Le géant américain Google (groupe Alphabet) a l’intention de fermer son service de photos en ligne Picasa, pour se concentrer sur le plus récent Google Photos. Sur l’un de ses blogs officiels, il a expliqué, vendredi 12 février, vouloir privilégier « un seul service qui offre davantage de fonctionnalités et fonctionne sur mobile et sur ordinateur, plutôt que de diviser nos efforts entre deux différents produits ».

Les changements pour les utilisateurs commenceront à être mis en Ĺ“uvre au début de mai. Google fait valoir que pour ceux qui ont des albums Picasa en ligne, « le moyen le plus facile d’encore accéder, modifier et partager la plupart de ce contenu est de se connecter à Google Photos » : les photos et vidéos existantes y seront automatiquement intégrées.

Il promet toutefois aussi de mettre en place « un nouvel endroit pour accéder aux données des albums en ligne Picasa » : les contenus pourront y être regardés, téléchargés ou effacés, mais il sera impossible de les éditer ou de créer de nouveaux albums.

Google prévient par ailleurs qu’il arrêtera dès le 15 mars le support technique de l’application Picasa pour ordinateur de bureau. Elle restera utilisable pour ceux l’ayant téléchargée avant cette date, mais il n’y aura plus de mise à jour.
