What Is Net Neutrality and Why Should Educators Care That It’s In Danger?

What Is Net Neutrality and Why Should Educators Care That It’s In Danger? | Connected Learning | Scoop.it

The chances are good that you’re reading this article by way of an Internet connection. A link was clicked, and your browser connected to a series of networks to bring you the bits and bites of information to render on your screen. That, in simple terms, is how the Internet works. Aside from what kind of connection you use to access the Internet, you’ve likely never needed to think more about how you get information.

A possible overhaul of something called net neutrality could change all of that. A federal appeals court decision in January struck down the Federal Communication Commission’s rules regarding net neutrality, saying the FCC overstepped its authority by regulating a free and open net.

Net neutrality gives us equal access – Glenn Moses

This may seem far afield from the world of education, but according to Online Principal Glenn Moses, that’s part of the problem.

“People aren’t going to become aware of it until it’s already happened,” says Moses, principal of Jeffco’s 21st Century Virtual Academy in Jefferson County, Colorado.

#Edcamp & Voice – 10 Suggestions for Participating | Change Agency

#Edcamp & Voice – 10 Suggestions for Participating | Change Agency | Connected Learning | Scoop.it

Yesterday we wrapped up a very successful second annualEdcamp Houston conference.  As we learned last year and from the experiences of other edcamp organizers, it is so critical to ensure that the conference is as “unconference” as possible and that everyone in attendance has the opportunity to share their “voice” if they choose to do so.

One of the challenges with this goal is that edcamps tend to attract many of the edtech “rockstars” who are very active online and offline in sharing their skills, knowledge, and expertise with others.  Many are experienced conference presenters and nearly all are not at all shy about sharing their “voice” in a discussion on various education topics.

However, voice — everyone’s voice — really is a critical component at edcamp.
