LanguageCorps Asia - TEFL / TESOL Teaching English: Global Education-Bringing the World to Your Classroom

LanguageCorps Asia - TEFL / TESOL Teaching English: Global Education-Bringing the World to Your Classroom | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it
This year I participated in the Teachers for Global Classrooms fellowship, a program of the U.S. State Department.

I joined 64 teachers from around the country in completing an online course on best practices in global education. In February, we attended a global education symposium in Washington, D.C., accompanied by administrators from our schools.

And I just returned from an eye-opening trip to Brazil with 10 other TGC teachers. We spent two weeks observing and co-teaching in schools (both public and private). Other teachers in the program traveled to India, Ghana, Indonesia, Morocco, and Ukraine.

One takeaway from my fellowship experience is a clearer understanding of what teaching global competencies might look like in practice. The Asia Society and the Council of Chief State School Officers have produced a series of global competence matrices (PDF). I started using these matrices this year as a way to evaluate my own curriculum. Recently, I've been embedding competencies into my student assessment rubrics.

Free Technology for Teachers: 21st Century Engagement with Skype in the Classroom

Free Technology for Teachers: 21st Century Engagement with Skype in the Classroom | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Guest Post from Lisa Mims.

It’s always amazing to me how educators, can grab hold of something that wasn’t developed with us in mind, and make it our own. We have a knack for doing that, and we’ve done it with Skype. With Skype, educators are knocking down classroom walls, mallowing our students the chance to hear from experts, and creating global learners....

Teaching Global Citizenship | The White House | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it
Jenny Buccos, chosen from a from a pool of more than 1,500 candidates nominated through the White House web site, was selected as a Champion of Change for the positive impact she is making in her community.

It is an honor to be recognized as a White House Champion of Change for my work with ProjectExplorer.org promoting cross-cultural understanding. Over the last decade, I have been an advocate for global citizenship. I believe that global awareness is a critical 21st century skill, yet this topic is nearly absent from the national dialogue on education.

A Whole Earth Inquiry

A Whole Earth Inquiry | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

In our classroom area we have several different globes, a large world map and a big book atlas. We refer to these regularly during day to day discussions about story settings, current affairs, absent family and friends and, increasingly, our class on-line learning network.

Recently I have observed groups of children crowded around the globe, looking for countries to which they have a personal connection....

Upgrading Our Global Skills for Lifelong Learning

Upgrading Our Global Skills for Lifelong Learning | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

This was one topic examined at a public forum held immediately after the inaugural meeting of the Global Cities Education Network, which took place at Asia Society's new Hong Kong Center.

Tom Boasberg, Superintendent of Denver Public Schools, started by saying learning agility is one of the key skills he feels is important for the 21st century. Students must love to learn everything, including but not limited to science, ethics, arts, and world languages. Boasberg feels that Hong Kong is an example of a place that has used all of these disciplines to advance its society, pointing to success in the worlds of finance, design, and movies.

American and Salvadoran Educators Unite to Bring Global Perspectives to their Communities | IREX - Civil Society, Education and Media Development

American and Salvadoran Educators Unite to Bring Global Perspectives to their Communities | IREX - Civil Society, Education and Media Development | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

“When you are in the same place for many years, you believe what you are doing is right,” Martinez said, “but when I was with people from many backgrounds on the TEA Program, I saw many new perspectives.” He co-taught in a California classroom, took education classes with other TEA Fellows, and participated in local civic and cultural activities. Upon returning to El Salvador, Martinez incorporated these experiences into his English lessons.

Martinez also learned that the United States and El Salvador share common education challenges and visited one California school troubled by gang violence that reminded him of his school in San Salvador. “I saw that there were dangerous places in the United States too. They had some students who were gang members too, but there were also many giving people who were willing to share what they knew.”

Linking US Global Competence With Education Globally

Linking US Global Competence With Education Globally | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it
Thanks to the work of the Asia Society and others, there is significant buzz about global competence these days. There is a growing consensus (if not funding) around the importance of young people in the U.S. knowing the languages and cultures of other countries. And it's not difficult for political leaders to grasp how important global competence is at both the K-12 and university levels for the US to be able to prepare its young people for 21st century careers.

But, taking a more global perspective, it does little good for us in the U.S. if much of the rest of the world has no quality education ...

