Africa’s leaders protect each other

Africa’s leaders protect each other | Confronting hate, prejudice, cruelty, extremism, and dogmatism | Scoop.it
ON JANUARY 28th the Ivory Coast’s Laurent Gbagbo became the first former head of state to go on trial before the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague. Three days later the African Union (AU) resolved, among other rude comments about the court, to support Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir in his determination to ignore the warrant for his arrest on charges of genocide in Darfur. It also expressed “deep concern regarding…the wisdom of the continued prosecution” of African leaders including Kenya’s deputy president, William Ruto, who faces charges of orchestrating violence after an election eight years ago. Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta, who faced similar charges which the ICC dropped in 2014, is urging African members of the ICC to withdraw from it.

Empathy Neuroscience: Translational Relevance for Conflict Resolution - British Academy

Empathy Neuroscience: Translational Relevance for Conflict Resolution - British Academy | Confronting hate, prejudice, cruelty, extremism, and dogmatism | Scoop.it
This conference brings together empathy neuroscience research to tackle a key translational challenge: its relevance for conflict resolution. It focuses on the idea that taking the other person’s perspective is ultimately necessary to resolve conflict; and that conflicts are perpetuated by adopting a single perspective.

The conference considers the relevance of empathy neuroscience for policy makers working in conflict resolution.

The meeting brings together an international panel of speakers drawn from outstanding scientists, clinicians, scholars, and charities, focusing particularly on the potential role of empathy in the Israel-Palestine conflict. The aims are to enable dialogue and a better understanding of empathy, and to promote the development of evidence-based interventions that foster empathy in conflict zones.

Madaya is starving

Madaya is starving | Confronting hate, prejudice, cruelty, extremism, and dogmatism | Scoop.it
Mothers are being forced to feed their children leaves and cats in Madaya, Syria because the regime is actively starving out 40,000 residents to drive them from their homes and take over the town. When a pregnant woman and her daughter tried to leave this week, she stepped on a land mine. The town is surrounded. There is no escape.

But it’s totally possible to lift this shocking siege. In September the UN brokered a ceasefire between the warring parties in neighbouring towns to let wounded fighters out. If enough of us demand it now, they can get this inhumane and illegal siege totally lifted so families can get food and medicine in, and leave.

Our staff have a direct line into the UN Secretary General’s office and key governments who can broker a ceasefire. But to get their attention our community has to show that this is a global public priority, and that in Ban Ki Moon’s last year of office his legacy will be measured by whether he did everything in his power to stop these humanitarian crimes.

Join the urgent call to save these families.

Jane Mayer's "Dark Money" Book Reveals Koch Brothers Paid Firm Run by Former NYPD Chief to Smear Her

Jane Mayer's "Dark Money" Book Reveals Koch Brothers Paid Firm Run by Former NYPD Chief to Smear Her | Confronting hate, prejudice, cruelty, extremism, and dogmatism | Scoop.it
The just-published book “Dark Money,” penned by New Yorker staff reporter Jane Mayer, reveals that the Koch Brothers hired the former commissioner of the New York Police Department (NYPD) — and his daughter, a former FBI agent — to smear her as a “plagiarist” in the months after the release of her August 2010 bombshell article on the Kochs. That article, titled “Covert Operations,” served at the time as one of the first in-depth pieces of long-form investigative journalism on David and Charles Koch and the influential right-wing political and climate change denial Tea Party network they had Frankensteined. Mayer's book exposes that the Kochs hired the firm Vigilant Resources International, run by former NYPD head Howard Safir and his daughter Jennifer Safir (the former FBI special agent), to do dirty work on their behalf.
