SALT : DISOBEDIENCE ARCHIVE (THE PARK)

SALT : DISOBEDIENCE ARCHIVE (THE PARK) | confettis | Scoop.it
SALT explores critical and timely issues in visual and material culture, and cultivates innovative programs for research and experimental thinking.
Xavier Leton's insight:

The Disobedience Archive is an ongoing, multi-phase video archive and platform of discussion that deals with the relationship between artistic practices and political action. The project is an atlas of the plurality of resistance tactics such as direct action, counter-information and biological resistance. By setting in motion different signs and situations,Disobedience is presented as a network of open topics, brought together by artists, activists, film producers, philosophers and political groups.

The archive is an itinerant and ongoing entity that changes its form and content every time it is exhibited. This approach is strongly connected to the flux of contemporary politics and movements, because they can never find a definitive final shape (trade unions, party, parliament etc.) but are always under transformation. The exhibition at SALT Beyoğlu is curated by Marco Scotini and Andris Brinkmanis accordingly, with installation design by Herkes İçin Mimarlık [Architecture for All]. On this occasion the archive will include internationally sourced materials that date from the 1970s Parco Lambro uprising that took place in Italy up until the 2013 Gezi park events in Istanbul.

#MoneyLab - @Brett_Scott - Applying the #Hacker #Ethic to the #Financial #System

MoneyLab: Coining Alternatives Session 2: Dismantling Global Finance Brett Scott (UK): Applying the Hacker Ethic to the Financial System Conference Day 1 (21…
Xavier Leton's insight:

In his talk, Brett Scott discussed how the hacker ethic can be applied to the financial system. He began by speaking about power, and how people imagine the financial sector can add to, or perpetuate, the inherent power differential that already exists. In a similar vein, Scott goes on to describe the concept of the ‘black box,’ or the abstraction of how the devices we use everyday actually work, obscuring the protocols and means of control embedded in these devices and the people who create, build, and program them. He uses the analogy of the ‘windows interface,’ and compares it to similar obscuring interfaces that can be found in finance.

Moving more to the topic of hacking, Scott displayed a Steve Levy quote saying “Hackers believe that essential lessons can be learned about the system-about the world- from taking things apart, seeing how they work, and using this knowledge to create new and interesting things.” Scott compared this form of subversive ethos to urban exploring, more radical approaches to anthropology, and “kicking the door down to make a f*cking table.” All of these forms of hacking involve the blurring and challenging of boundaries and norms, a theme he went on to discuss in more depth, touching on the ‘copyleft’ movement, silent compositions, and other forms of deconstructing perceived binaries.

ATELIERS DES POSSIBLES CNAM 15 et 16 mai 2014, 9h00 | confettis | Scoop.it

Lucy Kuncheva

Xavier Leton's insight:

I remember a much younger me, in the mid-1980s, when I was starting my research in pattern recognition. How did we live without Google? There was this one major library for Science and Technology in Sofia (Bulgaria), called the Central Institute for Scientific and Technological Information. Its closest rival was the library of the only engineering higher education institution, also in Sofia. There was one large hall with journals, one with conference proceedings and one with patents. How marvellously simple! There were queues for the copy machine, students borrowing coins from one another, and that unmatched warmth in my hearth when I had those important papers neatly laying in my bag.

Faced with the herculean task to browse all these journals, I often felt like an ignorant grain of sand among the rocks. Excitement mixed with frustration, and an early onset of hypertension. Nonetheless, there was an end to this. There were walls, and the treasure was contained within, in its entirety. No such luxury today...

Application for VIDEONALE.15 | Festival for Contemporary Video Art - “The Call of the Wild”

Application for VIDEONALE.15 | Festival for Contemporary Video Art - “The Call of the Wild” | confettis | Scoop.it

DATE/LOCATION
Videonale – Festival for Contemporary Video Art is the international platform for video art and time-based art forms. With VIDEONALE.15 (27/2 – 19/4/2015) the festival will celebrate its 30th anniversary with an exhibition and festival programme in the Kunstmuseum Bonn and the city of Bonn.

Xavier Leton's insight:

THEME

With “The Call of the Wild” as its subject, VIDEONALE.15 invites artists from all over the world to submit moving-image-based works which deal with the Wild as a space of possibility for new ways of thinking, seeing and being aware.

Which emotional, aesthetic, social and political conditions can nowadays be associated with “the Wild”? Does it embody the potential for describing new, still emerging fields of activity, depiction and thought which, for example, have their origins in the revision of traditional ideas about sexuality and race, the call for new forms of political and cultural participation, the breakdown of supposedly well regulated systems – as shown by the banking crisis and the monitoring scandals, the development of ever newer digital worlds of images and activities? How does the Wild inscribe itself in the moving image nowadays? And how do these images express the still unclearly defined state of this awakening? More information on the theme can be found in the pdf “Call for Entries”.

PRIZES
The works exhibited will compete for the Videonale Prize of the KfW Foundation, worth 5.000 euros, and the KfW Public Prize, worth 3.000 euros.

“If one thinks of a classic ‘upstairs/downstairs’ scenario, it is no longer clear where the robots will be lodging” (Turkle, 2010)

We are on the verge of a robotic revolution, a revolution that has long been foreshadowed by science fiction such as Karel Čapek’s play R.U.R (Rossum’s Universal Robots) in 1920 and Isaac Asimov’s first collection of stories I, Robot in 1950. Today, robots are infiltrating our everyday lives, in the form of complex toys, household appliances, and assistants in therapy, eldercare and education. Billions of dollars are being spent every year to turn machines into co-inhabitants, co-workers, assistants, carers, and entertainers. Together with autonomous, self-driving cars and Amazon’s delivery drones, robots promise to radically change our lives in the very near future.
