websites. Understanding the difference is key as they both play an important role in successful content and social marketing.

Here are some highlights:

Websites and Blogs are different:

Engagement and SEO creates the difference between websites and blogs.

Blogs are “flatter” than most websites. Blogs organize content in reverse chronological order (most recent published posts appear first).

Reverse order is a LOUSY way to organize content for great user experience (engagement), to promote inbound links and to secure long-term search engine (SEO) power.

Tuning Blogs To Feel Like Websites

Websites need defined tiered navigation, splash pages, helpful categorization and internal search or they loose engagement
.

The more content you create the harder it gets for visitors to find. When visitors can’t find what they want they leave.

How to Humanize Your Brand | Curation, Social Business and Beyond | Scoop.it
This article presents 4 ways to improve brand likeability. These include such simple suggestions as "be Human" and "talk to your customers"
janlgordon's insight:

Effectively Reach Your Target Market

Trusted recommendations can help attract customers to your brand. I agree that you can accomplish this by creating incentives for influencers to share what you have to offer.

Brenner goes over how to improve the 'likability' factor for your business marketing.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Many people don't trust anyone trying to sell to them. You need to humanize your content in order to reach them in an trustworthy way.

  • Talk to your customers in real-time, one-on-one. Answer their questions with helpful advice when they visit your website.

  • We are not influenced by celebrities --- we take notes from each other. Encourage your community to make referrals and leave positive reviews.

Avoid These 6 Costly Social Media Mistakes

Avoid These 6 Costly Social Media Mistakes | Curation, Social Business and Beyond | Scoop.it
By now, you should know just how important a good social media strategy is for your business. But do you know what pitfalls and mistakes you need to avoid?
janlgordon's insight:

I selected this article from Curatti written by Ian Naylor because it explains how to develop a strong social media strategy that works for your business.

It's important to build solid objectives in order to be successful in social media marketing.

Common Social Media Mistakes

While you can create a social media account and begin tweeting or posting this will not guarantee solid growth. I agree that it takes focus and dedication to get real results.

Naylor explains what to avoid and how to properly grow your social brand.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Avoid spreading yourself too thin on too many networks. Focus on one and then move up from there. It takes time and dedication to develop your community.

  • Include the human touch in your accounts rather than just relying on automation or standard content. When people see the same messages they become bored quickly and move on.

  • It's important to include video as a part of your marketing strategy. People are especially drawn to this medium -- especially live stream broadcasts.

Your Website May Be Lagging Behind

To convert your subscribers your website needs to run efficiently for your visitors. I agree that a poor execution will drive down precious sales.

Harman provides an explanation on how this can directly affect your bottom line.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • A website that crashes due to a lack of scalability will lose customers. This is enough to send them shopping at the competition instead.

  • You can go out of business if too many potential buyers are leaving. This will impact your marketing campaign as well if you're not keeping up with the demand.

  • A poorly run website could lose loyal customers. Repeat buyers are the bread and better to many online businesses.

Why long form content is well received by your audience.

Long Form Content Success Strategies

Most readers prefer digestible, longer content. I agree that you need to write it in a way that adds value to your community.

Kramer explains the impact of long form content on your blog.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Longer content can set you apart from the competition. Especially as you focus more on quality than quantity. This places your business ahead of the game.

janlgordon's insight:

In our latest Curatti interview, Alice Elliott talks about all aspects of blogging, including blog commenting.

"In the interview I mention my commenting book and my latest 90 Days Challenge to Commenting Mastery. Now I don’t usually plug my own stuff, but once you’ve read the rest of this post and realise you need to perfect your commenting skills, this is a great place to start."

She writes: "commenting can be a great way to hone in on your writing skills. Just like Twitter, you have a limited space to have your say. But even though it’s a bit more than 140 characters, there’s still a knack to writing a comment that is meaningful, proactive, readable and suitably enthusiastic enough to be accepted and welcomed."

Here's what caught my attention:

  • The public has generally lost confidence in all institutions of society over the last year. This is the case with 20 out of 28 countries.

  • Some of the main culprits of mistrust are tax avoidance, overcharging for basic needs, and erosion of quality. There has only been a 7 point increase in the United States in 2016.

When I started out blogging back in 2013, I never thought I would call myself a business owner. This is my journey from blogger to business owner
janlgordon's insight:

I selected this article from Curatti written by Ashley Faulkes because it explains the process of running a blog and then turning it into a business.

The story of how one blogger became a businessman.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Start by learning as much as you can from leading blogging experts. Then brush up on your digital marketing skills in areas like social media, SEO, and email marketing.

The Importance Quality Metrics for More Sales

The Importance Quality Metrics for More Sales | Curation, Social Business and Beyond | Scoop.it
When comparing quantity metrics with quality metrics, Certainly, one is easier. But it's the other that will bring you conversions
janlgordon's insight:

I selected this article from Curatti written by Robert Caruso because it explains the importance of quality metrics when measuring the results of your business's marketing efforts.

