The conservation solutions to save the species are working - and, after years of decline, panda numbers are thought to be increasing.
mike v's insight:

-The conservation solutions to save the species are working-and, after years of decline, panda numbers are thought to be increasing.Panda habitat is increasing with the development of new reserves and green corridors.

-Some threats to panda survival such as poaching and illegal logging have been significantly reduced. Community development projects to help people sustainably coexist with pandas have been very positive.

-wild pandas have started to increase in numbers in some areas, even though they still are classified as a rare species.

-using a new method that analyzes DNA from panda droppings, scientists believe that the wild panda population may be as large as 3,000.

-Although the species is still endangered, it is thought that the conservation efforts are working. As of 2006, there were 40 panda reserves in China, compared to just 13 reserves two decades ago.

Ailuropoda melanoleuca (Giant Panda)

mike v's insight:

-A concerted effort has been made to increase both the quantity and quality of panda habitat.

-In addition to creating new reserves, China has worked to increase and improve forested area outside reserves.

-Additionally, a “Grain-to-Green” policy has forced farmers to abandon agricultural fields on steep slopes and replant these areas with trees (for which they are given grain and cash subsidies).

Threats to Pandas - Conservation International

Threats to Pandas - Conservation International | conservation on giant panda | Scoop.it
mike v's insight:

-The giant panda needs to feed off abundant bamboo understories to survive. Like many other large mammals, giant pandas have low reproductive rates and populations are slow to recover when animals are killed.

-There is great need for a thorough re-assessment of the status of pandas’ shrinking habitat, as well as in-depth study of the socio-economic factors behind these growing negative impacts.

The giant panda is the rarest member of the bear family and among the world’s most threatened animals. Learn about WWF's giant panda conservation efforts.
mike v's insight:

-Roads and railroads are increasingly fragmenting the forest, which isolates panda populations and prevents mating. Forest destruction also reduces pandas’ access to the bamboo they need to survive. \

Threats of Giant Panda

Threats of Giant Panda | conservation on giant panda | Scoop.it
mike v's insight:

-Development activities such as deforestation for agricultural land and logging are on going to cope with the ever increasing population of China. These activities are carried out at the expense of the habitat of the pandas, forcing them to move higher up the mountains and isolating them in to discrete groups.

-After flowering, the bamboo dies. If there is not another species of bamboo the pandas will eat in the same area or in a nearby area, these pandas face death due to starvation.

-Due to habitat degradation and destruction, bamboo forests are no longer large and uninterrupted. They are fragmented, separated by development and human settlement which prevent the pandas from roaming freely in search of different species of bamboo to feed in times of need.

Threats to giant pandas

Threats to giant pandas | conservation on giant panda | Scoop.it
Large-scale, destructive development, mining operations and mass tourism have all led to the widespread loss, degradation and fragmentation of panda habitat.
mike v's insight:

-Large-scale, destructive development, mining operations and mass tourism have all led to the widespread loss, degradation and fragmentation of panda habitat.

-there are now as few as 1,600 giant pandas left in the wild

-half of the giant panda’s habitat is not yet protected, and we may see the local extinction of small populations of pandas as they become isolated and cut-off from each other.
