Deanna Dahlsad's curator insight, October 15, 2013 5:00 PM

I'm still not convinced that curation is all that new or different than blogging or other online publishing activities. (Blogging is not dead.) Nor am I convinced it is the most important thing you can do in terms of marketing. (And just because "everyone is doing it" doesn't sway me either; like momma always said about if so & so jumped off a bridge...) But I don't think curation can be overlooked much longer. Curation needs to be evaluated for several major factors:

a) can it fit within your scope (Do you have the time & skill set? Can you do this in house or should you hire?)

b) purpose (to maintain existing clients/customers, to reach new ones?)

b) where would it fit? (Not all curation sites are the same; some are more suitable for products, brands, B2B or B2C reach, demographics, etc.)

Alessandro Rea's curator insight, October 17, 2013 5:28 AM

While B2B marketers are beginning to adopt B2C best practices when it comes to e-commerce, B2B marketers have traditionally invested more of their budgets into content marketing than their B2C counterparts, making it interesting to see how both sides measure up in this rapidly-growing area. There are many more similarities than one might expect.

The Six Pillars of SEO-Friendly Curated Content

The Six Pillars of SEO-Friendly Curated Content | Content Curation Info | Scoop.it
Content curation could be an extremely risky practice if you don't put a lot of effort in, or it lacks editorial voice or a distinctive point of view. After all, Google already has a curated list of content.

I really think that Eric Enge of SearchEngineWatch did not have to go out of his way to post such an excellent analysis of what traits curated content should have to be appreciated by Google.

But given the amount of content marketers adopting curation as the latest magic wand, his work provides a very useful warning for the many attempting to substitute curation for good quality content.

As in real-life, when it comes down to giving more exposure to different curators, both humans and Google will attempt to select those that:

1) put a lot of effort into their curation

2) have a strong editorial voice and

3) a distinctive point of view

and which heavily rely on:

4) recognized expert analysis7cmmentary and reviews

5) access to data otherwise not accessible

6) freshness

Rightful. Useful. 8/10

Content Curation: Copyright, Ethics & Fair Use

Content Curation: Copyright, Ethics & Fair Use | Content Curation Info | Scoop.it
Stefanie Blackburn's insight:

This is a great post on copyright, ethics and fair use when it comes to content curation.

It is very important that when you curate content you find that you properly source where you found it and give credit.

Here are some of the key points of this post to follow:

Best Practice #1:  Reproduce only those portions of the headline or article that are necessary to make your point or to identify the story. Do not reproduce the story in its entirety.

Best Practice #2:   Try not to use all, or even the majority, of articles available from a single source. Limit yourself to those articles that are directly relevant to your audience.

Best Practice #3.    Prominently identify the source of the article.

Best Practice #4.  Whenever possible, link to the original source

Best Practice #5.  When possible, provide context or commetary for the material you use

I personally feel that #5 sums up what content curation should be - you sharing your commetary on the information you find.

El arte de curar información en la Web es más que una práctica del conectivismo, es parte de un ejercicio de aprendizaje e inteligencia colectiva.
John Thomas's curator insight, February 12, 5:20 AM

Pawan Deshpande, founder and CEO of Curata, has just published an article that provides some very useful guidelines to content marketers interested in improving their basic content curation skills.

The article provides six alternative approaches to curating content, from simple ones like quoting and retitling, to more advanced ones like parallelizing, storyboarding and summarizing.

The context provided in this article circles around three key factors:

Quantity of effortSEO valueAdded value

so that you can compare, among the alternative curation approaches presented, the ones that better match your own needs.

But, beware. Though content marketing experts have you believe that saving time, seo impact and traffic size are key variables to go after, I remain of the impression that true "added value" provides order of magnitude greater benefits than the other two combined.

In other words, to rank and evaluate the value of a curation approach versus another, I would ask: Does the curation produced help other people make better sense of a topic? Does it allow for others to learn about an issue without having to juggle and research tens of dubious resources? Does it save the reader time in learning about the topic he's interested in while providing him with all the needed info?

Having said this, I deem this article particularly useful for content marketers getting interested in content curation, and in learning which approaches they can adopt, besides reposting and sharing the best content they can find, to improve their "value added" propositions.

Useful. Resourceful. 7/10
