Jackie GERSTEIN: I absolutely love planning lessons from scratch.  I just got a job teaching technology units for a summer camp for elementary age students. I can design and teach whatever I want – planning for a different theme each week. Some of the themes I am planning are: Expanding and Showing Your Personal Interests Through Blogging, Photos, and Videos; Coding and Creating Online Games; Tinkering and Making – Simple Robotics; Hacking Your Notebook; and Creating Online Comics, Newspapers, and Magazines.  I have begun the process of planning these classes through reflecting on what the lessons will look like.

emotional intelligence, which evaluates how well individuals perceive and deal with affectively charged interpersonal situations. But there are situations in which leaders have to deal with the emotions of large groups of people, not just those of one or a few individuals and most managers don’t have time to operate on a one-on-one basis all the time. Understanding the collective can help leaders respond effectively to the group as a whole. This happens in situations such as dealing with the collective anxiety of executives facing the news of corporate restructuring; or public authorities dealing with the collective anger of large groups of people in the streets; or politicians seeking to inspire large groups of people to win an election. Those with the skill to pick up on the subtle emotional cues of the collective can adapt accordingly and, according to our research, earn more respect as a result. So how can this ability to see the forest for the trees be applied by leaders?

BUT WHAT PRICE DID PHAROAH PAY FOR TAKING ADVICE FROM A VOICE OF A MAN THAT COULD CARE LESS. HE RESENDED HIS WORD AND SENT HIS OFFICERS TO BRING THE ISREALITES BACK INTO  CAPTIVES AGAIN AS SLAVES AFTER HE FREED THEM. IN THE PROCESS OF DOING SO ALL THE OFFICERS  THE GREAT PHAROAH SENT OUT DIED IN BATTLE SO TO SPEAK. THAT IS WHY OBEDIENCE TO GOD IS IMPORTANT! THE ONES THAT LEADERS LEAD AND KNOW THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO AND ITS ONLY ABOUT THE DOLLAR AND THEY COULD CARE LESS NOW THAT TAKES NO EMOTIONS AND EVEN JESUS SHOWED EMOTION TRUE HE NEVER SAID A MUMBLING WORD DURING HIS LEADERSHIP PROCESS OF GIVING HIS LIFE BECAUSE NO MN TOOK IT BUT WE OFTEN FORGET THE JESUS WEPT! HE CRIED FOR NO WRONG HE HAD DONE BUT BECAUSE HE TOOK ALL OF OURS AND PLACED IT UPON HIMSELF VOLUNTARILY BECAUSE HE DID NOT HAVE TO BUT CHOSE TO DO SO IN OBEDIENCE TO GOD NOW THATS LEADERSHIP WITH EMOTION THAT RESOLVED THE GREATEST PROBLEM THERE EVER WILL BE.  THANK YOU JESUS!

I'm not going to encourage anyone not to give attribution or credit for the images - however always useful to have good sources of free to use images.  Important that students learn that the pictures they find and want to include in presentations have to be sourced and cited appropriately.

And since then, plenty more forward-thinking learning professionals have recognised the value of Twitter for their own professional learning – with Twitter rising to the top of the Top 100 Tools for Learning in 2008 and staying in that position for the last 6 years.

Now, of course Twitter has become mainstream, brands and celebrities have their own Twitter accounts to promote themselves, there are live chats every day on all kinds of topics  – with even TV programmes holding their own live chats. But just like with any society, it has unfortunately meant a darker side of Twitter has emerged too.

Nevertheless, Twitter is still the most important place for me to find out what is going on in the world, but I can understand how newcomers today might be daunted at the prospective of joining up. Most of the press would have them believe it’s just a place for finding out what their colleagues had for breakfast, or what their favourite celebrity is wearing today, but it has does have clear professional value too.

Tout à fait d'accord, Twitter est aujourd'hui l'outil numéro 1 pour l’apprentissage. Il faut le combiner avec Flipboard pour facilement lire l'info contenue dans les liens qui sont tweeté.

