ModCloth Hits $100 Million In Revenue, Gives Social All The Credit

ModCloth Hits $100 Million In Revenue, Gives Social All The Credit | Consumption Junction | Scoop.it

Here's a big social business success story...The 'love' button may be the most-clicked on ModCloth's platform. But with $100 M in 2012 revenue, 'checkout' is a close second....“The ‘love’ button is the most used button on our site,” ModCloth CEO Eric Koger told me this June on a visit to the East Coast from the company’s San Francisco HQ. Tuesday’s announcement that the company he founded back in 2002 with wife Susan Gregg Korger has reached $100 million in 2012 revenue makes another thing clear: the check-out button is closing in on ‘Like’ for number one.ModCloth’s commitment to a mobile-first, unabashedly social strategy is credited with getting them to the $100 million mark according to today’s press release. According to the founders nearly a third of their traffic is same-day repeat traffic, meaning they’ve visited the site more than once a day as a result of a roll-out of a slew of social features over the past 12 months. Among them: a virtual buyer program that allows users to vote samples into production and a style gallery of user-submitted photos that’s turned the e-commerce platform into its own internal social network. Since its launch last year more than 6,000 outfit photos have been shared through the site....

Rick Kahler: Collectibles Aren't Wise Retirement Investments | Financial Awakenings

Rick Kahler: Collectibles Aren't Wise Retirement Investments | Financial Awakenings | Consumption Junction | Scoop.it

Almost everyone has a story about a cousin or an aunt who bought a box of junk at an auction and found in it a diamond ring worth several hundred dollars. Every once in a while a valuable painting by a famous artist turns up in someone’s attic. “Antiques Roadshow” sometimes features odd items that have been sitting around in someone’s house for years and that are appraised for thousands of dollars.

This doesn’t mean buying and selling art or collectibles is a good way to make money.

Buying art, antiques, or collectibles is extremely speculative, in part because values are so subjective. What a given item is worth depends entirely on what a collector might be willing to pay at any given time. A piece of pottery or jewelry might fluctuate considerably in value as trends come and go. Yesterday’s hot collectible (think Beanie Babies or Jim Beam bottles) might be tomorrow’s overpriced embarrassment.

Does this mean you should never buy art or antiques in hopes that they’ll increase in value? Not necessarily. I am suggesting, though, that investment shouldn’t be the primary reason for your purchase.

Fashioning standards for industry conduct (Art & Antiques)

Fashioning standards for industry conduct (Art & Antiques) | Consumption Junction | Scoop.it

Doctors have the American Medical Association; lawyers are represented by the American Bar Association, car dealers, teachers, religions, and even countries have organized representation to promote their best interests to the public and government. Art and antiques dealers, one can categorically say, do not have any form of an umbrella organization that can advocate for its interests.

The many organizations that do attempt to be representatives of the industry are narrow in focus and small in membership. Whether it is the Art and Antiques Dealer’s League of America (AADLA), Antiques Dealers’ Association of American (ADA), National Antiques & Art Dealers Association of American (NAADAA), or the various state and local associations, they all have limited membership, finances, and interests. Individually they are just groups that attempt to create their own exclusivity of membership and can’t look at industry issues, be it a simple standard form of invoice or other business documents that have dealer and customer interests in mind; how about the larger purpose of the public’s image of dealers?

Repurposed retail trend attracts creative types, do-it-yourselfers

Repurposed retail trend attracts creative types, do-it-yourselfers | Consumption Junction | Scoop.it

Pinterest, the online bulletin board site that allows users to post pictures of their favorite things or creations, has spawned a new category in retail.

“Home decor” and “DIY and crafts” are among the most popular categories, with pinners posting pictures of decor and apparel items they have created from art supplies and found objects.

And these mini works of art are inspiring others, sending a growing legion of shoppers out looking for items to utilize in their own creations (think furniture pieces with great lines that will become magical with just the right paint technique, or vintage clothing ready to be transformed). Those without a crafty bent are searching for one-of-a-kind objects already created.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Many of us could point to altered artitst at flea markets and, online, at Etsy as proof of this "new category in retail" trend long before Pinterest but...

BMC can't act on lingerie mannequins inside shops | Consumption Junction | Scoop.it

MUMBAI: There is no provision in law which allows the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to tell shopkeepers not to put mannequins displaying lingerie inside their shops, said civic officials.

"Mannequins, regardless of what they are wearing, can be seized only if they are kept outside the shop on footpath for encroachment of public space. But there is no law or rule that empowers the BMC to regulate what a shopkeeper wants to exhibit inside his shop," a civic official told TOI on Wednesday.

Moms Stressed Out by Pinterest - 05/13/2013

While Pinterest might seem like a place for caring and sharing, the female-dominated social network is actually stressing a lot of users out, according to a Today.com survey of 7,000 U.S. mothers: in fact, 42% of respondents said they suffer from “Pinterest stress,” stemming from anxiety that they can’t live up to the ideal suggested by images of domestic perfection posted on the site....

"Of course, this phenomenon -- in which people carefully craft their online images to show themselves in the best possible light, and other people mistakenly assume this somehow corresponds to reality -- isn’t limited to Pinterest..."

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

"If you think about it, fashion may actually be THE industry that started the curation trend – we just didn’t know it at the time. How could we? “Curation” is a relatively new term, but it’s finding its way into other realms; you hear about content curation, music curation – all meaning that in some way, these industries are personalizing their offer according to your individual wants, needs and likes."

Farid Mheir's curator insight, April 26, 2013 6:18 PM

Absolutely a huge trend. Recent NRF show in NYC, curated commerce was very popular topic. Not only are brands and websites positioning themselves, newcomer companies are starting to prepare platforms to facilitate the creation of curated commerce. For example, Dell unveiled a special curated commerce project that will provide the platform for others to enable curated commerce on their website.

Lee Tonitto's curator insight, April 28, 2013 3:03 AM

Fashion SKU curation is the solution to reduce consumer anxiety: A search for ‘black dress’ in Clothing & Accessories on Amazon.com brings back 65,529 results! For consumers, this large number of choices can lead to confusion, exhaustion and dissatisfied purchases, or worse, no purchase at all."

Mr Branson's curator insight, May 8, 2013 5:15 AM

I believe, online consumers of all ages now want more than a shopping experience. They want price, place, promotion, people and ACTION. http://www.infogurushop.com Without the above they will simply continue to click, browse and surf away. What do you think?
