This was the meme I, @josemota, and @etutoria prepared for The PLE Conference 2012 (1). Memes of this sort are supposed to be fun -  that’s what we tried to achieve through the choice of images.

I see myself as a wannabe content curator, someone who has to work hard, never mind the reasons.

What about you? How do people see you as a curator? How do you see others as content curators?

Curate and have fun too!

Curation, as a Pedagogical Tool To Embolden Critical Thinking in Education

Curation, as a Pedagogical Tool To Embolden Critical Thinking in Education | Content Curation for Online Education | Scoop.it
Exploring Curation as a core competency in digital and media literacy education

Via Robin Good
Benjamin Carmel's curator insight, May 6, 1:31 PM

Right, this is a topic I've been thinking and working with a lot lately. The authors discuss this as a tool for secondary school (mostly), but the principles apply equally to adult learners and collaboration, learning communities and communities of practice.

The reference list is also a valuable resource. More to add to my reading list...

PaolaRicaurte's curator insight, May 12, 8:49 AM

Robin Good's insight:

Paul Mihailidis, has an interesting essay on "Exploring Curation as a Core Competency in Digital an Media Literacy Education" in which he offers "a prospective attempt to build curation into the media literacy conversation..." by analyzing the analyzing effective curation practices, and six highly relevant teaching points for using a news curation tool like Storify in the classroom.

His essay "seeks to encourage instructors, particularly on secondary and tertiary education levels, to bridge the gap between informal learning outside of the classroom with formal learning to create a more dynamic place for students to advance critical inquiry, dialogue, and engagement through new forms of content creation, curation, and dissemination."

He writes: "Through student-driven, creation-driven, collective and integrated teaching approaches to curation, the framework aims to build towards savvy media consumption and production, critical evaluation and analysis, and participation in local, national and global dialog.

The framework also addresses the ability to see diversity and civic voice as core competencies in the curation process.

As students learn to build cohesive stories and ideas from a wide variety of sources, they can learn about the diverse types of content that inform a story, and the avenues they have-through social media tools and platforms-to be part of the discussion."

Curation can be an extremely effective approach to develop critical thinking skills and practices, as it forces students to evaluate, vet, verify and decide what really matters.

"When students develop a credible list of professional and personal sources around an issue and/or event, they must acknowledge how much subjective weight they place on a tweet, a blog, or a Facebook post and in relative comparison to an advocacy group, cable television operation, or news service. Arguing for the credibility of a myriad of voices online forces students to build valuable justifications for what they choose to believe, and why."

Informative. Examples-rich. Educationally useful. 8/10

Nancy White's curator insight, May 13, 9:12 AM

I am very excited to find this work to share with my teachers. I continue to get pushback as I try to encourage them to allow time for students to curate.  The fact of the matter is that true curation takes time, but the skills gained by students cannot be ignored, and research and critical analysis are found throughout the Common Core Standards. Curation is also a pathway to personalized learning as students pursue their own areas of interest through the art of curation.

Is Content Curation an Ethical Content Strategy? | Content Curation for Online Education | Scoop.it
Paula Silva's insight:

Although in the educational field this question may not be as critical as it is for marketing, it’s something one has to have in mind all the time.

Always give credit to content which is not yours (whatever its format).

As the author of the post writes: content curation «involves only using carefully selected parts of the content, adding relevant commentary or insight, or highlighting specific parts of it, and always assigning credit to the content’s originator (…)». Whether you are curating for educational purposes or for profit curation is an «honest endeavor that adds value, offers fresh perspectives, and enhances the ecosystem of ideas that is the digital landscape».

Web Curation And New Professions: The Content Curator

Web Curation And New Professions: The Content Curator | Content Curation for Online Education | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article on Mashable:
"Today, however, curation encompasses a whole new catalog of professions, brands and tools — and most revolve around the web.

A curator ingests, analyzes and contextualizes web content and information of a particular nature onto a platform or into a format we can understand. In other words, a curator is like that person at the beach with the metal detector, surfacing items and relics of perceived value. Only, a web curator shares those gems of content with their online audiences.

Some believe "curator" to be a reappropriated, throwaway term, one that simply elevates marginally focused web users.

Some media sites choose to curate articles already published and reported by other sites. For instance, Boing Boing and The Awl feed links that reference news reported by other sites around the web, tailoring content that will resonate with their readership.

More and more people are taking the reins into their own hands. Consumer curators are flocking to sites like The Fancy to browse products and silo them into categories. Other curation tools aren't as consumer-driven but nonetheless help users organize and structure web content that matters to them.

As much as the term gets criticized, curation requires patience, resourcefulness and a keen editing eye. It means becoming fluent in one particular dialect of the web, versus trying to speak its entire language. It's the reason journalists have beats, and the reason you chose one major in college, instead of seven.
Perhaps the best part? Curation is a never-ending job, and it never gets boring..."

Curation tools for researchers - Handbook of social media for researchers and supervisors | Content Curation for Online Education | Scoop.it

Here’s some more evidence that curation is crucial for researchers, whether you choose to be a curator or you choose to follow curators.
According to Minocha and Petre (2012) from The Open University, UK (1), curation is useful for researchers and for developing research skills, as it involves:
- information management;
- curating content on the research topic of interest which appears on a variety of different media;
- chances of attracting interesting people to a researcher’s website;
- development of your "infotention", mindfulness, and concentration;
- self-empowerment, helping you to be seen and trusted as a “topic expert”.

Become a content curator in three steps:
1- Do it on a specific topic so that you are seen as a trusted source or expert on that topic;
2- Share only the best stuff;
3- Do it continuously so that you are continuously providing up-to-date content.
