Growth mindset should be a philosophy in teaching and learning. Does it replace pedagogy? I don't think so, but I think they work together. Max van Manen's work in the area of thoughtful pedagogy fits well with growth mindset.

Working with learners of low SES and whose environment more often than not ensures they have a fixed mindset, it is important that we help them to redefine what success is. Too often it is fixed around being rich, having a big car, house, jewellery etc. These learners then become preoccupied with looking for the short-cut to success, to the riches they believe will make them happy. It doesn't work out like that of course. How then to help the alter their thinking? 


Dweck's work is essential in this. But as this article states it cannot be seen as "a task to complete".  It requires a shift in thinking of all in an organisation, a movement for a whole-school way of thinking, involving also parents or carers.  This article by Costa, Garmston and Zimmerman provides a solid basis for promoting growth mindsets in educators.

The list is totally focused on digital technologies. I think clouds are a good thing from a poetic perspective. They are helpful when it comes to saving my work, as well. We have too many people and teachers who think that clouds are instrumental and digital only.

This concept and the visual was taken from my new book which came out today called, The Future of Work: Attract New Talent, Build Better Leaders, and Create a Competitive Organization.

 

One of the things I have been writing about and have tried to make clear over the past few months is that work as we know it is dead and that the only way forward is to challenge convention around how we work, how we lead, and how we build our companies. Employees which were once thought of expendable cogs are the most valuable asset that any organization has. However, the employee from a decade ago isn’t the same as the employee who we are starting to see today. To help show that I wanted to share an image from my upcoming book which depicts how employees are evolving. It’s an easy way to see the past vs the future.

An art teacher and I (drama teacher) started to use a negotiated approach with students about 15 years ago.  By working with students to be aware of curriculum expectations and discussing "what would this look like" we assisted students with developingntheir own learnign pathways and expressions of their learning - in keeping with the legislated requirements of curriculum.  I've also noted over the years that elements of the International Baccalaureate - particularly the project work from MYP - reflects a similar approach.

Without reference to research literature, I'd speculate that this speaks to engagement, authenticity and relevance... and needn't be confined to K-12 contexts.... well-documented project work could be conducted outside the confines of formal classes and evidenced against formal assessment criteria.

Whether you’re selling a product, pitching an idea, or trying to get employees to do something different or do something in a different way, perspective-taking has become an essential element in moving others.

 

Over the last decade, social scientists like Adam Galinsky of Columbia University have deepened our understanding of perspective-taking. Their work yields three ways leaders can become more effective.

 

1. CHECK YOUR POWER. Galinsky and others have found that when people feel powerful, their perspective-taking abilities degrade. The more powerful we feel, the more we anchor in our own perspective rather than adjusting to another’s. And that can make others less likely to go along. But briefly reducing one’s feelings of power (“Maybe this employee I’m asking to do something needs our company much less than our company needs her.”) can increase the acuity of our perspective-taking, which in turn can make us more effective.

 

2. PERSPECTIVE-TAKING ISN’T TOUCHY-FEELY. Perspective-taking sounds a lot like empathy, but the two qualities are siblings, not identical twins. Empathy — the ability to understand another’s emotional state — is an essential human quality. But research has shown that, in commercial settings such as negotiations, understanding the other side’s thoughts and interests, not simply their emotions and feelings, can be more effective in forging a deal. So if you’re in a high-stakes leadership situation, definitely be emotionally intelligent. But use your head as much as your heart.


3. DON’T FORGET MIMICRY. Mimicking others’ posture, gesture, and expressions sounds like the sleazy tactics of a used car salesman. But ample research has shown that mimicry is a natural part of human behavior, an instinctive way we understand others. You can enhance your attunement skills, and thereby your leadership, simply by being conscious of how the other person is standing, moving, and talking and ever so slightly mirroring what they’re doing.

"It often seems that gifted children are more…emotional, physical, spiritual, etc. requiring more energy from parents.

 

Below are some common social/emotional struggles faced by gifted children:

 

- Gifted preschoolers have disproportional development between their motor skills and their conceptual abilities. They may want to copy something they have seen or create something they are imagining and yet their fine motor skills are not able to perform adequately to enable them meet that goal. Consequently, they become emotionally upset, and the volcano erupts.

 

- Perfectionism is an on-going problem with gifted individuals, including preschoolers that want their product to look like their picture or idea. Their unrealistic self expectations may insure that they will feel inadequate and discouraged.

 

- Their struggles may intensify when they become overly cautious, as they see all the possible dilemmas and difficulties with activities. They may avoid trying something new. Coping with a tendency to bind up when facing new challenges can become a life-long frustration in decision-making.

 

- In peer relationships, often the gifted children find that they are more comfortable with older children and not so much with those of their own chronological age.

Many gifted children experience what is called “hypersensitivity”. They may be overly sensitive to the emotions of others and may overreact to peer and family issues causing conflicts. They may also be extra sensitive to the environment including noise, light, or confusion, sometimes causing difficulty in social settings"

Being critical is often misinterpreted as being negative. 'Reflection' is also frequently distorted to mean "reflect on what you are doing wrong". Too often the students that we teach give negative feedback when asked to be critical. So to counter act this, educators initiate strategies such as '2 stars and a wish' and SWNI (strengths, weaknesses, new ideas).
These strategies are designed to make reflective practices a more positive experience for students. It teaches them that being critically reflective is not just a negative activity, that it is important to be positive and give feedback to help improve or make something better.
