Tips for Increasing Engagement in Online Learning

Tips for Increasing Engagement in Online Learning | Connected Learning | Scoop.it

"Often times, tips for engaging learners in corporate online learning include external features and novel delivery methods. These range from using animations, “real-life” scenarios, game-design, leaderboards, and badges. But with learners actually spending more time learning and developing themselves outside of the corporate learning infrastructure, knowing what is appealing for them could have us directing our efforts and attention in a more focused approach that leads to greater engagement, activity and—more importantly—results.

Here are some tips based on learner preferences that could give you the results that you are seeking."

The face of education is steadily changing. Where it was once restricted to only the classroom or the odd homeschooling instance, the classroom has officially expanded its borders and has not only entered the age of the internet, but has brought new opportunities to students who would have otherwise gone without or experienced substandard education…

5 Features That Define the Next Generation Social LMS

5 Features That Define the Next Generation Social LMS | Connected Learning | Scoop.it

"Social learning has been in existence for ages now. Inherently, man’s basic desire is to observe, learn, and share. Today, social learning is more defined to the extent of being perceived as a formal concept. Leveraging the existing social learning platforms has promoted the culture of learning. Hence, the future of social learning at the workplace lies in continuous social communication and collaboration via personal and technology-enabled methods. A Learning Management System (LMS) can achieve desired results if it has the following five features:"

If you are an online k-12 teacher, or hope to be one: READ this article.

Reporter Darren Samulesohn provides a non-partisan overview of k-12 virtual schooling.  This is a refreshingly in depth story about the recent history of k-12 online schools. You'll also get a good sense of current political, economic and educational realities in this booming field.

There are a number of researchers who would contest the claim that "Nobody knows how well it works".  But it is more than clear that the results are mixed and far from complete.

The Art Of Giving Feedback In eLearning | LEARNing To LEARN

The Art Of Giving Feedback In eLearning | LEARNing To LEARN | Connected Learning | Scoop.it
When using advanced eLearning authoring tools we are sometimes tempted to follow a mechanistic approach to designing feedback. It is easy to use templates or just to copy and paste automatic feedback comments in quizzes.

However, we should remember that proper feedback can be a very influential mechanism with an ability to improve people’s competencies. To use the full power and potential of feedback in eLearning we need to spend much more time on designing it and just forget about doing simplified work on it.

Ways to Use Video Conferencing in the Classroom - Teachers With Apps

Ways to Use Video Conferencing in the Classroom - Teachers With Apps | Connected Learning | Scoop.it
Video conferencing is a wonderful technology that has helped change the way both business and personal communication is conducted. It not only provides a more personal, intimate way to communicate compared to a phone call, but thanks to additional services like document sharing and multi-point capabilities, the technology is by far the most effective and productive way to conduct important meetings outside of actually being face-to-face. But its effectiveness is so close to what a face-to-face meeting can give that it completely negates the need to travel to any sort of in-person meeting. Video conferencing isn’t just a useful tool for businesses and personal use, it’s also a wonderful tool teachers can use to enhance a student’s learning experience in the classroom, whether that classroom is in an elementary school, middle school, high school, or university.

5 Ideas that Make your E-learning Course Relevant | Connected Learning | Scoop.it

"

If you are aiming at creating an effective and engaging course, you need to focus on one main aspect: Relevance. Prior to developing the online course, you need to ask yourself whether the course is relevant to your learners. Does the course offer what learners are looking for? Right from designing the GUI to presenting the content, every element you include should address the issue of relevancy."

6 Design Principles Of Connected Learning

6 Design Principles Of Connected Learning | Connected Learning | Scoop.it

What is possible in a learning environment today? One idea you  might want to explore is Connected Learning.  "CLA is on our short list of thought leaders that help push us to think about how education is changing in a modern world, which is why we’ve shared some of their models in the past, including their iconic Connected Learning model. Recently, we also discovered that they’ve shared the design principles of that model, along with a description of each."

Beth Dichter's curator insight, December 28, 2014 9:41 PM

Connected Learning looks at digital technology and how we can use it to aide our learners. The image above shows their learning principles and design principles. There are three of each.

Learning Principles:

* Interest Powered

* Peer-Supported

* Academically Oriented

Design Principles:

* Production-Centered

* Openly  Networked

* Shared Purpose

Connected Learning provides opportunities for students "to experience learning that is social, participatory, interest-driven and relevant to the opportunities of our time."
