When Lesedi arrived in the mail we had to begin at the beginning. We read books, watched YouTube clips and researched on line. Quickly made connections to the horrific truth and the selfish reasons behind the problem. I have never seen a group of children become enraged so quickly over an issue.

We've all heard the proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child." When Hillary Clinton used it as the title for her book, she wrote that she chose it because "it offers a timeless reminder that children will thrive only if their families thrive and if the whole of society cares enough to provide for them.

As a teacher, I can tell you: Teachers need a village, too!

MOUSE celebrated their 15th Anniversary on May 20th with a student led exhibit demonstrating the latest technologies and by honoring leaders dedicated to the education and technology arena.

If we are to attain both the current education MDG and a new goal with these components by 2030 that addresses these components, we will need to have what I call the three C's: creativity, collaboration and capital.

I have to be honest--I've gotten really tired of having workshops on humanizing the world through the creative arts turned down by conferences which consider themselves innovative.  I'm tired of how hard it is to convince anyone anymore that artistic expression matters for its own sake, not just when embedded into the latest STEAM initiative.  My heart is still that of a creative writing teacher, the daughter and granddaughter of musicians and artists, someone who wants to bring out the best in students' ability to express themselves, who wants to bring something to life for students, through writing, that is about living with a deeper sense of connection to our common human experience, that is about communicating across the boundaries which separate us, and being our most authentic selves with each other.

What is the Regional Digital Storytelling Workshop?

In today's multimedia world, community organizing and development require a range of communication and media skills, reaching out to audiences over a variety of platforms. This training will not only allow participants to enhance and expand their technical and social media skills, but will also explore time-tested communication and storytelling techniques, focusing on creating accessible messages for both local and international audiences.

One thing is clear from practitioners and researchers alike: teacher PD is not simply an event, or a session, or a workshop. Nor does it fit neatly into buckets for how-to-guides, lesson planning, pedagogical tricks, and tech support. This is one taxonomy for thinking about specific needs, but it does not necessarily lead to improved teacher practice.

Professional development is a process. A habit-forming endeavor. An ongoing individual and institutional professional responsibility to seek, share, develop, and exchange the most needed and desired skill sets.
