"Exchange 2.0 - Technology-enabled International Interaction" was developed to help teachers use the Internet to "reach out" globally. These materials were initially prepared as part of the US Department of Education's inaugural International Education Week in November 2000 and were hosted by the US Department of Education. This is the third version of this Guide.

Google Lat Long: Meet the new Google Maps: A map for every person and place

Google Lat Long: Meet the new Google Maps: A map for every person and place | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

What if we told you that during your lifetime, Google could create millions of custom maps...each one just for you?

In the past, such a notion would have been unbelievable: a map was just a map, and you got the same one for New York City, whether you were searching for the Empire State Building or the coffee shop down the street. What if, instead, you had a map that’s unique to you, always adapting to the task you want to perform right this minute?

This is what you will have with the introduction of the new Google Maps – a mapping experience that helps you find places you never would have thought to search for. ...

Early Childhood Reflections (May #globalclassroom Archives) | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

The May #globalclassroom chats were some of the liveliest and productive we’ve had in some time. With contributions from leading early childhood educators around the world, it is hard to sum up the true impact of these chats …I highly recommend exploring the archives for great links, resources, and ideas for integrarating global perspectives into the early years.

iEARN-USA's insight:
I was so impressed with this sixth grader's creation on Google Earth and asked Avia if I could have Jason teach us how he created his story. Jason's Google Earth Story Thanks to Aviva for her open mind and flexibility, two first graders in Iowa and Jason who lives in Canada were connected via Skype the following week.   Look at their proud faces:)  I decided to choose these boys since they both love to write, but they are somewhat stuck in the Spongebob and Minecraft world:) What a perfect opportunity it was for them to learn a new tool and idea for writing!  Jason was very patient with the boys throughout the process even though it took them a while to complete a sample project.  He was a rock star!  I also have to thank our school technology integrationist, Mrs. Sievert (@valsievert) for being there to support the boys. They are working on their new writing project right now.  I hope to post their stories here when they complete them.

Try A Mystery Skype. Here's Why.

Try A Mystery Skype. Here's Why. | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

If you’ve never tried a Mystery Skype with your class, you should. It’s a highly engaging way to build important competencies in your students. A Mystery Skype is just a simple guessing game at first sight, but it’s really so much more. Two classrooms arrange to connect with each other using Skype, and then take turns asking yes/no questions to try to discover each other’s exact location. It’s a great way to make an initial connection that may lead to further collaborative learning projects.

Humanizing the World through the Creative Arts: The WORDshop and an Argument for Art's Sake

Humanizing the World through the Creative Arts: The WORDshop and an Argument for Art's Sake | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

I have to be honest--I've gotten really tired of having workshops on humanizing the world through the creative arts turned down by conferences which consider themselves innovative.  I'm tired of how hard it is to convince anyone anymore that artistic expression matters for its own sake, not just when embedded into the latest STEAM initiative.  My heart is still that of a creative writing teacher, the daughter and granddaughter of musicians and artists, someone who wants to bring out the best in students' ability to express themselves, who wants to bring something to life for students, through writing, that is about living with a deeper sense of connection to our common human experience, that is about communicating across the boundaries which separate us, and being our most authentic selves with each other.

Well said.

Remarks to the Foreign Service Institute Overseas Security Seminar | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Sec. Kerry:

"But today we also have digital bridges to connect different cultures – and I don’t just mean Facebook and Twitter. The State Department’s Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau runs a virtual exchange program that connects teachers and students in the United States with their counterparts in the Middle East and North Africa. These students are working together online, learning from each other about their cultures and history, and they’re forging lasting relationships.

"So I’m excited to tell you that we are right now working closely with Chris Stevens’s family on a public-private virtual exchange that we’re going to call the Chris Stevens Youth Network. And we believe this can lead to the largest ever increase in people-to-people exchanges between the United States and the Middle East and North Africa. And we believe it will also dramatically increase the number and diversity of young people who have a meaningful cross-cultural experience – the same experience that Chris, and I think all of you understand is so important."

Seeking: A Taxonomy for Professional Development (EdSurge News)

Seeking: A Taxonomy for Professional Development (EdSurge News) | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

One thing is clear from practitioners and researchers alike: teacher PD is not simply an event, or a session, or a workshop. Nor does it fit neatly into buckets for how-to-guides, lesson planning, pedagogical tricks, and tech support. This is one taxonomy for thinking about specific needs, but it does not necessarily lead to improved teacher practice.

Professional development is a process. A habit-forming endeavor. An ongoing individual and institutional professional responsibility to seek, share, develop, and exchange the most needed and desired skill sets.

Today, we're making it possible for you to go back in time and get a stunning historical perspective on the changes to the Earth’s surface over time. Working with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), NASA and TIME, we're releasing more than a quarter-century of images of Earth taken from space, compiled for the first time into an interactive time-lapse experience. We believe this is the most comprehensive picture of our changing planet ever made available to the public.

Small Town, Big Dreams | YES Program

Small Town, Big Dreams | YES Program | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

These small town girls dream about studying further and getting higher education. Most of my students want to study further. A few of them want to be English language teachers. Unfortunately, their environmental conditions and restrictions put on girls’ education because of the cultural norms do not allow that. When I was a young girl from a small town in Baluschistan, the most backward province of Pakistan with the lowest literacy rate, I went through these troubles too and have experienced the same. My family realized my love for education and moved to the big city Karachi so that I could go to a good school there and can make my own career. There I got the YES scholarship and went to the USA. When I got this amazing platform of the YES Alumni, I always wanted to bring education in the small towns of Pakistan for girls. So that other girls like me, could make their own identity and get their rights of education. This English tutoring helped me fulfill my dream. I am glad I could do something for Pakistan.  It was not much; I wish I could do more.
