8 digital skills we must teach our children | #DQ #DigitalQuotient #EQ #EmotionalQuotient

8 digital skills we must teach our children | #DQ #DigitalQuotient #EQ #EmotionalQuotient | Content Curation for Learning | Scoop.it
The digital world is a vast expanse of learning and entertainment. But it is in this digital world that kids are also exposed to many risks, such as cyberbullying, technology addiction, obscene and violent content, radicalization, scams and data theft. The problem lies in the fast and ever evolving nature of the digital world, where proper internet governance and policies for child protection are slow to catch up, rendering them ineffective.

Moreover, there is the digital age gap. The way children use technology is very different from adults. This gap makes it difficult for parents and educators to fully understand the risks and threats that children could face online. As a result, adults may feel unable to advise children on the safe and responsible use of digital technologies. Likewise, this gap gives rise to different perspectives of what is considered acceptable behaviour.

So how can we, as parents, educators and leaders, prepare our children for the digital age? Without a doubt, it is critical for us to equip them with digital intelligence.

Curation: Manage Your Attention Not Just Your Time

Curation: Manage Your Attention Not Just Your Time | Content Curation for Learning | Scoop.it

This guest post is by Beth Kanter for Socialbrite and this is great for curators just starting out or a refresher for those of you who have been doing this for a while.

She tells you why curation is an important tool in your content strategy and gives you some good suggestions on how to do it effectively which I'm going to focus on here. Curation requires time and energy, and Beth's process really works because I'm doing this myself.

Here's what caught my attention:

Manage you attention, not just your time

**Don't just create a to-do list; lay it out on a daily and weekly schedules, breaking down key tasks of the project into chunks.

**Consider the level of concentration and focus that each type of task or chunk requires and schedule accordingly

**Establish rituals: Rituals in your work life are valuable. A mindmap offers a lot of good suggestions for rituals

**Managing email and other distractions: Turn off notifications that pop up on your computer, iPad or moble.

**Just say no - it's important to engage with your community on social networks but you have to find the right balance. When you're curating, it requires focus, it's best to schedule this first, then do your community management, check your email unless something requires your immediate attention. When you have a plan, it makes everything easier.

Curious About Design Thinking? Here's a Framework You Can Use in Any Classroom with Any Age Group | John Spencer

Curious About Design Thinking? Here's a Framework You Can Use in Any Classroom with Any Age Group | John Spencer | Content Curation for Learning | Scoop.it
The term "design thinking" is often attached to maker spaces and STEM labs. However, design thinking is bigger than STEM. It begins with the premise of tapping into student curiosity and allowing them to create, test and re-create until they eventually ship what they made to a real audience (sometimes global but often local). Design thinking isn't a subject or a topic or a class. It's more of way of solving problems that encourages risk-taking and creativity.

Design thinking is a flexible framework for getting the most out of the creative process. It is used in the arts, in engineering, in the corporate world, and in social and civic spaces. You can use it in every subject with every age group. It works when creating digital content or when building things with duct tape and cardboard.

Description by edtechteacher

"No longer do images that teachers and students use for presentations have to be static presentations. Thinglink is a new web tool that allows images to be uploaded and tagged with hot spots. These hot spots can be text, links to web based content, or YouTube videos. When the image is viewed online, the hot spots become click-able and reveal the embedded content. Thinglink allows for a completely new approach to using images in the classroom and provides a new medium by which students can present image based content for projects or assignments.:

Three Traits of Great Curation - Reduced, Relevant and Reliable

Three Traits of Great Curation - Reduced, Relevant and Reliable | Content Curation for Learning | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Jim Love, writes on his blog "Change the Game", a long article about curation and its reason d'etre.

Interesting thoughts overall, but the most valuable part, is in a few paragraphs, that distill clearly three important characterizing traits for quality curation.

Here is the part that caught my attention:

"Curation is a a filter.

An intelligent agent goes through the volume and the clutter and brings us a distilled version, reduced to it’s essence.

Great curation does three things. I call them the “3 Rs” - short for reduced, relevant and reliable.

Curation reduces the volume information from a particular domain to make it more manageable. It distills things to their essence.

It ensures that the information is relevant. Does it fit our interests and our needs? This is more difficult than it seems. Especially where the topic is new or unfamiliar we don’t always know what is valuable or how to describe it. It can also be intensely personal. We all have slightly different levels of need and the nuances of those needs are sometimes subtle.

Lastly, information must be reliable. Accuracy is critical and in the current world, difficult to establish. Is the story correct? Is the source reliable?"

Rightful. 8/10
