Atul Gawande: How Do Good Ideas Spread? | Conservation On The Ground: Leadership, Partnerships, Communities, Capacity | Scoop.it
In the era of the iPhone, Facebook, and Twitter, we want frictionless, “turnkey” solutions to the major difficulties of the world. We prefer instructional videos to teachers, drones to troops, incentives to institutions.
Olivia Millard's insight:

Why do some innovations go viral, while others don't get any attention at all? "We yearn for frictionless, technological solutions. But people talking to people is still the way that norms and standards change."

The Confidence Gap

The Confidence Gap | Conservation On The Ground: Leadership, Partnerships, Communities, Capacity | Scoop.it
Evidence shows that women are less self-assured than men—and that to succeed, confidence matters as much as competence. Here's why, and what to do about it.
Olivia Millard's insight:

This is such a good article - really, everyone should read it. "in study after study, the data confirm what we instinctively know. Underqualified and underprepared men don’t think twice about leaning in. Overqualified and overprepared, too many women still hold back. Women feel confident only when they are perfect. Or practically perfect."

Answers to Your Transformative Scale Questions

Answers to Your Transformative Scale Questions | Conservation On The Ground: Leadership, Partnerships, Communities, Capacity | Scoop.it
The transformative scale webinar hosted by Stanford Social Innovation Review on April 29 came to a close before BRAC's Susan Davis, Year Up's Gerald Chertavian, and Bridgespan's Jeff Bradach could answer all the participants' questions. Here, Bradach and Bridgespan Consultant Abe Grindle answer several of the more broadly applicable questions.
Olivia Millard's insight:

Follow up to last week's SSIR webinar on scaling up. Lots of good food for thought here. How does a nonprofit scale up without funds to invest in infrastructure? How do you explain partner-based impact to funders? If a nonprofit can significantly grow its revenue and size by positioning itself as the exclusive provider of a highly effective new service, does that come at the expense of pursuing the best path to maximize impact for the world?

How Social Intranets Can Help Support Legal Knowledge Management

How Social Intranets Can Help Support Legal Knowledge Management | Conservation On The Ground: Leadership, Partnerships, Communities, Capacity | Scoop.it

If we can contemplate the function of knowledge management within organizations as supporting effective decision making, creating the conditions for innovation, and communicating “more than we know” to our colleagues, then how might social intranets help afford and support this function?

Olivia Millard's insight:

I really like this blog post; it's got something for everyone. From the theoretical ("knowledge exists across three different axes") to the practical ("social intranets help get us closer to 'what we know' through less formal means of expression), to a more nuanced framework for KM that goes beyond the tacit/explicit dichotomy.

The discussion will draw on findings contained in the 2012 World Bank Policy Research Report: Localising development: does participation work?’, examining community development and decentralisation projects around the world, which finds that such projects often fail to be sensitive to complex contexts and that they are not a substitute for weak central states.

The event takes place on 9 June 2014 13:00-14:30 GMT+01 and will be streamed live.

Excessive demands are leading to burnout everywhere.
Olivia Millard's insight:

Thoughtful analysis of the core needs of employees (including top leadership) that, if met, lead to higher organizational performance. And, ideas for how to meet them. For example: "The energy of leaders is, for better or worse, contagious. When leaders explicitly encourage employees to work in more sustainable ways — and especially when they themselves model a sustainable way of working — their employees are 55 percent more engaged, 53 percent more focused, and more likely to stay at the company, our research with the Harvard Business Review found."

Via Capacity.org
Olivia Millard's insight:

This looks like it could be really useful! Stories are often the best way to help others (decision-makers and donors, for instance) understand the value of things like learning networks. But how do we make those stories resonate for skeptics, and for those who are focused on the bottom line?

Capacity.org's curator insight, February 18, 2:50 AM

Stories are not often considered to offer robust evidence of impact of a development evaluation. This new tool aims to provide guidance for developing rigorous "impact stories" that could be used as part of an evaluation. The methodology guides project participants through the process of sharing "examples of changes in skills, knowledge, attitudes, motivations, individual behaviors or organizational practice."
A link to the full paper introducing the methodology, co-authored by B. WIlliams and T. Chilaika, is also provided.
