Academic and student use of a learning management system: Implications for quality

by Debbi Weaver, Christine Spratt and Chenicheri Sid Nair

Australasian Journal of Educational Technology, 2008, 24(1), 30-41

Using a Learning Management System can be relatively easy.  Producing quality online opportunities for engaged and active learning is not as easy.  This paper examines what features staff and students were using (in WebCT) and what experience they had using these features.  Faculty and student perceptions are discussed.  Their results demonstrate that, despite good intentions, the online learning created in an LMS tends to still be teacher-centric.  They recommend that "if academic teaching staff are to engage with technology in ways that encourage them to innovate, then institutions must 'make such efforts to enhance the learning of their students a high priority and back this in practice'"(p. 39).

Motivational Factors Affecting the Integration of a Learning Management System by Faculty

by Cynthia Gautreau, California State University Fullerton

The Journal of Educators Online, Volume 8, Number 1, January 2011

Whether you are teaching a face to face class, a hybrid class (some face to face and some online), a synchronous class (same time and different place from your students) or an asynchronous class (different time and different place from your students), a technology-enriched program at UOIT requires the use of a learning management system.

This article discusses the tools of a learning management system (LMS) briefly and then explores "the motivation hygiene theory, the diffusion of innovations theory and change theory as it relates to technology integration" (p. 5).  As recommendations, the author finds that promoting faculty development programs to address needs and improving the use of technology as a tool for the classroom are key to responding to the needed application of the resources of an LMS.

The role of involvement in learning management system success

by: Jane E. Klobas and Tanya J. McGill

J Comput High Educ (2010) 22:114-134

How can we make the use of a learning management system (LMS) more meaningful?  This article describes a study of students enrolled in an Australian university.  Their conclusion is that involvement on the part of both the students and the instructor is key to the success of the LMS implementation.  Further, they also find that looking at the manner in which the LMS is used is more important than examining the extent of use.

The Teaching and Learning Centre has identified this as a key strategic priority for their training and pedagogical support of faculty.  You will notice a change in workshop names related more to the benefit of using a tool as opposed to how to use the tool.  We hope to be able to provide an even stronger support to faculty and, ultimately, bring a greater benefit to the students of UOIT.
