*Terms you use as a brand to describe your product


*Words you would like the consumer to asociate with your product


 Listen to your fans & adapting your communication strategies will be key in the evolution of your brand voice over time.


Takeaway:


A successful brand voice will be one that stays true to your core values & messaging while encoraging dialogue from your fan base


After engaging with your community, your brand voice should adapt based on feedback from them but always be a reflection of your brand identity.

I selected this article because it reaffirms what many of us already know but it's still good to see this in writing: Content curation and Media Curation (a mix of  machine aggregation and Human Curation) are starting to pick up steam.


Here are some highlights:


Curation comes up when search stops working,” says author and NYU Professor Clay Shirky. But it’s more than a human-powered filter.


**“Curation comes up when people realize that it isn’t just about information seeking, it’s also about synchronizing a community.”


The author says and I agree with him:


**"The value will be in the expertise of the curator, people will not read junk, and the best of the best curators will create digital domination with vibrant communities".


There is also a great quote from Fred Wilson's AVB blog in which he details what he would do if he were starting the Village Voice now:


**I would not print anything. I would not hire a ton of writers. I would build a website and a mobile app (or two or three). I would hire a Publisher and a few salespeople.


**I would hire an editor and a few journalists. And then I’d go out and find every blog, twitter, facebook, flickr, youtube, and other social media feed out there that is related to downtown NYC


**and I would pull it all into an aggregation system where my editor and journalists could cull through the posts coming in, curate them, and then publish them

That is pretty significant for a social network that most marketers still do not even know exists. And yes, they are still an invite only community.


This data does not include EVERY referral source out there on the web. But it does put Pinterest into context compared to other major social sites. And it can give anyone doing business online a good sense of where strong referral opportunities might exist for their business.

Yesterday I selected a post by Elad Gil who talked about Pinterest changing the way we share and consume information on the web.  Today I have selected another article by Don Reisinger  for Cnet News - digital home, who says, "let's not jump to conclusions here and has more to say about this.


I do admit I'm participating on many betas because I feel the need to stay informed. I'm not usually drawn to every new thing that comes along but somehow, Pinterest has caught my eye.


Let's take a look at why Pinterest is becoming one of the most popular social networks, what's really happening here?


Here's what caught my attention:


**Pinterest so far has been the only company to distinguish itself. Late last month, Experian Hitwise, a company that monitors consumer behavior on the Web, reported that Pinterest had 11 million visits during the week ended December 17, jumping 4,000 percent compared with six months earlier.


**The massive bump catapulted Pinterest to the 10th spot in Experian's listing of the most popular social networks, just behind Yelp. Experian also discovered that Pinterest has found a loyal following in women.


**In the past three months, women have accounted for 58 percent of its userbase, and nearly 60 percent of those women are between the ages of 25 and 44.


**Opinions are mixed over why Pinterest has been able to attract such a large audience.


**Is it the service's solid design? Is it the attention it has received from media outlets shocked by its growth?


**Is it, perhaps, the fact that it recently raised $26 million from venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, giving it bundles of cash to play with? It could be all that.


**But Gil thinks it might also have something to do with its ease-of-use.


**"Pinterest was one of the first sites to take push button content generation (via bookmarklets and 're-pinning') and structure it into sets of curated content called 'boards


**This allowed users to collect content from across the Web, as well as from other users on the site.


Reisinger ends his article with a word of caution:


**"Pinterest has yet to offer its service publicly. And once it finally moves beyond its invite-only phase, the company will be truly tested."


Followed by the question: 


**"will the mainstream Web user who typically joins the social game after early adopters pick up their invites, find value in it?"


** Chances are, we'll get the answers to those questions later this year.

This has me thinking critically about how we are integrating social media. Inviting interaction has been a huge challenge. We are stimulating new conversations in real world time, but that's not reflected in comments and so forth. I like using Scoop.It widgets to get the newest scoop onto the bog in a timely manner and take some time to reflect on post content.

There is no curation without original content. However, curators can expand the readership and help their niche find meaning and insight in the material as it relates to them. 


He says:


"So many organizations are getting caught up in content curation, but the real power of content marketing lies in original content creation."


Curation is more than a tactic, it is coming to forefront because


**people are overwhelmed with too much information.


If you're going to create content, I say mixing that with curated content might be a better way to go, again this depends on many factors,  but that's only my opinion.


Here are a few things that caught my attention:


Y0ur 2012 Checklist -


He says, yes, you can and should use content curation techniques, but this should be secondary.


