Atul Gawande: How Do Good Ideas Spread?

Atul Gawande: How Do Good Ideas Spread? | Conservation On The Ground: Leadership, Partnerships, Communities, Capacity | Scoop.it
In the era of the iPhone, Facebook, and Twitter, we want frictionless, “turnkey” solutions to the major difficulties of the world. We prefer instructional videos to teachers, drones to troops, incentives to institutions.
Olivia Millard's insight:

Why do some innovations go viral, while others don't get any attention at all? "We yearn for frictionless, technological solutions. But people talking to people is still the way that norms and standards change."

Making Sense of Nonprofit Collaborations

Making Sense of Nonprofit Collaborations | Conservation On The Ground: Leadership, Partnerships, Communities, Capacity | Scoop.it

The Bridgespan Group, in collaboration with The Lodestar Foundation, surveyed 237 nonprofit CEOs and 101 foundation officers in 2014 on their participation in four common forms of formal collaboration.

Olivia Millard's insight:

Interesting results in Bridgespan's survey of nonprofit collaborations. "The study found three impediments to increasing collaboration that funders and nonprofits will need to address to make the most of the potential for collaboration:

Lack of funder support for collaboration: Nonprofits say they receive little support; funders say nonprofits don't ask.The difficulty of finding the right partner: Nonprofits rate this as their highest barrier, and grantmakers rate it their lowest. The downside of well-intentioned funder influence, particularly when it comes to joint programs: Nonprofits say joint programs have the highest failure rate, too often driven by funder requests; grantmakers say joint programs don't fail."

Harvesting Lessons (SSIR)

Harvesting Lessons (SSIR) | Conservation On The Ground: Leadership, Partnerships, Communities, Capacity | Scoop.it

A social enterprise that served farmers in Kenya had to close down, but it yielded a healthy crop of insights about failure. "As Thomas Edison said about the process of inventing the light bulb, 'I have not failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.' The only true failure, in other words, is the failure to learn."

Olivia Millard's insight:

Lessons learned once again about the importance of building relationships and trust when your objective is to change behavior.

The State of Network Evaluation – A Guide | Network Impact

The State of Network Evaluation – A Guide | Network Impact | Conservation On The Ground: Leadership, Partnerships, Communities, Capacity | Scoop.it

In response to increasing interest from grantmakers, network builders, and evaluators, Network Impact partnered with the Center for Evaluation Innovation (CEI) to develop a “state of the field” framing paper about network evaluation and an accompanying network evaluation casebook, as well as an interactive convening for funders to discuss practical questions about designing and funding network assessments. Supported by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Jim Joseph Foundation and The California Endowment, our three-pronged network evaluation project aimed to gather and share information with evaluators and leaders in the network development field about evaluation approaches, methodologies, and tools that are particularly suited to the assessment of networks.

Tools of Engagement | The Toolkit

Tools of Engagement | The Toolkit | Conservation On The Ground: Leadership, Partnerships, Communities, Capacity | Scoop.it

This toolkit is the collective effort of a dedicated group of colleagues working in conservation. What brought us together was a common interest in the connection between people and conservation—specifically how we can better engage people to achieve more sustainable conservation results. We wanted to better understand what motivates people to take action and how to engage diverse stakeholders. We also wanted to focus on how to keep people's interests in mind as we deliver conservation programs and ensure that we're linking environmental protection with improving the quality of people's lives.

Olivia Millard's insight:

Looks like a really useful toolkit for anyone thinking about how to integrate people into conservation planning.

Chronic underinvestment is placing increasing demands on social-sector leaders in the US. New research suggests ways they can meet the leadership challenge. A McKinsey & Company article.

Olivia Millard's insight:

It's a classic challenge in capacity building outside the US - often when a good leader leaves, his or her organization's effectiveness declines because there isn't a good succession plan or sufficient bench strength. (nb bench strength is a western sports term, not understood in many cultures). Now we're seeing this in the US, too.