Maria Otero
Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights

Loy Henderson Auditorium, HST

Washington, DC

June 22, 2012

"... The need for people-to-people exchanges is more compelling than ever today. Even in an age of digital connections, nothing substitutes for living in a different culture, learning to communicate in another’s language, understanding the institutions, traditions, and celebrations that define each of our nations.

"That’s why programs like YES are so important. Through this program, more than 6000 international students have connected with their American peers in communities across the United States, deepening their understanding of each other and building friendships and ties that will bind them together for generations...."

Internationally Connecting All Schools in the USA by 2016, Sunday 7-8:30 pm #ISTE2012 | @scoopit http://bit.ly/... #globaled | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

This Global Gallery session will provide ISTE attendees to share information on what is happening at their school in terms of international programs, exchange activities, global curriculum, World Languages, online interaction, etc. It is designed to be interactive so that teachers (and others) identify their school in the innovative map-based database of all public and private K-12 schools in the country and then tell a story (with photo, videos and text) about what is happening.

This initiative is sponsored by 100 international education organizations and is designed to provide information to serve as examples of what is possible for educators wishing to use different forms of technology to connect with the world. For example, participants will be able to scour the technology-based tool to learn who is using video-conferencing with specific countries in specific curriculum areas--and then be able to replicate that example by working with one of the 100 partner organizations.

Do you speak my language?¿Hablas mi idioma?你說我的語言嗎?

Do you speak my language?¿Hablas mi idioma?你說我的語言嗎? | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

In the past few years, my classes and I have been on a journey across the globe using the Internet. We have interacted and collaborated with classrooms across the world by working with excellent global education organizations such as Flat Classroom™, iEARN, and Globalclassroom. We have emailed, Skyped, snail-mailed, and used so many online Web 2.0 tools I have lost count.

As a parent, teacher and member of the human race, I think that being comfortable in a global arena is not only the key to the economic success of our country, but the key to any kind of stability in our world. The world we live in now is much smaller with technology, and will continue to get smaller. There is so much misunderstanding, fear and distrust between nations, religions, races, and cultures. I experience that separation dissolve when human beings interact on a personal level as students, parents, teachers, sons, daughters, husbands, wives…as just people.

What is Global Education?

What is Global Education? | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

We live in a changing world where people are more “connected” than ever before. Even if you don’t acknowledge it, we are connected through the clothes we wear, the food we eat, and the people with whom we interact every day, both in person and online. Schools need to change to meet needs of our modern world.

Top 10 Reasons You Should Join the Global Read Aloud #Glread12

Top 10 Reasons You Should Join the Global Read Aloud #Glread12 | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

The premise is simple; we pick a book to read aloud to our students during a set 4-week period and during that time we try to make as many global connections as possible. Each teacher decides how much time they would like to dedicate and how involved they would like to be. Some people choose to connect with just one class, while others go for as many as possible. The scope and depth of the project is up to you.

In the past we have used Twitter, Skype, Edmodo, our wiki, email, regular mail, Kidblog, and any other tools we can think of to make these connections. Teachers get a community of other educators to do a global project with, hopefully inspiring them to continue these connections through the year.

Connected Educator Month

Connected Educator Month | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it
Network to Learn, Collaborate to Innovate Online communities and learning networks are helping hundreds of thousands of educators learn, reducing isolation and providing “just in time” access to knowledge and opportunities for collaboration.

The emergence of Skype, Twitter events such as #edchat and #kinderchat, and new collaboration platforms, like the Global Education Conference community, show a deep desire for US educators to develop international PLNs. We hope the Connected Educators effort shines a spotlight on these communities and others, like Connect All Schools, which are changing how we think about teaching and learning, and our peers abroad.

Edlightenment - Classrooms without borders. Learning without limits.

Edlightenment - Classrooms without borders. Learning without limits. | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Last week we met Miguel, a student from a rural village in the Amazon. The question inspiring his drama was: Can Miguel become a doctor in Brazil? There were a number of obstacles that made this unlikely. But there is also good news on the horizon for Miguel and young people just like him.

Youth in Brazil frequently must choose between supporting their family and going to school.
I know we’ve all had those surreal moments when it feels like we’re already in the future. Most of mine are inspired by Apple products. Well Apple and the iPhone have made the leap to Brazil, but the future is already here. I visited a TV studio in the Amazon that is going to change education for the entire world.