I say, Curation is more than a technique and will go beyond a buzz word in 2012 as people learn new techniques.


He says:


"Focus on the true pain points of your customers and start planning content series around answering those pain points".


**I definitely agree but this can be accomplished by curation as well. It's not an either or, a curator can add more vital information, another perspective. provide resources or any number of things beyond the original article.


He says:


"Find the content curators in your industry and form relationships with them. They’ll help you spread the word about your great content".


I say:


I believe content creators will want to seek out good content curators  to curate their work.  I watched a six minute video yesterday, the title was "Is Your Content Good Enough To Be Curated"? Now that's a shift in thinking and a very interesting question to ponder, I say, stay tuned........


I think both are necessary in different proportions for different types of businesses.

I wanted to share an article before Thanksgiving that really spoke to me and the hearts of many. I have been looking for days and felt when the right one came along, I would know it. Charu encapsulates the shift as "Inbound marketing focuses on earning, not buying, a person’s attention"


In pointing to the ascendancy on Inbound Marketing, it's worth first noting the ongoing demise in traditional marketing with a couple of statistics from the Infographic:


***84% of 25-34 year olds have left a favorite website because of intrusive or irrelevant advertising.


***44% of Direct Mail is never opened


***86% of people skip television ads


***200m Americans have registered their phone numbers on the FTC 'Do not call' list


On the added allure of Inbound Marketing:


***Leads cost 62% less than tradional marketing methods


***People are in control of the information they receive


For me, the Takeaway is that the shift in power from marketers to consumers has gone from being a trend to a juggernaut.  There is no turning back. 


People will always need to buy things, and companies that can engage their potential consumers and who produce quality products or services that will pass the all important peer test, will thrive.  Shouldn't it have always been this way? :)

My commentary:


Bill clarifies what Twitter is and what it is not. I found it extremely well written and very helpful. I also found some of the comments from readers to be interesting. More than one person thought this was a shameless promotion of Twitter, being that he is an investor.   Maybe it was but I have personally gotten tremendous value from Twitter for over five years and after reading this, it crystalized a few  more things in my mind and I will leverage that knowledge in the future


And I feel compelled to ask: are the opinions of an investor automatically flawed?  If I loved a product enough and had the means to make a substantial investment in it, I would consider that being me "putting my money where my mouth is" and would hope that those who perhaps used to listen to me extolling the virtues of the product before I invested, would see my opinion as no less valid after I became a part-owner.


**I say don't throw the baby out with the bath-water:-).

Here are just a few gems that caught my attention:


****For the vast majority of Twitter’s next 900 million users, the core usage modality will have very little to do with “tweeting,” and everything to do withlistening” or “hearing.”

I selected this article by Matthew Knell for Socialfresh because it relates to the other pieces I've  posted regarding information overload and being able to filter out what's important through all the distraction. 


Let's face it, we have too many choices, whether it's content, social networks, and the like. It's like going to a particular restaurant that has a certain cuisine, you have a menu, you select what appeals to you.  With niche sites it puts you in charge not the other way around, you're curating your experience.


Here are some things that caught my attention:


**one constant through the many evolutions of Internet platforms is the fickleness of human beings.


**Especially when asked to make quick decisions.



**Successful products have been driven by the combination of:


**The “right” feature set


**Clarity in purpose


**most importantly, the vibrant nature of communities and how accessible they are to the user.


**They’re running into too many choices of types and places to share their content.


**Increasingly, they’re also running into one parameter that’s impossible to change – the number of hours in the day.


**It's no wonder Pinterest leads the way in niche sites......You can pick and choose what you want to look at, it's better than bookmarking and it's visual for starters.


The author talks about Facebook and Shopping Malls, trying to be too many things to too many people.


How this relates to curation and information overload:


In a quantity vs quality comparison, on a per piece of content basis, quantity almost never wins no matter  what you're comparing it to.

Thanks so much. In my opinion niche networks are working better because they are still free from the effects caused by the desire to increase friends (or followers and so on). The other way: people are demanding more interesting content from non friends.

I selected this piece from ID and other Reflections on blogspot because the future is on our doorstep and this article has some very good information.


Intro:


Faced with the tsunami of information, we are all floundering to find our way to content that actually matters. From setting up filters--both of the automated and human variety--to trying to make sense of what we find, we are in a fix, so to speak.


****Hence, we see the rise of content curators as a breed who will help us to make sense of this world of worldwideweb that has suddenly gone amuck.


