Will Gourley's insight:

This amount is nearly the budget size of a large school board (supporting over 120,000 students and 12,000 staff).  Will there be a longitudinal study to track the devastation that underfunded education is causing? I see some PhDs being earned in this field of study as a result.

Will Gourley's insight:

To grow as teachers we need to embrace educating the whole learner, we must broaden the scope of our work to include social learning, and well being into daily instruction. This article adds a 5th C to the 4Cs Model, Culture. If we build community into our classrooms we will be prepping students for a future of successful collaboration and citizenship. Failing to complement students with these skills will leave them emotionally, intellectually  and socially behind in the long run.

How does this issue compare to the existence of private vs. public school debates in other countries. Is there room for a free market in education? Does India risk a backlash from a their emerging and ever growing middle class?

Matt Miller's curator insight, February 26, 2014 12:34 PM

We can learn a lot as teachers from the Minecraft phenomenon. It's accessible. It's scalable. It requires self-direction. It's visual. It's open-ended. If we incorporated more of those features in our classrooms (and in education in general), imagine where we would go.

I wrote about my conversion from "Minecraft grinch" to supporter here: http://ditchthattextbook.com/2014/01/06/my-conversion-from-minecraft-grinch-to-supporter/ ;

Will Gourley's insight:

I wonder if it would be easier to teach someone to imagine  first and then create? Creativity is borne out of opportunity, encouragement and willingness to take chances, fail on occasion, get up and keep trying until success occurs. What is interesting is the lens by which success is examined in our society. There are many shades of success. They only depend on whether the beholder is equipped to creatively see the colours in between black and white.

If you set a reality show based on Canada's largest school board, you'd call it Trustees Gone Wild.
Will Gourley's insight:

I cannot help but shake my head when I hear about the ongoing gong show  performed by the current trustees of the TDSB. Here is an organization that asks its clients to work together, lead the way into the future and be good citizens. Yet, is incapable of achieving one, let alone all of these skills. Time for the students to lead so that the leaders may follow and learn how it's done.

How do we equip users of social media with better digital citizenship skills? Would you be able to say the things that you Tweet or post to the face of each person reading them? It is not okay to hurl insults from behind the protection of telepresent anonymity. Hate is hate regardless of the context. Teachers must equip students to edify use of social media and to avoid its shadowy destructive side.