Understanding the outcome of your marketing strategies can help improve your conversion rates.

Measuring for Business Success

You can be successful generating more sales with the right metrics in place. I agree that many businesses fail to understand the full scope of their activities online.

Caruso explains what quality metrics look like and how this can affect your bottom line.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • When it comes to taking a look at digital marketing your metrics should look at the quality rather than the quantity. This will then determine your investment of time, money, and resources.

  • You can have a false sense of success by focusing on vanity metrics, which relies on data from activities rather than certain activities. This provides very little actionable data to measure.

  • If you want to increase your sales then you need to dive deeper into actionable activity such as conversion rates, time spent on your website, cost per lead, ect.

Edan Joy Gelt's curator insight, March 22, 11:53 PM

What an intuitive piece about quality versus quantity.  I've actually had clients that have bought "likes" and "followers" thinking that the more followers, the better they appear as a business (power of social psychology). This fake dilution actually depletes their efforts in the social channel for a small, temporary illusion of grandeur.  The importance of a quality audience being offered quality content is what translates to the bottom line.  Likes, clicks and follows are not reflective of NOI.

janlgordon's insight:

I selected this article from Curatti written by Jenn Herman because it provides insights into how to better grow your Instagram community with the right hashtags.

It's important to use the right keywords for your niche to grow your reach on Instagram.

Improve Your Following on Instagram With Hashtags

Mobile audiences use specific topics to find a post or user. I agree that you can improve your marketing strategy by using these hashtags to draw the audience to you.

Herman explains how your posts can attract the right followers for your brand.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • You need to know specifically what sets your posts apart rather than using generic terms. This will improve your chances of getting found in the 'top spots' on Instagram.

  • The best method is to use 15-20 hashtags per post and then focus on the 4-5 popular ones. These need to be related to your posts, and have a high number of usage.

  • The higher the engagement the more views your posts will get. Sometimes these can show up the the hashtag hubs for days or even weeks.

Instagram tips on hashtags
Vanessa Ong Li Wen's curator insight, March 19, 10:39 AM

As a non-user of Instagram, I understand the attraction of the application and the use of hashtags to gather as many like as possible. However, I fail to understand the prevalence of such a technology in our world today. An article on how to use hashtags as effectively as possible? When did it become a necessity for us to write about getting as many likes and affirmation as possible? If I were to use Instagram, I would treat hashtags as a way to simply and deconstruct the message that my photo was trying to convey. For example, if I were to post a photo of an art piece, instead of writing a detailed explanation of the piece which most would not want to read about, I would use hashtags to highlight whatever it is I wish to express to my followers. While I understand that Instagram may be attractive because it lets us in on our friends’ lives and serves as a platform for us to receive affirmation from our peers, I do not think we should rely on Instagram so heavily to the extent that we write articles on how to make our posts more popular and well received. We should make use of this application to share our photos and activities with our friends, as well as show appreciation to others through this platform.

janlgordon's insight:

I selected this article from Curatti written by Alice Elliott because she explains how to capture your readers with a stand-out blog post introduction.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • After reading the headline the introduction should clarify it. This is especially important if you do not have a sub-heading.

  • Your text should prepare the reader for the rest of the post. They need to know how it will be a benefit to them.

How Bite-Sized Content Can Capture Attention | Curation, Social Business and Beyond | Scoop.it
In this article, the concept of atomization is used to describe producing bite-sized content from larger articles or reports, and why it works
janlgordon's insight:

I selected this article from Curatti written by Bryan Kramer because it provides insight into how to capture your readers with smaller content.

Why bite-sized content is effective in getting your message out.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • The smallest gift can produce the biggest dividend when it comes to writing content. This especially applies to shares on social media.

Why Google Does Not Like 'Dofollow' Links in Sponsored Posts

Why Google Does Not Like 'Dofollow' Links in Sponsored Posts | Curation, Social Business and Beyond | Scoop.it
Some solicitations for sponsored content come with the demand that you include follow links. Resist the temptation to take the money. Here's why
janlgordon's insight:

I selected this article from Curatti written by Andy Capaloff because it explains why you should avoid "dofollow" links when publishing sponsored posts.

Why follow links are a turn-off when it comes to Google search.

Avoid Using Follow Links in Sponsored Posts

In order to maintain growth on your blog it's important to follow the rules when it comes to search. I agree that your sponsored posts should not include "dofollow" links in order to avoid penalties and losing valuable traffic.

Capaloff explains the rules that Google has set forth and how they calculate your PageRank.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Using a follow link can negatively impact your website's ranking in search results. Google refers to these as "link schemes," and you don't want your blog associated with these.

  • In some instances a website can be completely removed from Google's index if they include follow links. The company who has paid you can also be penalized along with you.

  • A penalty might appear anywhere from a few months to a year later. It rarely happens right away, but will catch up with you eventually.
