A Mix of Algorithms and Human Curators Is The Solution To Content Curation Scalability Issue

A Mix of Algorithms and Human Curators Is The Solution To Content Curation Scalability Issue | Content Creation, Curation, Management | Scoop.it

Guillame DeCugis: "This is a very interesting piece by Erin Griffith (again!) on the potential scalability issues of content curation. You can pass quickly on her first part where she easily bashes the usual concerns about the curation word being overhyped and over used.

She makes a really good point on her second part, building on the experience of Behance, the platform to publish one's creative work: using a mix of algorithms and human curation is a part of the answer to this scale issue.

But another way to scale curation is to add a topic-centric layer. In the problem she describes (which is typically Behance's problem), scaling up is tough because curation is being applied to sort out the best content on a unique dimension: a home page that's the same for everyone.

"Behance’s front page could no longer display what algorithms determined was the most popular art within [the] site’s community. Because of boobs. They are universally the most popular thing on the Web, and not even a tasteful, creative site like Behance is safe when the “wisdom of the crowd” is involved.

To be clear — boobs are welcome on Behance, but the site skews toward commercially viable work. A porn pit may entice creative directors but not in the way Behance wants to entice them." she funnily writes.

If you added topics to that, you can solve the problem by having people follow whichever topics they want.

And I'm not talking about the usual 10-20 categories you find on any content sites. I'm talking about long-tail, user-created topics that any user can opt in to follow or unfollow. Boobs fans can then follow dozens of Boobs topics curated by other fellow users without having to pollute the experience for everyone else.

By mixing a topic-centric model with curation, you apply it to as many dimensions as your users will decide to curate. That's the model we've been using at Scoop.it and so far, it scales pretty well, doesn't it?"

Robin Good: For the record you may want to check this video of Gabe Rivera from Techmeme at LeWeb 2008 already discussing this issue and arriving at the same conclusions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4Zi_U6iZxU there's no way to build a perfect news or aggregation engine. The best solution is indeed a mix of aggregation and filtering tools matched by a topic-expert curator.

Don't Be a Content Marketing Dinosaur -- 5 Must-Haves to Stay Current | Content Creation, Curation, Management | Scoop.it

In 2014, staying current means keeping up to date on how the content-marketing scene shifts on an almost month-to-month basis. Content marketers are constantly getting better at what they do and audiences are becoming more discerning. Content marketing in 2015 -- research, not predictions - iMediaConnection.com

Content marketing in 2015 -- research, not predictions - iMediaConnection.com | Content Creation, Curation, Management | Scoop.it
The next big thing in content marketing technology, the content marketing stack, will develop significantly in 2015. Content stacks are necessary to consolidate the eight content marketing use cases identified in research we published on the content software landscape. No use case is an island. As organizations mature and become more strategic in their content marketing initiatives, it becomes imperative to seamlessly link execution to analytics, or optimization, or targeting, for example. We'll soon see end-to-end offerings from the big enterprise players: Adobe, Oracle, and Salesforce.com. All are scrambling to integrate multiple content point solutions into seamless "stacks," similar to the ad stack. In fact, content stacks will talk to the ad stacks, helping to integrate paid, owned and earned media. A couple years out, these two stacks will comprise what we refer to today as the marketing cloud.

The Best SlideShare Presentations of 2014 [SlideShare] | Content Creation, Curation, Management | Scoop.it
“I don't know about you, but I love SlideShare -- both as a marketer, and just as a regular person who likes to look at cool presentations. As a marketer, I love that the platform lets you create and publish interactive, beautiful pieces of content without a ton of design experience. As a person who likes to look at cool presentations, I love that there are tons of great ones to choose from that cover all manner of topics. That being said, I do have one gripe with SlideShare: With so much content to choose from, it can be difficult to figure out which presentations are actually worth your time.Well, discovering the best presentations just became a lot easier: The folks over at SlideShare sorted through and handpicked the very best SlideShare presentations of 2014 and put them together into the SlideShare below. (So meta, I know.) Flip through to see the top presentations from 2014 on business, leadership, design, and career development (among others). Find one you like? Click on the slide itself to be taken to the presentation. By the end, you'll have plenty of presentation to inspire your next deck ... or at the very least, teach you something new.”

5 Storytelling Lessons from the History of Humanity | The Spundge Blog

5 Storytelling Lessons from the History of Humanity | The Spundge Blog | Content Creation, Curation, Management | Scoop.it

"Storytelling has been one of our defining human characteristic, even before we developed oral languages. Signs, marks on the skin, drawings on the sand, were common ways to communicate achievements, the location of water, or the whereabouts of dangerous enemies waiting to ambush their prey. With time, we have developed sophisticated ways of transforming information into narratives, relaying messages, and conveying images."

Read the full article to see examples and find out how to make stories memorable using these 5 storytelling lessons from history:

  1. The Lascaux & Chauvet caves in France - the caveman lesson:   Use familiar images. Pick visuals that your audience can relate to, and pair them with your message. Your audience will understand it and remember it vividly.
  2. Hieroglyphics... Infographics? -  the mummy lesson:  Present your hard data using infographics while threading a compelling story. Combine this with the Caveman Lesson: use familiar images and your audience will understand and relate to your message, and most importantly, remember it.

  3. The Bible, Coran, Talmud, Vedas - the God almighty lesson:  Build narratives around things that you know and use shared and common examples so your audience can relate. Use repetition when you cannot use images and do so in subtle ways, introducing slight variations each time. Then re-write, re-write, and re-write once again…

  4. Aesop's Fables and the moral of the story - the fabulist lesson:  Be concise. Make your story self-explanatory, and don’t give all the answers. Never underestimate your audience’s intelligence: provide value, guide them, and let them come to their own conclusions.

  5. Reason & emotion: The stories of William Shakespeare - the bard's lesson:  Plan your story and give it a clear plot with a well defined arc — it will keep your audience engaged. Know your audience and make sure your story uses the right voice, style and language.

You're Not Relevant: 6 Content Marketing Tips to Avoid Blending In

You're Not Relevant: 6 Content Marketing Tips to Avoid Blending In | Content Creation, Curation, Management | Scoop.it
Being relevant means to be closely connected. When customers align with your brand and feel connected, they start to develop trust in you and your products and services. Revenue grows as trust is strengthened.

When it comes to marketing, there is nothing worse than blending in. Being considered “not relevant” either through your marketing messages or by word-of-mouth, does no one any good. Companies send us information all the time but it’s often not very relevant or valuable (aka: spam). When you’re not relevant, you’re forgotten. Good content marketing makes a person stop…read… think… behave… differently.
