Exchange 2.0 - Technology-enabled International Interaction | Connect all Schools | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

"Exchange 2.0 - Technology-enabled International Interaction" was developed to help teachers use the Internet to "reach out" globally. These materials were initially prepared as part of the US Department of Education's inaugural International Education Week in November 2000 and were hosted by the US Department of Education. This is the third version of this Guide.

daily edventures | The True Power Of The Global Forum

daily edventures | The True Power Of The Global Forum | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

On Thursday morning, March 13, I sat down at a table with an educator from Taiwan, Indonesia, France and Tunisia. We were given a one-word topic – poverty – and asked to create a learning activity from this one word.

We started simply as Team 28 but eight hours later, five teachers from four continents, teaching at three different grade levels, created one project, “Five Countries Fighting Poverty”, that will help all of our students in their learning in so many ways. That is the power of the Global Forum.

iEARN-USA's insight:

Fantastic story!

Make Earth Day a Global Learning Day

Make Earth Day a Global Learning Day | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

By definition, Earth Day is a global learning day. Earth, water, air quality, climate, chemistry, physics, physiology, plant life and animal habitats don't respect national boundaries, so they are inherently global in nature, inviting wider exploration and conversation. This fact in itself can serve as a launch for a global conversation. Vexing challenges that stump the best scientific minds are solved globally using collaborative teams located in different locales that experiment and study issues from diverse angles and approaches.

Charting the PD Waters With Badges (EdSurge News)

Charting the PD Waters With Badges (EdSurge News) | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Educators can earn the badge by then integrating what they’ve learned into their instruction in some way. Users can submit ‘proof’ to me that they have done so. Their evidence can include a URL demonstrating what they have done, a lesson plan, or even just a text description of how they or their students have used the tool. Upon receiving their documentation, I issue them a digital badge for their learning. I release a new badge every few weeks, as to not overwhelm teachers with too many choices.

After my very first tweet to promote the platform, I was thrilled to see that not only did teachers in my district join, but teachers from all over the country (and even some internationally) were joining.

Welcome to Educating Modern Learners

Welcome to Educating Modern Learners | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

In the time it takes to read this, about 7,500 people from around the world will gain regular access to the Internet for the first time. Twelve in the next second. One point one million in the next 24 hours.

By the end of this decade, 5 billion people around the globe will have access. Access to what is already close to becoming the sum of human knowledge. Access to millions of tools and apps that now run from ‘the cloud’ or on the devices we carry in our backpacks and our pockets.

And, most importantly, access to one another.

Conference focuses on state of area and foreign language studies | Inside Higher Ed | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

A paradox was evident at a conference this weekend on the future of international and foreign language studies, with educators excited about rising student and employer interest but concerned about the decline in federal and university support for their programs.

iEARN-USA's insight:

Surprisingly, no mention of new technologies to support language learning and area studies.

Finnish Education Chief: 'We Created a School System Based on Equality'

Finnish Education Chief: 'We Created a School System Based on Equality' | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Finnish education often seems paradoxical to outside observers because it appears to break a lot of the rules we take for granted. Finnish children don’t begin school until age 7. They have more recess, shorter school hours than many U.S. children do (nearly 300 fewer hours per year in elementary school), and the lightest homework load of any industrialized nation. There are no gifted programs, almost no private schools, and no high-stakes national standardized tests.

Yet over the past decade Finland has consistently performed among the top nations on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a standardized test given to 15-year olds in 65 nations and territories around the world…. The Finnish paradox is that by focusing on the bigger picture for all, Finland has succeeded at fostering the individual potential of most every child.

Ratios, Rates, Proportions Help with Intentional Learning

Ratios, Rates, Proportions Help with Intentional Learning | Connect All Schools | Scoop.it

Begin Chapter 8. My Everyday Math curriculum states that it is time to work with rates, ratios and proportions. This has always been a great unit in my mind.  It let's us play with REAL WORLD math.  Now, alongside finding how many chocolate chips we need to make 3 1/2 of the recipes, we can discover more about the world, our lending styles, Kiva borrowers and develop empathy.  This is what makes math real and exciting.

Getting the boys to stay focussed with spring break on the brain, I had the boys answer the following questions for me using kiva.org.  As they discovered an individual we listed the country they lived in so that we could gather borrowers from across the globe, and 20 different countries.
