Yes, Robin, I figured that. ;) It really is obvious that we don´t lack tools for just about any type of activity in social media anymore. Finding just the "right tools" and right forums to tell your stories to right audiences is a challenge for beginners. The coolest thing is, of course, when you find listeners you never knew existed. That´s when the whole thing gets interesting.

Many good ideas can be found here regarding what we need to teach students about curating digital content for learning.  The importance of story - and to really look at something (or read it!).  The importance of asking quesitons and seeking answers before adding it to your curated collection to determine if it is a good fit. There are many parallels to the world of digital curation.

The More You Automate, The Less You Curate: Sense-Making Requires Manual Effort

The More You Automate, The Less You Curate: Sense-Making Requires Manual Effort | Content and Curation for Nonprofits | Scoop.it
Beth Kanter's insight:

I've been using Harold's model "Seek, Sense, Share" to explain the process of content curation to nonprofits.   He first published it back in 2011 and I actually made my New Year's resolution for professional learning (http://www.bethkanter.org/seek-sense-share/)

In 2011, I had noticed that I needed to pay more attention to training my attention and to be more intentional about how I was sharing information.   The Seek-Sense-Share framework really helped me.   When I discovered content curation, I realized that I was doing it, but from reading Robin Good's work - I wasn't doing well.

I connected Harold's framework to content curation  -- http://www.bethkanter.org/content-curation-101/ because like everything else I learn, I am turning around and using it in training - so I thought it was perfect.

Harold has updated his model and fine-tuned it for content curation.

Robin Good found it put into context - and related to the need for some sort of human intervention - to pick, select, and contextualize content - not just aggregate.   I always appreciate Robin's great reminders about the need to be "brains on" when comes to curation.

Curation is not clicking, not cut and paste, not mindless sharing.  You have to be disicplined about being intentional - and focus.

News and Topic Monitoring: Eight Alternatives If Google Kills "Alerts" | Content and Curation for Nonprofits | Scoop.it

"Google Alerts have become a critical part of my business from brand monitoring to topic monitoring, but it may be going away."

Via Robin Good, Howard Rheingold
Beth Kanter's insight:

Nonprofits use monitoring tools as part of their "listening  Strategy" and they also come in handy for the "discovery" part of the content curation process. Many nonprofits tend to be using Google Alerts because it is free.

After seeing Google Reader Walk the plank (http://www.bethkanter.org/rip-google-reader/), even though it is still a rumor that Google Alerts will also be killed off, I did not want to get caught in it.    I switched over to Mention because it is free, easy to use, and great for nonprofits.      Here's a discussion I started on my FB Brand page where other alternatives were also mentioned in the thread.    However, I like the discipline and rigor of this analysis.

Optimize Your Content Marketing Strategy with 8 Keyword Tracking Tips

Optimize Your Content Marketing Strategy with 8 Keyword Tracking Tips | Content and Curation for Nonprofits | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article on Content Marketing Institute:
" If the success of your content marketing strategy is in any way dependent on your search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine rankings, there are plenty of tools and tactics available that might merit your time and effort to explore.

Here are eight ways I check keyword rankings as a part of an overall SEO-focused content marketing strategy:

1. WebCEO
With WebCEO, I can quickly see rankings for the main search engines and look at the data from different angles, including history over months and how many keywords are ranking for the same page.

2. SEOmoz Pro
It’s easy to add keywords to a campaign and get a sense of rankings over time. SEOmoz offers automated reports, which can be very helpful when analyzing whether your content marketing strategy is moving in the right direction, from an SEO perspective.

3. SheerSEO
With it, I can look at the historical performance of that keyword, to see if it is likely to remain valuable, or if its current popularity is an anomaly.

4. SEMrush
SEMrush does provide an incredible amount of information (including competitive research) based on the more than 90 million keywords that it monitors in its database.

5. Browser extensions
If you are looking for some desktop apps that can give you a quick snapshot of your search performance, try checking your rankings using tools like the "SEO SERP Workbench" (Chrome extension) or "Rank Checker" from "SEO Book".

6. iPhone/Mobile
If you disable the office’s WiFi network, you can also see results that aren’t tied to the business’ IP address.

7. Friends
On some occasions, I’ll ask a friend or colleague to conduct a quick keyword search, so I can compare my results with theirs.

