What a great post this is, with really good insights about engagement.


We know marketing, branding, and other business storytelling applications are beginning to make the switch into engagement. This post is written from the field of journalism about what engagement looks and feels like -- for example, the need for interdisciplinary skills.


Here are 3 ways to get the most insights from this article: 

  1. Read it through once as is.
  2. Read it through again, and substitute the word "storytelling" for the word "journalism".
  3. Read it through a third time, and substitute the word "marketing" for the word "journalism".

Every so often, a traditionally non-business word finds its way into the business world, fueled by an admirable desire to find new ways to think about old challenges. “Storytelling” has become one of those words.

 

What a nicely written article pointing to several truisms in business storytelling. Some you are familiar with (storytelling is a pull, not a push technology). I like the ones that I don't read much about:
1. Storytelling is a selfless, empowering act
2. Storytelling looks to the future

 

As the author Bill Baker (from Marketing Profs) says, "Successful storytelling respects the past and appreciates the present, but it also looks boldly into the future, moving people past “what is” to “what if?” Done well, storytelling helps people collectively imagine a vision of the future that is achievable and worth achieving, helping them to understand not only what they’re working on but also what they’re working toward." Yes!

 

And, "As you consider using storytelling strategically to give meaning to your brand communications or employee-engagement efforts, don’t do so simply because it is “the next big thing.” Do it because, if you truly listen and you are willing to be generous, authentic, emotional, and collectively creative— it works. As one senior client recently said, “This is a bit frightening. I feel vulnerable; but at the same time, because I’m being myself, I feel more confident.” If your organization is ready for that journey, there’s a great story ahead."

To go hand in hand with the HBR research on how stories influence behavior, we've got this SlideShare program by @CarlaJohnson on how to work with stories to boost engagement.


Pay attention to the model on slide 18. It looks very interesting.


Two companies are profiled -- Blackberry and MolsonCoors. I like the MolsonCoors example the best. It has more robust and meaningful results. They are quite impressive.


So the model seems to work. Would it apply to every company, do you think?

Once again Forbes writer Nick Morgan has written an article that is spot on -- about speaking and humbleness.


I can hear you saying "But of course, you want to be humble!" Yeah, well all of my clients struggle with one and Nick's post talks about how to get it done.


It's not that my clients are arrogant. In fact, they are the exact opposite. But they all think that sharing their stories is bragging about themselves. They don't want to be arrogant and fear being perceived that way through their storytelling. So we tackle this right up front and I make many of the same points the author does.


Nick wrote some excellent points to consider. And I like the examples he shares of prominent speakers who were not perceived as narcissistic, egotistical, or conceited even though they are/were larger than life.


There is even some current research shared on humbleness and leadership. This is well worth the read if ever you have anxiety about sharing your stories.
