Ann Hamilton was born in Lima, Ohio in 1956. She studied textile design at the University of Kansas and received her MFA from Yale University. She taught at the University of California at Santa Barbara for seven years and currently lives and works in Ohio. Her degree is in sculpture but textiles and fabric are a significant focus in her work. Her work also includes: installations, photographs, videos, performances, objects. She is equally concerned with verbal and written language as she is with the visual. She connects writing and sewing. She grew up sewing and knitting and finds it to be rewarding. She feels like all the threads in a cloth are dependent on one another. She works with words as material. She views installations as an animating of the space. She considers what she will do to the space and what it will do to her when she installs her work.

These visuals are my absolute favorite. They basically categorize the way society observes certain locations. I can use this to not only entertain my audience but to see if they share the same views.

Artist Amalia Mesa Bains is an artist that looks to the landscape to find the struggles of under represented populations. She notices that the worst environmental damaged areas coincide where the poorest people live. She looks to address nature through spirituallity and stewardship in an effort to heal the wrongs and conditions people have suffered and lived through. She is sensitive to the narrative created by the places and people that inhabit them. As an artist activist, she brings narratives from multicultural and feminist points of view in hopes of inspiring collaborations within communities for art and activism for social justice.

Hunter Rion's curator insight, July 6, 2014 8:49 AM

Barry McGee was born in California in 1966. He continues to live and work in San Francisco. He received his BFA in painting and printmaking from San Francisco Art Institute. His work includes drawings, paintings, and mixed media installations. His work is inspired by contemporary urban culture. He has been a graffiti artist since the 1980s. He views graffiti as a method of communication that evokes truth compare to commercialism, which he views as damaging.  He uses found and invented imagery, tags, and other objects in his work. He is influenced by the Mexican muralists, tramp art, 70s and 80s graffiti artists and the San Francisco Beat poets. He has been resistant to the conventional art world but has recently become more open to exhibiting his work in galleries and museums. This installation at UCLA/Armand Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, in 2000, features a collection of spray paint cans, clusters of framed contemporary urban imagery organized strategically by the artist. It appears that he content of the installation is advocating for graffiti artists.

Aziz and Cucher's collaborative interest is in “creating visual metaphors for the increasing role that new technologies play in our lives and how they affect us politically, socially, and psychologically.” The artists use photography and digitally edit out the mouths and eyes of the people. It's interesting how the artists use technology in their artistic process while they reflect on the role of technology and how it affects us as humans.
