ROCK HILL, S.C., May 19, 2014 -- 3D Systems announced today its partnership with Level Up Village to provide students aged 8 to 12 with STEM-based.

"The only way we can prepare children for tomorrow is to teach them how to think in both global and local contexts, and enable them to innovate and adapt to changes. I think Level Up Village is doing a wonderful job at this and the program is helping us instill all these skills into our students, preparing them to be better future leaders," said Abdullah Syed, a teacher in Pakistan at the Society for International Education.

How ANY Classroom Can Become a Global Classroom—In Five Easy Steps

How ANY Classroom Can Become a Global Classroom—In Five Easy Steps | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

An ongoing communication with an enthusiastic social studies teacher in a large Midwestern school district ended abruptly when she emailed me: “due to NCLB [No Child Left Behind] corrective action our district will need to channel our professional development time and funds toward this goal. I’m so sorry that we won’t be able to pursue our global education projects . . .” Another educator and friend wrote to me “our school will be focusing on diversity, inclusion, and anti-bullying efforts; at this time it’s just too much for us to consider global education.”

In both these cases, administrators made decisions based on imperatives they considered to be mutually exclusive. But developing staff capabilities in “global education” can actually help to realize and reinforce the academic as well as social goals these administrators are concerned about, in part by creating more authentic and relevant student engagement. These help spur deeper and more inclusive learning.

This education conference was different--from who took the stage, to mix of conference goers, to the themes that dominated the day. At the heart of that difference was a clear-eyed recognition that race, poverty, and justice are imperative issues for everyone daring to step into the education arena.

Checking in with Portugal's big projects to support technology use in education

Checking in with Portugal's big projects to support technology use in education | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

For me, the most interesting part of the use of technology in education isn't the planning for it (although I spend a lot of time helping people who do that sort of thing) nor the evaluation of the impact of such use (I spend a lot of time on that stuff as well).

The most interesting part is implementation -- because it's so messy; because a fidelity to certain theoretical constructs and models often comes into rude collision with reality; because that's where you really *learn* about what works, and what doesn't, and what impact the whole enterprise may be having. How are kids, and teachers, actually using the stuff? What unexpected problems are people having -- and how are they being addressed? What is changing or happening that is interesting or surprising that wasn't part of the original plan, but which is potentially quite exciting?

One place where things have actually happened related to technology use in education, and where they continue to happen, at a rather large scale, is Portugal.

“Getting the Information Albatross off our Back” by Dr. Amy Zalman

“Getting the Information Albatross off our Back” by Dr. Amy Zalman | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it
In this month's edition of Perspectives, Dr. Amy Zalman argues for a systemic overhaul of U.S. information activities to meet the current challenges of the Information Age.

...

"The recently established J. Christopher Stevens Virtual Exchange Initiative, named for the American ambassador to Libya who was killed in September 2012, offers a positive example of this new way of approaching informational power. The initiative, which is funded by multiple government and private donors, is grounded in evidence that sustained, virtual educational exchanges have statistically significant positive effects on participants’ attitudes toward each other. The program will guide students in different countries through joint long-term projects; students will meet virtually, using new communications technologies. Los Angeles high school students might, for example, work with students in a Cairo classroom to study how to reduce urban traffic congestion. Each group would gather evidence in their own city, then work together to generate the best possible solutions."
