Learning should be considered as more than just a one-size-fits-all “journey.” For all learners, this journey should be highly unique and individualized. Another way to envision such individualized learning within an educational model is to consider the common structure of hiking trail systems. In this analogy we can envision the traditional approach and most new technology solutions as if every single learner was a hiker climbing the exact same trail up a mountain. As described above, this would mean that all learners/hikers would climb the exact same trail regardless of their personal hiking knowledge, experience, and skill levels.
In the dual worlds where I live - part Montessori mom and part education innovation advocate - it’s been really exhilarating to see these worlds begin to collide.
Stephanie Sandifer's insight:
I could have written this... no really, I could have... but I didn't and I completely agree with everything she says about Montessori and where we need to be heading in terms of designing learning environments/experiences.