Enterprises who want to survive in 2012 and beyond must be on the cutting edge of their field, they need to be adaptive and make the right decisions quickly. They will need to:


**Be able to connect the dots to make sense of the underlying pattern.


What role can an enterprise community manager play?


**Surface useful and interesting content


**This entails listening to the community, being aware of the needs and drivers, and keeping a keen watch on the different contributions and conversations taking place on the platform.


**One needs to develop a nose for useful content just like an experienced editor develops a sense for what could be breaking news.


**This skill cannot be automated and requires constant engagement with the community to develop.


**By surfacing hidden gems, community managers enable users to make those serendipitous discoveries that could lead to breakthrough innovations, more engaged

participation and a sense of commitment to the community.


**The greater the benefit users derive from their membership to the community, the higher will be their involvement and engagement.


The community manager's role would be akin to that of a museum curator. Curators at museums lay out the best pieces in a manner that:


**Catch the viewers attention


**Tells a narrative that makes sense to the viewer  


**Gives a sense of the bigger scheme of things


**Makes it easy for viewers to "jump" to the sections that interest them


**Have enough metadata for viewers to understand the context


Here are a few takeaways that definitely caught my attention:


A good curator will seek, sense, synthesise and then share in a manner that adds value to a specific user group.


**Curation is not just a collection of links and resources--it is a synthesis that reveals the pattern behind the links and list of resources


**By revealing the patterns, a curator can help an organisation make breakthrough finds.


****The key here is to remember that each content piece is a social object around which conversations will evolve, further content will be generated and ideas surface.

If you are looking for inspiration when it comes to content curation, here is a great example at work.

 

Elearning Examples is a curated collection of "examples" from the real world of online communications in the areas of "multimedia journalism", "infographics" and "html5" among others.

For each one of these categories the author has written and edited a specific information card containing relevant information, images and links to the work being referenced.

 

The design of the site and the quality of the work "examples" being showcased make this a good example of what good "content curation" is. 

 

Clearly, the work produced by this site, produces no noise or regurgitation of information, but rather offers a better way to make sense and discover the communication areas being curated on the site.

This is a great way to add "context" it can start conversations, which invites others to add their comments, bring new observations and more information about a particular topic.


**A perfect segue to building relationships, community, doing business and increasing knowledge.

This has me thinking critically about how we are integrating social media. Inviting interaction has been a huge challenge. We are stimulating new conversations in real world time, but that's not reflected in comments and so forth. I like using Scoop.It widgets to get the newest scoop onto the bog in a timely manner and take some time to reflect on post content.

Brittany Morin wrote this piece for the Huffington Post


I thought this was good article, great observations and a real grasp on curation and how to do it effectively. I'm going to refrain from reposting all the gems in this post  and instead give a commentary on something she said which I thought was a bit shortsighted.  


Here's what caught my attention:


"I believe that the people best poised to be curators of the Internet are those from the Facebook Generation -- the first generation of native web citizens, mainly people in their 20s or early 30s who have grown up with the web and can navigate, scour, synthesize and then publish the best of what's out there on a daily basis because they practically live online. It is our generation that will also be able to more easily understand where new opportunities lie because they can quickly pinpoint where the gaps are in content, services, and products."


My response:


She is right that people in their 20's or 30's are indeed well equipped to curate the web especially for their own age group as well as others for all the reasons she states.


Having said that, there are people of all ages who have been on the web for years, myself included, who have built relationships and have the ability to spot trends, gaps and potential opportunities. I seriously doubt that people in that age group know what people in their 40's, 50's & 60's might need in a trusted source or have access or the ability to ferret out every potential opportunity on the web. I would be careful about making global statements like that.


**What if people of all ages contributed to a topic together, can you imagine the collective intelligence that could come from that?


What will set a good curator apart from a person who just aggregates links is the context they can add.  Their perspective will have been gained through the humility and wisdom of life experience and can add great richness to the original content.  To be sure, I have met many wonderful GenYers who have these traits in abundance, but this is one area where a few extra years and a few extra miles can help.


Content is the new currency of the web, it is meant to be a door opener, to invite others into the conversation, building thought leadership and authority. The more people that contribute by giving comments or adding another level of context, not only does it add to our knowledge but it can build community.


I think there is an enormous opportunity for anyone who has the passion, knowledge expertise and committment to select the very best content, fact check for accuracy and is willing to put in the time to learn how to curate succesfully.

Quality curation is not based on age gruoups but on engagement, openness, knowledge, context and a lot of other stuff - but claiming that a curators age is something of particular interest is rubbish to me.
