I love how a good graphic can cram in deep amounts of information in a pleasing "digestible" way and this one is no exception. This is one worth sharing when you're talking to teachers or administrators about your role in teaching digital literacy and how important it is.

Lucy Wyatt's curator insight, December 19, 2014 10:56 AM

This is a nice breakdown which delineates different ways to approach information in an accessible fashion,  These skills go hand in hand with the research process to make students generate new knowledge and opinions.

What is the Most Important Element of a PBL Unit?

What is the Most Important Element of a PBL Unit? | Consulting Teacher Resources | Scoop.it

What is the most important element in PBL unit? There are8 elements to choose from:

* Significant Content

* A Need to Know

* A Driving Question

* Student Voice and Choice

* 21st Century Skills

* Inquiry and Innovation

* Feedback and Revision

* Publicly Presented Product

This post states that a driving question is most important. "If you find the right questions then most of the other factors identified are covered automatically."

The question then becomes "How do you generate a great question and who is the right person to generate that question?" To this the answer would be the students.

If this is an area where you are not sure how to work with students then look into the the work of the Right Question Institute (RQI) and their Question Formation Technique (QFT). To help you better understand this they provide a look at "how question generation was embedded at the heart of a PBL unit."

Heather Hanson, a first-year teacher on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota, knew she was taking a risk when she showed a documentary called "Children of the Plains" to her speech class at Todd County High School. Narrated by Diane Sawyer, the 20/20 episode emphasizes poverty, alcoholism, and family dysfunction on the reservation. "I was offended," says Hanson, who is not Native American, "and it's not even about me. I wasn't sure how my students would react."

If you are a teacher in Grades K through 6 this site has a great resource...Common Core Checklists. You will find checklists for Reading, Writing, Language, Speaking & Listening, and Math.

The anchor standard is written at the top of the page. Underneath the indicator(s) will be listed in one column and you find columns for: date taught, date retaught, date reviewed, date assessed, date reassessed. All are uploaded as pdf files so you can easily download them for easy access. A screenshot of one page of Grade 3 ELA is in the image above.
