TakingITGlobal - For Educators / TIGed | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Global collaboration starts with connecting yourself to the world. Students are the greatest textbook ever written for each other. The same is true for teachers. We are passionate about connecting and facilitating effective collaborations between classrooms because we’ve seen the power of how it can engage students and teach them the skills they need to be successful in the 21st century. Join this book club and be part of the conversation around "Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds" AND part of the conversation around Taking IT Global and our tools for engaging students with technology-enabled global learning experiences.

As part of Connected Educators Month, last Friday I sat in on “The Sun Never Sets”, a panel discussion about global connected education trends and how connected educators around the world can help each other improve practice, with panelists Ed Gragert, Lucy Gray, Vicki Davis, Julie Lindsay, and Anne Mirtschin, Steve Hargadon was moderating.

Lucy Gray mentioned Professional Generosity, a phrase she describes in her TedxTalk, and I can’t think of better examples than the people on this panel.

People-to-People Ties: The Heart of the U.S.-India Partnership w/ Amb. Rao & @tsonenshine | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Ambassador RAO: Well, when you speak of people-to-people communication and connectivity, of course the first area that comes to mind is education, and education that is very connected with the modern technological advancements of today. I'm speaking of digital connectivity; I'm speaking of online education. In today's globalized world, this access to knowledge should be free and open and transparent for people all around the world. This is really a world beyond borders that we are talking about; therefore education is certainly a very, very important area.

Reflections on Leadership and Learning: Redefining Professional Development

Reflections on Leadership and Learning: Redefining Professional Development | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Here are what I am now coming to realize are my non-negotiables for quality, effective professional development for adult learners:
• Dynamic, engaging presentations of information in short, meaningful chunks
• Time for participants to reflect and engage with one another about the content
• References to social media and web-based resources
• Acknowledgment that collectively we all know more than we know in isolation; tap into the participant’s knowledge/ background/ experiences (consider a pre-assessment of your audience!)
• Time for participants to plan/brainstorm/discuss ways to apply new learning to current work
• Potential for follow up with colleagues outside of the conference (twitter back channels or hashtags, google docs, edmoto, etc.)

#NSLI-Y #China Summer Newsletter | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

The second week, students started their Chinese calligraphy class. They were introduced to the “four treasures of the study”: brush, paper, ink and ink stone. Elbows up, backs straight! The brushes should be held perpendicular to the paper. The room fell quiet as the students intently watched the teacher demonstrate how to write the first stroke. There are 8 basic strokes for Chinese characters. The students practiced the heng(horizontal) stroke first. They dipped their brushes in ink and practice at least 10 times on newspaper before they try writing on the white paper ...

Putting Arabic Language Skills to Use

Putting Arabic Language Skills to Use | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

During an excursion to Chefchaouen and a trip to the market, one student writes about putting her Arabic language skills to use:

"Since I'm obviously a tourist, the prices shopkeepers give me are usually much steeper than the prices they would give a native speaker. Although I'll never be able to completely avoid this problem, I decided I could try and do something about it by not revealing how much of a beginner I am. Through a combination of using as much Arabic as I could, finally knowing my numbers well, and acting confident even when I wasn't entirely sure what was going on, I was able to secure a really good price for some napkins for my mother. Even our Moroccan tour guide was impressed with the price I got!

Scoring such a good bargain as a result of my Arabic skills made me feel like a true Moroccan native."