8. Search engine spot checks
As a work-around, when I check rankings on Google, I make sure I’m not logged into my Google account, and I disable my browsing history.

Bonus recommendations and advice:
- If you’re going to monitor your keyword rankings, I recommend that you keep your analyses to a minimum (once a month). Whether you look at ranking data daily, weekly or monthly, track conversion metrics as well.
- Even a No. 1 ranking on Google or Bing will be absolutely meaningless if no one in your target audience is searching for that term.
- Search volume and traffic can drop off during different times of the year.
- every content strategy must factor in the value of your current content, the content you are looking to develop in the future, and the potential both offer for increasing inbound links, leads, and engagement..."

Beth Kanter's insight:

This is a good deck and insights -- many nonprofits and foundations are not leveraging the platform.

Arabella Santiago's curator insight, May 24, 1:38 PM

On May 22, 2013, SlideShare’s Kevin Fisher presented “Beef-up Your Lean Content Marketing Efforts with SlideShare” at the Lean Content Meetup in San Francisco. In his presentation, he summarizes “content marketing” and applies Lean Content ideas to the use of SlideShare for B2B Marketing. His example of the tractor brand John Deere publishing content to help farmers become better at farming illustrates how providing knowledgeable and relevant information on a topic of expertise builds brand equity. At Scoop.it, we believe brands that understand the importance of engaging customers through smart content, look smart and gather communities of interests that turn into a loyal base of consumers and evangelists. Once this need to discover, publish and share relevant content is established, the Lean Content method can be applied to producing content pieces in an efficient and effective way through the Build-Measure-Learn cycle heralded by the Lean Startup.

Kevin also reviewed the SlideShare platform and showed an impressive audience of professionals. If you are looking to reach such a consumer-base, be sure to find ways to leverage SlideShare. Our team at Scoop.it has found great value in publishing presentations on SlideShare, and we even saw success on SlideShare’s video platform vs. YouTube. We tested this concept by uploading the same video on both platforms -- and the video on SlideShare performed exponentially better. This an application of the Lean methodology of testing and measuring impact.

The Top Role Of Content Creation And Curation: Gartner's 2013 Social Marketing Survey

The Top Role Of Content Creation And Curation: Gartner's 2013 Social Marketing Survey | Content and Curation for Nonprofits | Scoop.it

Part of this research is available to the general public, free of charge.
Excerpted from article about this Gartner's 2013 Social Marketing Survey:
"Summary: Gartner's 2013 U.S. Digital Marketing Spending Survey found that investments in content creation and social marketing totaled 21% of digital marketing budgets. Here we dive deeper into the implications of the content imperative for your social marketing strategy.

Overview:
- Impacts
a) Forty-seven percent of survey respondents see content creation and curation as the top role of their social marketing teams, often forcing them to outsource.
b) Digital marketers achieving effective social marketing create and curate content that speaks with an authentic voice.

- Recommendations
a) Balance outsourced content services with in-house expertise, building internal content creation and curation skills, while utilizing agencies and service providers to scale.
b) Develop a style guide to formalize your brand's voice and values, to clarify rules of engagement and to enforce companywide standards."

[There is a detailed analysis in the full article.]

Moreover, Jake Sorofman, Research Director at Gartner, adds some insights in his blog post:
"So it’s perhaps no surprise that Gartner’s 2013 social marketing survey pointed to content creation and curation as the key areas of focus for social marketing organizations—and the most outsourced function.

What’s different about content in the age of the social web?

- It’s human: it speaks with a conversational voice, from one human being to another. Thought isn’t hidden behind stilted corporate speak, chest-thumping claims and pompous language.
- It’s neutral: perhaps not wholly objective, but it holds fire on the hard sell in favor of issues-centric storytelling that supports a brand’s point of view without always making the brand the hero.
- It’s simple: attention spans aren’t what they used to be and competition for that limited attention has reached a fever pitch.
- It’s visual: It’s also easier to consume when you’re already up to your eyeballs in dense text.
- It’s curated: you don’t have to create all of your own content. Leverage happens when you organize and annotate third-party content that helps tell your story or sell your point of view.
- It’s conversational: communities talk back to sustain the dialogue in the form of comments, reviews, ratings and new content of their own that defends or argues against your point of view.
- It’s organic: it’s published fast, often in response to unpredictable moments."
