Updated Personalization vs. Differentiation vs. Individualization Chart Version 3 | Enrjtk Educatr | Scoop.it

From your feedback, we revised the chart so assessment AS, OF, and FOR learning was clarified for each of the terms. 


Individualization involves assessment OF learning. This is where summative assessment is grade-based and involves testing to confirm what learners know and do not know.

 

Differentiation involves assessment FOR learning and OF learning. This is assessment that involves time-based testing where teachers provide feedback to advance learning.

 

Personalization involves assessment AS learning, FOR learning, and a minimal OF learning. This is where teachers develop capacity so learners become independent learners who set goals, monitor progress, and reflect on learning. Assessments are based on mastery.

Ben shared the curriculum that is experiential, learner-focused and based on these 7 MS competencies:

 

>> Self-Assessor: in health, mind, spirituality and organization

>>  Contributor: through empathy and understanding; making a difference to the surrounding world

>> Creator: being an innovator, designer and maker of new things

>> Communicator: with compassion through oral, written, visual, musical, non-verbal and dance.

>> Collaborator: team member, leading and negotiating, sharing

>> Explorer: showing curiosity, taking risks and experimenting

>> Thinker: creative, critical, analytical, broad minded

 

They came up with the 3 Big Ideas last year. For one week three times during the year, there are themes where learners self-direct their learning.

Teachers need to recast themselves as learners alongside students. The days of the expert are behind us despite the advent of TED talks and other media where we still seem to think the sage on the stage is the way to impart knowledge, wisdom, and truth. There are moments for that, but learning is very relational, contingent, contextual, and personal.

Quite of few of the examples are famliar, but the point being that depending on the culture, the values, the worldview, etc. what it means to be educated, and how one goes about learning, can be vastly different.
