My affair with Fuji... | Bill Gekas

My affair with Fuji... | Bill Gekas | Contemporary Photography | Scoop.it

As most people know I've been shooting with the Pentax system since I started photography when I was shooting film using a Pentax ME-Super and K1000 bodies which I still have in some cupboard somewhere. I never considered switching systems as the Pentax system was always adequate for what I was doing and once they brought out their digital bodies I continued with their digital cameras as I could use my older manual focus prime lenses on their latest bodies. By that time I also had invested enough into the system that switching to any other system would have been a costly exercise with no real gain or benefit with my work so i've been happily doing what I do with the system, but after almost 20 years of shooting with Pentax i'm now at a crossroads.....

"The selection ranges from the prosaic to the fantastic, from the playful to the disturbing, to explore the adult’s view of the baby but also to suggest the extraordinary perception of the baby at newly discovering the strange world that surrounds them. The agendas vary greatly."

Campagne Hermès 2015: In the Eye of the Flâneur, Harry Gruyaert | Contemporary Photography | Scoop.it

Every year for its ad campaigns, Hermès is faced with a challenge: how can they translate the company’s spirit, innovations and traditions into pictures? Magazines can showcase their products, but how can the company showcase the unique Hermès style?

Mario Pires's curator insight, March 27, 2015 6:01 AM

"What happens when we wander through a city? We see a girl in the distance, the city is moving. It’s very important. That gave us leads but also discipline. And that’s one of the joys of the campaigns we produce. An encounter takes place between us and the photographer. At Hermès, we like to have encounters with artists and musicians. It sparks a kind of renewal of the image and expression that makes us tick."

Samyang 135mm T2.2 ED UMC CINE DS ( 135mm f/2 ED UMC ) - Review / Test Report

Samyang 135mm T2.2 ED UMC CINE DS ( 135mm f/2 ED UMC ) - Review / Test Report | Contemporary Photography | Scoop.it
There's quite a number of rather exotic third party manufacturers out there. Some come and go whereas others are here to stay. Samyang, a Korean manufacturer, is clearly in this 2nd group. In fact they are also OEMing their lenses to "brands" such as Bower, Rokinon or Walimex. During the recent years Samyang provided a fairly large number of interesting lenses for both mirrorless and DSLR systems. Their lenses lack an electronic coupling as well as AF which prevents them from entering into the mainstream so far. However, the optical quality of their products is often impressive and up there with the big boys. Their latest product (as of this review) is the Samyang 135mm T2.2 ED UMC CINE DS. As the name implies, it is optimized for smooth (step-less) aperture and focus transitions which is important for movie makers (hence the "CINE"). However, the lens is also available in a conventional, photography-centric incarnation (Samyang 135mm f/2 ED UMC) featuring distinctive aperture clicks, a shorter focus path and differently designed control rings. However, the optical design remains the same so the our findings are applicable to both variants.
Some users may be confused by the rather unfamiliar T2.2 vs f/2 naming convention. The T-value simply describes the light transmission characteristic whereas the f-value is equivalent to the numerical ratio of focal length and aperture diameter. In real life terms, it doesn't really make much of difference. The T-value is simply more common in the movie arena.

Olympus OM-D E-M5 II Review: Digital Photography Review

Olympus OM-D E-M5 II Review: Digital Photography Review | Contemporary Photography | Scoop.it

The Olympus OM-D E-M5 II follows-up on the groundbreaking original E-M5 and brings extra control points (a lot of them) a 40MP high-res mode, better video, improved image stabilization and a host of other refinements, large and small. We've been shooting a lot with the E-M5 II over the past few weeks, and that work has culminated in a full review, with our usual combination of studio and real-world tests.

Editing with Miska Draskoczy

Editing with Miska Draskoczy | Contemporary Photography | Scoop.it

We are talking to a range of photographers, photo editors, professors of photography, book designers and others about the physical process of editing images. Selecting, sequencing and laying out photographs - be it for a magazine, book, online site or gallery presentation - seems something of a mysterious process for many photographers and a process that seems perhaps hard to give words to.

Mario Pires's curator insight, April 9, 2015 9:21 AM

"I tend to be exhaustive at first, trying many edit combinations and quickly discarding those which are definitely not going to work. I'll start small and build up, identifying various pairs that go well with each other, and then building pairs of pairs and onwards. It feels like writing or music: using notes to make bars, choruses and songs, or words to make sentences, paragraphs and chapters."

Mario Pires's curator insight, March 22, 2015 5:33 AM

"I like the idea of trespassing. I got to write that down too. It’s quite true that what I am aiming at, even when I take portraits, is to get a scandalous picture. I would love to be a paparazzo. I was aware of Weegee in the fifties, I was turned on by Brassai and by Dr. Salomon. He was traspassing, of course. In the most outrageous but in the chiquest possible way. Lartigue was very chic too, but I don’t think he trespassed, he was part of the set."

I always advocate taking the time to enter some awards, if you win there is usually quite a lot of exposure that goes with it. Many ask an entry fee, so you need to be choosy. Go for ones that get lots of publicity, that way you get more than just a prize, you get yourself out there which is good. Some of those who notice you may become your followers …
