  • The introduction is the most important part of your press release. It should explain who, what when, where, and why along with a summary of what the article is about.

Interesting analysis by Mathew Ingram on what Google just did by tweaking search results to include Google + results in there. And in particular what this means for the Media industry.

 

If you're not familiar with the change, the article describes it well and there's another piece you can check that will probably freak out some.

 

To elaborate on Mathew's point, I would put it more concretely: the time where Media could simply use Twitter or G+ accounts like RSS feeds is over.


**User engagement is required and it means getting readers to like, comment, +1 and... curate your content.

 

**Clay Shirky once defined curation's role this way: "Curation comes up when search stops working".

 

Well, now if you want your content to be searched, you better start by curating it.

** To start applying content curation, communicators need to pay attention to how others are using the crop of curation tools that have found acceptance online.

The process would look something like this:

Any company news is a potential curated collection.

Select curators:

Companies are increasingly focused on content marketing. Curating company news fits nicely into the content marketing bucket, where it can both fill a gap in mainstream media reporting and serve as an impetus to getting that coverage.


**It’s only a matter of time before some organizations move beyond entry-level curation efforts and start curating their news.

This has me thinking critically about how we are integrating social media. Inviting interaction has been a huge challenge. We are stimulating new conversations in real world time, but that's not reflected in comments and so forth. This a great blog post from Rian van der Merwe , describing the noise you can find on the web now, and especially content just created for SEO purposes or advertisers. As many, Rian is tired of it.


Rian speaks for many of us who are overwhelmed, overloaded with content that gives us no value at all. This is the problem


Of course, we’re never going to agree on what “quality content” means. It’s one of those “you know it when you see it” things, and everyone’s definition will be different. Still, my personal view is that quality content presents two or more of the following components: (1) new information, (2) interpretation of information, and/or (3) a well considered personal opinion about what the information means. ↩Wait, who am I to decide what people should and shouldn’t read? You’re absolutely right, I can’t do that so I should get off my high horse and let people read whatever they want to read. This is an opinion piece. ↩

My commentary:


Bill clarifies what Twitter is and what it is not. I found it extremely well written and very helpful. I also found some of the comments from readers to be interesting. More than one person thought this was a shameless promotion of Twitter, being that he is an investor.   Maybe it was but I have personally gotten tremendous value from Twitter for over five years and after reading this, it crystalized a few  more things in my mind and I will leverage that knowledge in the future


And I feel compelled to ask: are the opinions of an investor automatically flawed?  If I loved a product enough and had the means to make a substantial investment in it, I would consider that being me "putting my money where my mouth is" and would hope that those who perhaps used to listen to me extolling the virtues of the product before I invested, would see my opinion as no less valid after I became a part-owner.


**I say don't throw the baby out with the bath-water:-).

Step 1: Survey the Competitive Landscape
In content marketing and content curation, your competitors are not the companies who sell similar products or services. Rather, your competitors are organizations who publish content on the same topic as you.

1. Determine if you can curate content better than they can by being more comprehensive, more relevant, or more consistent... 


2. See if there is a different perspective or opposing point of view that you bring to the table... 

3. Try to broaden or narrow your topic. If your initial topic was offshore wind farms, you can try narrowing your topic to Atlantic Ocean Wind Farms or broaden it to Wind Power.


Step 2: Survey the Content Landscape
Content curation, the process of finding, organizing and sharing relevant information on a specific topic, relies on third party content. In order to become a successful curator on your topic, you need to determine if there is enough content to curate.

 

Step 3: Survey your audience interest
Even if you have a great topic that passes the competitor survey and the content survey, you must ensure that it is a topic that will draw an audience, and not just any audience, but the target audience for your business.


Putting it all together: Finding the Sweet Spot
At this point your challenge is to find a topic that passes these three tests.

I know you lived in the US for awhile, but a slang saying in America "like a kid in a candy store" - meaning that kids LOVE candy and when they see it they get excited and you can't get them away. It's interesting how Robin and I were both drawn to different aspects of this article.


What follows are examples of what the author refers to as "re-treatment" of content and of conversation.  This is both a "re-treatment of curation" and the engagement of a conversation between Curators.