Coaching is a difference-maker in education.  Think of the mindset evident in high-performing athletic teams, chess teams, even actors and other entertainers. Content providers are valuable, but that is not what makes learning organizations distinct, especially not those that seek to reach and provide a high-quality education to a full spectrum of learners.

The same thing is true as we continue to implement things like competency-based education models. Many celebrate the way CBE can reduce the cost of college degrees, increasing access and opportunity, and addressing critical workforce needs. However, if cost reduction happens at the expense of great coaching and mentoring, I am concerned that we will make little progress in the democratization of education.

The “haves and have nots” of education depend largely upon the prerequisite skills needed to take advantage of newer and emerging learning environments ranging from CBE to MOOCs, self-directed learning to self-organized learning environments....

I'm not going to encourage anyone not to give attribution or credit for the images - however always useful to have good sources of free to use images.  Important that students learn that the pictures they find and want to include in presentations have to be sourced and cited appropriately.

Creativity is about fresh thinking. It doesn’t have to be new to the whole of humanity— though that’s always a bonus— but certainly to the person whose work it is. Creativity also involves making critical judgments about whether what you’re working on is any good, be it a theorem, a design, or a poem. Creative work often passes through typical phases. Sometimes what you end up with is not what you had in mind when you started. It’s a dynamic process that often involves making new connections, crossing disciplines, and using metaphors and analogies.

Being creative is not just about having off-the-wall ideas and letting your imagination run free. It may involve all of that, but it also involves refining, testing, and focusing what you’re doing. It’s about original thinking on the part of the individual, and it’s also about judging critically whether the work in process is taking the right shape and is worthwhile, at least for the person producing it.

The educator becomes a connected educator and through sharing, is an active participant and contributor to the connected educator movement.

Being a connected educator means connecting with other teachers to exchange ideas, improve your teaching practice, and in turn, make a change in education. It is only through being connected that we can collaborate and help to foster learning for the 21st century and beyond. (Being a Connected Educator)

The gap between what is and what could be in education is larger than it ever has  been.  I believe this is largely due to technology and the ability to establish global connections because of social media. Educators are more connected and more aware about education trends than any time in the history of public education.

Imagine how education could be transformed if all educators use their own personal, often passion-driven voices. The bottom line is that if any individual educator believes there are flaws in the education, that it can be done better, then s/he has the responsibility to say something. I reaching the point that I am starting to believe it is a moral imperative for educators to share what they know to be true with other educators; and with administrators, students’ families, community members, politicians . . . the larger global society.

For years, Finland has been the by-word for a successful education system, perched at the top of international league tables for literacy and numeracy.

Pasi Silander, the city’s development manager, explained: “What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life.

.

“Young people use quite advanced computers. In the past the banks had lots of  bank clerks totting up figures but now that has totally changed.

.

“We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society.”

.

Subject-specific lessons – an hour of history in the morning, an hour of geography in the afternoon – are already being phased out for 16-year-olds in the city’s upper schools. They are being replaced by what the Finns call “phenomenon” teaching – or teaching by topic. For instance, a teenager studying a vocational course might take “cafeteria services” lessons, which would include elements of maths, languages (to help serve foreign customers), writing skills and communication skills.

.

More academic pupils would be taught cross-subject topics such as the European Union - which would merge elements of economics, history (of the countries involved), languages and geography.

I wonder if this would work in the U.S.? Also, in Finland, students do not take standardized tests until the end of high school (Zhao, 2012, p. 111), so thankfully, perhaps the drill and kill process is diminished.

If I ask you or your students, "How do you learn," how many of you could clearly articulate this process? If you can, are the strategies you're using the best ones for learning? 

 

Apply New Learning Often and in Meaningful Contexts


The more you can apply what you’re learning to your every day, the more it’ll stick in your head. The reason is simple. When you’re learning by doing, you’re implementing everything that makes our memory work. When you’re able to connect what you’re learning with a real world task, that forms the bonds in your brain, and subsequently the skills you’re learning will stick around.


We learn best when we have context, and that applies to new skills as much as it does random facts in school. That’s why something like the transfer of learning is helpful when your learning a new skill. This means you’re applying your new skills in your day to day life in a context that matters.
