The brainy questions on Finland’s only high-stakes standardized test

The brainy questions on Finland’s only high-stakes standardized test | Connected Learning | Scoop.it
Now here's a really serious college readiness exam.
Stephanie Sandifer's insight:

Statements in this article that caught my attention:

"...students are primarily assessed by multiple teacher-made tests that vary from one school to another...

...At the national level sample-based student assessments similar to the National Assessment of Educational Progress that have no stakes for students, teachers, or schools are the main means to inform policy-makers and the public on how Finland’s school system is performing...

...This customized school system that attempts to meet local and individual needs is a poor host for external inspections and standardized tests. The only external standardized test in Finland is the national Matriculation Examination, a high-stakes exam that determines college readiness and which all students are required to pass in order to graduate high school exit and  enter university...

...Most Finns, including students and teachers, are happy with one examination given at the end of high school rather than more frequent tests and the side-effects that often come with them during the course of schooling...

What is the structure of this exam and what does it measure?  First, students must take at least four individual tests in order to be awarded the Matriculation Examination certificate. An exam assessing students’ competencies of mother tongue (Finnish, Swedish or Saami) is compulsory for everybody. Second, each student chooses three further tests from the following pool: second domestic language (e.g. Swedish), foreign language (most often English), mathematics, and one test from the humanities and sciences category. Additionally, students may add optional exams in the following subjects: various foreign languages, history, civics, biology, geography, physics, chemistry, health education, psychology, philosophy, ethics, and religious studies...

...The mathematics exam consists of 15 problems of which student can choose no more than ten..."

Just some interesting things to ponder and to compare against the system of testing that has been adopted here in the United States.

Membership Workspace for Artists/Creatives to Open in Houston

Membership Workspace for Artists/Creatives to Open in Houston | Connected Learning | Scoop.it
Stephanie Sandifer's insight:

"A scenario such as this is why some clever folks in Houston have developed an art-gear mecca called Houston Makerspace, which opens this Saturday, April 12, with much fanfare, after which time “Houstonians will have access to an unparalleled arena of workspace offerings including a wood shop, metal shop, rapid prototyping lab (read: laser cutters and 3D printers!), screen printing studio, letterpress shop, jewelry studio, and sewing and textiles lab.” They’ve also got the fittings for ceramics, glassblowing, and blacksmithing, and are beginning to build-out a 10,000 square foot community garden. Also, classrooms and studio space will be available, because seriously, you may just want to be there always, chatting at the coffeemaker with all the other types like you who need coffee a lot, pretending you’re in school again."

To Advance Education, We Must First Reimagine Society

To Advance Education, We Must First Reimagine Society | Connected Learning | Scoop.it
Why haven't education reform efforts amounted to much? Because they start with the wrong problem, says John Abbott, director of the 21st Century Learning Initiative. Overhauling the educational paradigm means replacing the metaphor — the concept of the world and its inhabitants as machine-like entities — that has shaped the education system, as well as many other aspects of our culture.
