Since 2008 and the recession, employees have gone into survival mode.  They are surviving work.  This means doing what it takes to make a buck and stay afloat.  Sometimes that means losing their home to foreclosure in order to pay their other bills, moonlighting at a second job, or working at a crappy job that didn’t give a damn.

It is amazing to see how the economy has not only affected the employment rates but also the management/leadership's attitudes towards their employees. The sad trends highlighted in this article have become common in today's organizations for the past 5 years. But leaders and managers, beware that these attitudes are short-sighted and going to become your own trap once the economy swings up again...

I totally agree with the author of this article. In this fast-paced constantly changing environment where an organization might need to adjust to the environmental changes a few times a year, annual performance reviews should be obsolete. What I believe should be replacing reviews is managerial coaching that would ensure employees meet their goals, exceed their goals, and consistently grow throughout the year.
