Digital Age Skills for Educators | Educator Innovator ~ by An-Me Chung

Digital Age Skills for Educators | Educator Innovator ~ by An-Me Chung | K-12 Connected Learning | Scoop.it
Mozilla has recently kicked off two exciting new planning projects to help in- and out-of-school educators identify and teach digital-age skills, and to prototype badges with clear learning and achievement outcomes related to those skills. Mozilla is working with an advisory group drawn from the Mozilla community, industry, higher education, policymakers, and others to ensure the content and evidence is grounded in real-world application. Finally, Mozilla is making sure to document lessons learned for broader reach and information back to interested stakeholders.

The Leveraging Linked Learning and Career-ready Badges project, funded by the Irvine Foundation, will create and prototype digital badges with Linked Learning educators in California. The Afterschool, Digital Age Skills Badges and Competency-based Learning project, funded by the Mott Foundation, will also create a set of digital badges for prototyping and piloting, as well as to influence policymakers on the important role of afterschool programs in supporting and supplementing learning.

The Struggles and Realities of Student-Driven Learning and BYOD

The Struggles and Realities of Student-Driven Learning and BYOD | K-12 Connected Learning | Scoop.it
The promise of technology in the classroom has long been equal access to resources on the internet, but a digital divide still exists largely because of the other issues poverty raises in schools.
Al Post's insight:

"Technology" is not a "silver bullet" and simply allowing students to bring their own devices without an overarching plan/vision will not help to increase equity for all learners. BYOD, Personalized Learning, Flipped Classes and other strategies sound great and have a wide appeal, but we need to constantly remind ourselves (and find creative new strategies) of the realities that poverty and culture place upon many of our families (and students).

15 Lesson Plans For Making Students Better Online Researchers ~ Global Digital Citizen Foundation

15 Lesson Plans For Making Students Better Online Researchers ~ Global Digital Citizen Foundation | K-12 Connected Learning | Scoop.it

"Google is usually one of the first places students turn to when tasked with an assignment. Whether it’s for research, real-time results, or just a little digital exploration … it’s important they know how to properly Google. Lucky for teachers (and students, of course), Google has a handy set of lesson plans that are just waiting to be unleashed upon the leaders of tomorrow.

"While I understand there’s a LOT more to research than just Googling, it’s important to note that this is where nearly all students start their research. Therefore, it’s a critical skill if they’re going to start down the right paths.

"Below are 15 lesson plans courtesy of Google designed to make students better online researchers. They’re organized by difficulty and meant to help students (and everyone) become better online searchers."

Excellent lessons. Must be used.

Deborah Fillman's curator insight, December 15, 2014 8:47 PM

This is a pet peeve of mine--schools are still not teaching kids how to do this properly, with disastrous results. Whether you homeschool or send a child to school, these lessons will help them use the Internet more effectively (and responsibly) for research projects.

I have not read all of this, but I have seen some ideas in here we could use in both our face to face and online teaching. Interesting to read the criteria Google use to evaluate resources

Schools in Finland will no longer teach 'subjects' | EDUcation CHANGE | Teaching by Topic

Schools in Finland will no longer teach 'subjects' | EDUcation CHANGE | Teaching by Topic | K-12 Connected Learning | Scoop.it

For years, Finland has been the by-word for a successful education system, perched at the top of international league tables for literacy and numeracy.

.

Pasi Silander, the city’s development manager, explained: “What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life.

.

“Young people use quite advanced computers. In the past the banks had lots of  bank clerks totting up figures but now that has totally changed.

.

“We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society.”

.

Subject-specific lessons – an hour of history in the morning, an hour of geography in the afternoon – are already being phased out for 16-year-olds in the city’s upper schools. They are being replaced by what the Finns call “phenomenon” teaching – or teaching by topic. For instance, a teenager studying a vocational course might take “cafeteria services” lessons, which would include elements of maths, languages (to help serve foreign customers), writing skills and communication skills.

.

More academic pupils would be taught cross-subject topics such as the European Union - which would merge elements of economics, history (of the countries involved), languages and geography.

.

This is what school librarians have been doing forever!

María Florencia Perrone's curator insight, April 8, 4:00 PM

The world around us is not labelled or divided in categories, then why is academic content? Can we not relate topics and elaborate meaning on the basis of relationships and intertwined data?

Helen Teague's curator insight, April 13, 9:11 PM

I wonder if this would work in the U.S.? Also, in Finland, students do not take standardized tests until the end of high school (Zhao, 2012, p. 111), so thankfully, perhaps the drill and kill process is diminished.

17 Fantastic Infographic Generators!

17 Fantastic Infographic Generators! | K-12 Connected Learning | Scoop.it

Data is crucial. However, displaying a chunk of plain data can be monotonous. Infographics visualize plain data and make it visually more appealing. Data turned into infographic has a higher potential to go viral and be effective. While many of us are designers who can design amazing infographs, Infographic Generators can come in handy to Designers and non-designers alike. They can be a time saving resource. So here is a list of 17 fantastic Infographic Generators I compiled together:...
