A Dream Beach House for the Eco-Minded...

A Dream Beach House for the Eco-Minded... | Container Architecture | Scoop.it
It’s a testament to the ebbing tide of starchitecture that some of the most admired new buildings of recent memory are the ones you hardly notice at all.

The design brief called for a very low-impact, easy to maintain summer home that provides necessary programmatic functions with minimum distractions from the land and the view. The design response situates the structure among mature fir trees located directly between the beach and an upland meadow, with walls of glass opening out to both. Steel columns minimize visible structure from the interior, while metal-clad wall elements provide a bold form when seen from the exterior. The roof is vegetated, which filters rainwater that in turn is collected and stored for use in irrigation. Potable hot water and hydronic heating are aided by solar collectors on the roof, and PV panel s above the vegetable garden provide supplemental electricity. The home is intended for occupancy from May through October, and systems have been designed to zero out electricity use over the course of a full year.

the Convent de Sant Francesc, Spain + Historic Preservation

the Convent de Sant Francesc, Spain + Historic Preservation | Container Architecture | Scoop.it

The intervention in the church of the convent of Sant Francesc, located in the Catalan town of Santpedor, converted the building into a cultural facility, allowing the building to be put to use as an auditorium and multipurpose cultural space. In the future, a third stage will allow the upper floors of the chapels to be used as a historical archive.

The renovation of the building has been developed with the goal of differentiating the new elements constructed (using contemporary construction systems and languages) from the original elements of this historical church.

With the aim of preserving all aspects of the building’s past, the intervention has not hidden traces, wounds or scars. Thus, they have remained visible depressions, holes where the altarpieces once were, traces of missing elements.

The construction and the building methods used have sought to strengthen the church without deleting the signs of deterioration the building has suffered. The intervention has sought to preserve the building’s historic legacy by adding new valuesthat enhance it and give this ancient convent a unique, contemporary form...

Blaxland Riverside Park by JMD Design

Blaxland Riverside Park by JMD Design | Container Architecture | Scoop.it

JMD Design have completed the Blaxland Riverside Park in Sydney, Australia.

The new playground makes extensive use of landform to house a variety of play experiences and elements that caters for the entire family. The landform extends some 300 metres from the Giant swing to the Tonkin Zulaikha Greer designed kiosk. Nestled into dramatic cuts in the landform are tunnel slides, embankment slides, a climbing net, flying fox, sand pit, and a waterplay disc that houses 170 jets. These are programmed to create tunnels, enclosures, lines and spots of water that are at times gentle, at times boisterous. A 12 metres high treehouse overlooks the entire playground and gives long views along the Parramatta River. The highly popular playground is serviced by a new JMD designed extension to the carpark and a Tonkin Zulaikha Greer designed amenities block...

Pre-Fabricated: 2 | SPG Architects

Pre-Fabricated: 2 | SPG Architects | Container Architecture | Scoop.it

This four-bedroom vacation home is a study in spatial efficiency, coming in under 2,000 SF of living area including 1,700 SF of modular construction and 240 SF of site-built construction.

The design can be adapted to any site of the owners choosing. The two-story factory-built modular house has a reverse living plan to maximize available terraces and views for the primary family kitchen, dining and living areas, while tucking three bedrooms and a master suite into the lower level.

Conceived specifically to touch lightly on the landscape both during and after construction, this home is ideal for flood-prone areas. This home is comprised of two living volumes that are joined by a prefabricated, site assembled entrance staircase that provides an immediate visual and physical connection to the upper level.

Each volume is made of two stacked modular units, that when raised on piloti, allow the landscape to move through and under the house that provides an environmentally sensitive and visually dramatic design solution...
