How Children Learn: Portraits of Classrooms Around the World | Brain Pickings

How Children Learn: Portraits of Classrooms Around the World | Brain Pickings | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Since 2004, Julian Germain has been capturing the inner lives of schools around the world, from England to Nigeria to Qatar, in his large-scale photographs of schoolchildren in class. Classroom Portraits (public library) is part "Where Children Sleep," part "Bureaucratics", part "What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets," part something else entirely — a poignant lens on a system-phenomenon that is both global in reach and strikingly local in degree of peculiarity, revealed through more than 450 portraits of schoolchildren from 20 countries.

Why Technology Is Key to Overcoming the Language Barrier - Mashable

Why Technology Is Key to Overcoming the Language Barrier - Mashable | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

5. As we move closer to better translation capabilities, what kind of impact will this have on cultures around the world?

I cannot emphasize enough the impact this technology will have on culture. Language and culture are inseparable and language plays a huge role in the transmission of different cultures across the globe. I see two significant benefits from the diffusion of culture through the use of this technology. The first is that different cultural perspectives will become available across a much larger audience. That will lead to better understanding of perspectives, even if it doesn’t mean that there will be agreement on all issues. The second is that the cultural diffusion will become much more accessible regardless of the socioeconomic conditions that may have prevented some cultures from either sharing their culture or taking advantage of new cultural influences that can now become available.

Gabrielle Dunne's curator insight, April 6, 2014 10:05 PM

Provides and outline for how a teacher should structure and assess a service learning project. Also gives suggestions for followup/reflection activities. I thought that was particularly important because giving students time to think critically about a project they have completed is just as important as completing the project itself.

Scholars, Spies, and Global Studies - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Similarly educators increasingly agree that all undergraduates ought to pursue some study abroad. But should it involve language study and full cultural immersion? Or short-term travel and networking through internships and other kinds of programs?

But what does "global" really mean?

At a time when the relationship between the United States and the world is changing rapidly, we can no longer afford not to answer that question.

Google Earth is an amazing way to teach children of all ages (and adults for that matter) about the geography of the Earth. It is such an abstract way of conveying geographic concepts. What an amazing teaching tool....and as an added bonus, it's FREE!!

It was piloted using 8 classes in 2010-11, and grew to over 50 classes in 2011-12. We are hoping to continue that growth in 2012-13.

Getting Beyond the Connected Conundrum Requires Collective Action

Getting Beyond the Connected Conundrum Requires Collective Action | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Most educators do not see sharing their practice beyond the walls of their schools or even their classrooms as a primary professional responsibility, and most have been taught that seeking support, resources, and guidance in social spaces that are not strictly private signals weakness or even incompetence. The challenge is not simply awareness, technical skill, or time. It is about core professional identity. ...