I would further point to our different approaches as defining the importance of collaboration and to how re-treatments of the same material may result in the original material having broader context and being seen by more people, as our approaches stand to be seen by slightly divergent audiences.


**This is not unlike the different audiences that may be reached by journalists and news organizations curating the same material to their respective readership.

When Jonathan Marks advises broadcasters on how to integrate emerging technologies in the work flow, he is driven by one major principle:


**making sure that the conversation with the public is happening.


In an era when the voice of the online citizen is more present than ever before, the idea may seem obvious but according to Marks, there is still much work to do.


In Marks’ view, broadcasters need to work cross-media,


**by adapting their content to mobile phones, websites and tablet devices.


**The idea of curating the news by cherry-picking good stories through web research and by using the audience’s input seems promising.


**The technology to curate stories, however, is still inadequate.



**Although various online tools to organise and share content have been developed, such as the Pearltrees application allowing users to collect, share and re-treat online content,


**“the problem is that once the link is re-treat, you have lost the original content”, Marks argues.


**“What we need are tools to build libraries and create intelligent tags. So many excellent stories are never kept.”


Several small companies already offer news briefing services and successfully manage active online communities.


They understand the trick of building niche channels and developing relations of trust with the audience.


This is where the future for broadcast media lies,” Marks predicts.

Robin Good curated this piece and has some very interesting observations in addition the article.



Mathew Ingram makes a great point in this post I discovered thanks to Morten Myrstad: one way for Media groups to re-invent themselves is to think of themselves as data platforms and not newspapers any more.

 

 

Great point.

 

But I see one more: opening up to other news platforms too even if competing.

 

I appreciate this clearly faces cultural resistance but if you think of it really as a platform, you shouldn't be afraid to interface it with your competitors' just like Twitter has a LinkedIn App.

 

One missed opportunity I see that reflects this is the WSJ Facebook App: it's a great concept to let your readers remix the headlines but why not do it with non-WSJ content too? I'd love to see through a crowd sourced effort from the most WSJ active readers and curators how some WSJ-news relate to other news from say the FT or the Economist.

 

I’m going to make my music-industry analogy again (can’t escape my background…) but right now media groups think of building a record store or a radio station with their own artists. Imagine a radio that would play only Universal Music Group artists? It would suck, right? Yet, that’s what most media are today.

 

Don't you think the industry needs bold moves like this?

**In the end, almost every person is a little of both (creator & curator).

I wanted to let you know that your last link, the bit.ly one isn't good. It has an extra square bracket at the end making it unusable.

Also: I think it would be very appropriate when curating something that is over a year old to say so explicitly as it is an extra element of immediate evaluation for the reader.

This is a great way to add "context" it can start conversations, which invites others to add their comments, bring new observations and more information about a particular topic.


**A perfect segue to building relationships, community, doing business and increasing knowledge.

This has me thinking critically about how we are integrating social media. Inviting interaction has been a huge challenge. We are stimulating new conversations in real world time, but that's not reflected in comments and so forth. I like using Scoop.It widgets to get the newest scoop onto the bog in a timely manner and take some time to reflect on post content.

This topic is extremely relevant to in how we market our product to our consumers today. Media and marketing have only been a great impact on the company's income. This article gives some of the facts that how media have been changed and used in recent years. "The millennial generation has been engrossed by the inundation of media and are products of an environment where media companies create and reinforce the content it deems best for the consumers of media."

This article was really interesting. As consumers continue to increase in their use of secondary screens and dual screen viewing, it will become more and more important for marketers to develop communication strategies that take advantage of these new touch points, while also having a message that is personally relevant to the individual. As it says in the article, for many companies this will mean the use of big data to indentify insights that can be used to enhance their brand equity with their individual customers.

I like how businesses are tailoring their messages to individuals now rather than trying to approach an entire target audience as one group of like-minded people. It's interesting to note how young social media is in terms of when it was established, and how drastically it's changed marketing methods since it's inception. As things continue to change and improve, it will be important to familiarize ourselves with newer technologies and incorporate them into our marketing channels.

BrandPilgrim never really uses the term "content curators" in her manifesto, but if you replace the term "social media maven" with "content curator" you will see by yourself how fitting it can be, in describing the emerging curation trend unrolling now."
