11 Years Later- How Living in a Primarily Muslim Country Has Changed My Views of the World | YES Program | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it
Writing this was the first time I’ve come face to face with the stereotypes I didn’t realize I was making when I was younger. I am forever grateful to my natural family, to the State Department, and to my host family for supporting me in this year. Exchange is often referred to as a catalyst for change in someone’s character and opinions, and that has proven absolutely true. It’s hard to measure the effectiveness of programs like this in statistics, but sitting here writing this next to my Muslim family, I am at home; I am happy. And that shows more than any percentage or pie chart could ever say.

The 11th anniversary of 9-11 is today. 9-11 will be an event that will forever define our generation, but it is up to us how so. We can be considered the age group that hates Muslims, or we can be the group that learned to love in the midst of tragedy.

Teaching from experience

Teaching from experience | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

It is rather opportune that at this very time, many of my younger classes were taking part in a global project for International Dot Day. Chrissy Hellier of Bangkok organised a Dots Around the World project and invited interested classes to collaborate. Thirty three classes across the world enlisted. As Chrissy will produce a video of all dots, we had to be able to share them in an efficient manner. We had several choices for sharing our class dots and they illustrated beautifully cloud computing:...

World Savvy: 2012 Global Competency Survey - Why Global Education?

World Savvy: 2012 Global Competency Survey - Why Global Education? | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

World Savvy’s Global Competency Survey was designed to cover knowledge, skills, values and behaviors –and demonstrate the degree of global competency we could expect the average American high school graduate to possess. The results highlight the gap in this critical area in the US education system: we are not preparing today’s graduates for the reality of a global economy and workforce.

Bosso, who was recognized as State Teacher of the Year for his use of global education to engage his students, strengthen classroom instruction, and develop high-quality curricula, has pursued numerous professional development opportunities to bring global competencies—such as the ability to communicate effectively, take initiative, and work collaboratively to solve problems—to his classroom. It was this drive that led Bosso to Cape Coast, Ghana as part of IREX’s Teachers for Global Classrooms (TGC) Program—an experience that continues to shape his focus on emphasizing global competencies in his Berlin, Connecticut classroom.

U.S. Public Diplomacy Increasing Domestic Outreach | CSC Center for Strategic Communication

U.S. Public Diplomacy Increasing Domestic Outreach | CSC Center for Strategic Communication | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

I asked Ms. Rosenthal what was going on with the new mailings. She explained that is was part of an effort to share knowledge about PD to a larger audience, and open more of a two-way dialog with people in and outside the organization about what they are doing around the world.

I was also curious if they had concerns about the new mailings running afoul of the Smith-Mundt Act, which (arguably) precludes PD communications from being shared with a domestic audience. Ms. Rosenthal said they were tracking that issue closely and worked with the lawyers to follow the restrictions while still allowing greater engagement for R. “You need to follow the law, but at the same time you don’t want to constrain public diplomacy unnecessarily,”

Debunking the Global Education Canard

Debunking the Global Education Canard | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

World Savvy released its 2012 Global Competency Survey yesterday, and the results are both timely (there are Libya questions) and contradictory to the assumption that young people in the United States are not interested in learning about the world. Rather, young Americans are keenly aware that it is both in their best interest and in the national interest that they understand global issues, engage with their peers worldwide, and gain the skills needed to find employment in today’s global economy.

New Directions in Social Education Research || Information Age Publishing

New Directions in Social Education Research || Information Age Publishing | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

As societies strive to empower citizens with the skills, understandings and dispositions needed to operate in an interconnected global age, teachers are being encouraged to help students use technologies to develop new knowledge and foster cross cultural understandings.

As pressures mount for society to equip today’s youth with both the global and digital understandings necessary to confront the challenges of the 21st century, a more thorough analysis must be undertaken to examine the role of technology on student learning (Peters, 2009). This work will highlight the complex, contested, and contingent ways new technologies are being used by today’s youth in a digital and global age. This text will present audiences with in-demand research that investigates the ways in which student use of technology mediates and complicates their learning about the world, its people, and global issues.

What Happens When Half a Million Kids Choose to Matter?

What Happens When Half a Million Kids Choose to Matter? | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it
There are those who are so concerned about the seemingly overwhelming intrusion of digital media into our daily lives that some schools are still restricted from using social media tools in the classroom.

But what if these fears are totally unfounded? What if half a million students and teachers from around the world chose to use social media to "Make Your Mark Matter" in a positive and uplifting way? That's exactly what will happen this Saturday, Sept. 15, during International Dot Day.

Come Celebrate International Dot Day with Us - September 15, 2012 | Angela Maiers, Speaker, Educator, Writer | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Every year on September 15, innovative educators around the world celebrate International Dot Day by making time to encourage their students’ creativity and genius potential. Inspired by Peter H. Reynolds treasured story, The Dot, students are encouraged to “make their mark” by starting simply with a dot and then seeing where that dot takes you.

Over 350,000 educators and students have registered so far for International Dot Day and have signed up to share their stories with one another using the Skype in The Classroom Network. It is awe-inspiring to see children, teachers, leaders and entire communities representing all 50 states and spanning 6 continents join together to let one another know how much they matter to the world.
