Globally Competitive Does Not Mean Globally Competent

Globally Competitive Does Not Mean Globally Competent | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

... It seems that perhaps national security just might shake up things in education so that we may begin to properly prepare our workforce for the future. On Monday, the Senate Homeland Security Subcommittee held a hearing on Federal Government Foreign Language Skills by Senator Akaka. The two-hour hearing was alarming to listen to: The FBI, the Departments of Defense, State, Education and Homeland Security, and a variety of experts including foreign language teachers and the Institute of International Education all agreed that we do not have enough foreign language speakers now nor in the pipeline to meet our national security needs, which includes economic stability in an increasing global marketplace. Expert after expert testified to the benefits and the long-term solutions for this is not an overnight shift. Learning a second language and embracing an international education -- one that teaches all subjects through a global lens -- will take a fresh start, beginning as early as Kindergarten.

Experts & NewBIEs | Bloggers on Project Based Learning: What Should Global PBL Look Like?

Experts & NewBIEs | Bloggers on Project Based Learning: What Should Global PBL Look Like? | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Another thing about how it was twenty years ago – global education was mainly about bringing the world into your classroom. You might have invited a guest speaker from another country, shown videos about other cultures, or maybe established a pen-pals relationship with another school across the globe. And all too often, global education meant doing what the Buck Institute for Education (BIE) calls a “dessert” project: an activity you offered students after you covered the content first. Today, Global PBL can be a much richer and rigorous “main course.”

Bangladesh Exchange Alumni Reunite in California - Blog - World Savvy

Bangladesh Exchange Alumni Reunite in California - Blog - World Savvy | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

From a boat in Bangladesh to standing in San Francisco, World Savvy has taken us on the journey of a lifetime through the American Youth Leadership Program. After spending a month together traveling halfway around the world, to say it was difficult to separate upon our arrivals back in the U.S. would be an understatement. We had become a family. Upon seeing each other in California again I was reminded of everything we had gone through. The realities of traveling through slums, chars, overcrowded Dhaka streets, experiencing traveler’s diarrhea, moonlit rooftops, new cuisines, meeting our incredible Bangladeshi counterparts; only the people in our group understood that.

Blind exchange student track runner loves to feel the wind in her ears | YES Program

Blind exchange student track runner loves to feel the wind in her ears | YES Program | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it
She came to the U.S. via a foreign exchange program, World Link Inc., sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. She is from Gaziantep, a city of about 1.3 million people in eastern Turkey near the Syrian border. It is an ancient yet vibrant city known for its industry and agricultural products, such as pistachios.

She finds it interesting that she ended up in a small farming community in Iowa rather than a more glamorous locale, such as California.

“I was kind of surprised that I am going to a little farm town, no famous people. It was kind of weird,” she said. “But I am actually kind of thankful to God that I am here.”

N.H. Foes of IB Program Seek to Keep it Out of Schools

N.H. Foes of IB Program Seek to Keep it Out of Schools | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

The fast-growing International Baccalaureate program has come under fire in New Hampshire from critics who suggest it indoctrinates students. The state House of Representatives recently passed a bill that appears designed to block schools from using the program.

"Do you want your children to be indoctrinated to be world citizens or do you want them to be residents of this state and this country?" said Rep. Ralph Boehm, a sponsor of the bill, according to the newspaper.

..  on May 16 the New Hampshire Senate rejected the bill from the House that would have barred districts from using IB. But will lawmakers in other states pick up the anti-IB banner next year with legislation in their own states? Stay tuned.

Another approach is to find or create a global project in which students learn from and work collaboratively with their peers in one or more classrooms around the world. Given the coordination this requires, many teachers turn to established projects hosted by organizations such as ePals, Flat Classroom Projects, New York-based Global Kids, iEARN, and TakingITGlobal. Educators looking to form their own global partnerships can take advantage of online communities such as The Global Education Conference Network or Skype in the Classroom. For inspiration, Connect All Schools offers stories of international collaboration between U.S. schools and partners worldwide.

Under Secretary McHale Delivers Remarks at Exchange 2.0 Summit | U.S. Department of State Blog | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it
Writing for the U.S. Department of State DipNote blog, DipNote Bloggers highlight Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Judith McHale remarks at the Exchange 2.0 Summit on April 27, 2011.

"We need to explore more ways to strategically and consistently incorporate connective technologies into our exchange efforts. As President Obama has said, we need to "create a new online network, so a young person in Kansas can communicate instantly with a young person in Cairo." With the help of many of you in this room, we have already started down this path at the State Department. Our Global Connections and Exchange Program has been in operation for ten years. This landmark public diplomacy initiative connects students who may never share a lunch table or walk home together. But with online classrooms, there are no limits on sharing their ideas. Together, they learn to be positive forces for change in their local communities."

In addition to loving the fact that putting together this presentation was in itself a global project, it was a great chance to reflect again on why I am so passionate about global projects. Listening this past Thursday to one teacher practicing online with the moderator (who was in Michigan), I was reminded how much we have to gain by letting students communicate with their peers around the world.

May 2012 – #globalclassroom Chat Archives | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

The seventh monthly #globalclassroom chat hosted several incredibly lively conversations about inquiry learning and global collaboration. As Laurie Renton (@RentonL) so succinctly writes:

Creating a meaningful and sustainable global inquiry project is no easy feat. Fostering buy in and personalisation for students, fitting it meaningfully into your daily curricular student learner outcomes is tricky, although it IS possible. This occurs when you are able to connect with experts who are willing to continue a meaningful relationship to enhance your journey, through Skype, blogging, and other such communication tools.
