Since the internet entered the public domain in the early 90's there has been an explosion in artistic interest in its use as a means, site and context for creative practice.  Much of this practice is performative in nature; ether originating from a performance background and using the internet as a new site and/or augmenting aspect of that practice or is a form of practice developed as direct response to the internet and becomes performative to some degree in its spectatorship.

Xavier Leton's insight:

Kosta Boda believes art should be owned by the person who feels the strongest for it. That's why we arranged the world's first auction completely based on emotions, in Stockholm, Sweden.

More than 300 people placed bids on three unique art glass pieces, worth in total over € 25 000. Biometric sensors were used to determined who had the strongest emotional reaction to the art.

Disobedient Images | open! | confettis | Scoop.it

Marco Scotini is the curator of the ongoing Disobedience Archive project, a video station and discussion platform that focuses on the relationship between artistic practices and political action. In this text, Scotini focuses on the Autonomia movement of 1977 and the Italian underground filmmaker Alberto Grifi, who is considered a cinema pioneer who anticipated contemporary disobedience cinema. Scotini analyses Grifi’s film Festival of the Young Proletariat at Parco Lambro and offers his reflections on social disobedience in relation to mediatisation and representation

Xavier Leton's insight:

Autonomia and the Politics of Representation

The contemporary forms of social mobilisation breaking out everywhere across the globalised space have some things in common: the refusal of representation, new ways of political visualisation and the experimentation with forms of organisation that deviate from modern political tradition, a tradition that delegates power to representatives of the people and social classes.

From the 1999 protests in Seattle to the recent demonstrations of the many international Occupy movements, from Zapatista uprisings to the Arab and Turkish insurrections, there is an identical transformative tension (global, chaotic, plural) that has never stopped to act.

Xavier Leton's insight:

Befaco.org: SDIY: Building your own Synth

Befaco.org: SDIY: Building your own Synth | confettis | Scoop.it

This article tries to answer some usual questions to those who first confront the challenge of making a synthesizer, and by extension, any other sound device. This is not a technical text by far, just some tips from the four year life of our DIY modular synth platform. We hope this can help people that plan to build a modular synthetiser.

Xavier Leton's insight:
Why making it?

The feeling of making music with a machine built by oneself is something hard to describe. Each button is where you wanted it and the way you wanted , so communication user/ machine (and hence user/ music) is pretty straightforward.

You also have the simple desire of learning things. We can´t forget that the electronic musician depends on electronics, and understanding should be considered a part of the unavoidable technical path to music. The tiny electrons are the raw material to shape your ideas, and electronics will help you understand them better.

Thanks to the proliferation of the DIY community, it’s easier than ever to get a synth with the best specifications for a fraction of their ancestor´s price .

Can I do it?

The answer is yes…as long as you do not rush and work carefully.

Enjoy the process and be patient, as this is the difference between a rewarding experience and a nightmare.

Electronics is an extensive science, but you don´t need to know everything or be an engineer to build a synth. To start you just need to learn to solder, to distinguish the components using a multimeter and some mechanical skills such as drilling, accurately measuring or cutting wood.  Afterwards doubts will arise, answers will come and you will expand your knowledge gradually.

Contrary to what may seem, it´s not needed complex math knowledge to build a synth . Having some theoretical basis helps, although it’s not essential.

Note that it´s not the same building than designing an instrument. The first is a mechanical process rather than an intellectual exercise. The second is a much more complicated issue that requires a lot of both worlds… and years of work . Of course , do not let that intimidate you. It is best to start small and understand things well.

The key is to properly and slowly assimilate things so you don´t get overwhelmed… Just one step after the other!

The Third International Conference on Transdisciplinary Imaging at the Intersections of Art, Science and Culture

Cloud and Molecular aesthetics
Xavier Leton's insight:

The Third Transdisciplinary Imaging Conference at the intersections of art, science and culture will present papers that explore the theme of the cloud and molecular aesthetics. Clouding occurs when information becomes veiled, foggy, fuzzy, obscure or secretive, or when it condenses, blooms and accretes into atmospheres of chaotic turbulence and pressure vectors, into tidal flows and storms. The cloud also is a new formation of data as a global and seemingly immaterial distribution of storage and means of retrieval. This data cloud exists everywhere and yet is nowhere in particular.

Lecturer: Lauren Reid

This course will explore interesting strategies in exhibition-making and ways of thinking about curating by sharing a wide variety of innovative curatorial approaches that are designed to inspire.Expanding Exhibitions is for emerging and established curators who want to open up ways of thinking about their practice from the white cube and beyond.

This course will track significant moments in curatorial history and stimulating case studies, but rather than covering the field chronologically, it will instead focus on key themes and debates within exhibition-making such as the role of the curator, working with time-based media, exhibiting outside the art space and thinking globally. It will cross both inventive exhibition strategies as well as curatorial ethics that will provide opportunity for lively debate and the sharing of ideas between each other each week.

"The Soft, the Hard and the Wet" Residence Donautics Curated by SHU LEA CHEANG

"The Soft, the Hard and the Wet" Residence Donautics Curated by SHU LEA CHEANG | confettis | Scoop.it

“The Soft, the Hard and the Wet” brings together three artists - Afroditi Psarra , Ce Quimera and Robertina Sebjanic - who respectively apply soft circuit, open hardware and bioart / wetlab in their installation and performance.

Xavier Leton's insight:

Lab 1: The Soft

AFRODITI PSARRA (Athens) proposes “Divergence” with a wearable EMF detector. The soft-circuitry garment embedded with a LilyPad Arduino microcontroller and two embroidered coils serving as antennas, intervenes the electromagnetic field that encircles us. The strength of the signals detected manifests itself in the haptic feedback experienced in the form of vibration patterns and sonic feedback in the forms of variant pitches. This formally constructed wearable locates the physicality of human body in perceiving and countering the invisible forces that propagate around us in the form of EM waves. http://afroditipsarra.com

Lab 2: The Hard

CE QUIMERA (Barcelona) proposes “There is no body without F[R]ICTION”. F[R]ICTION as a DIY electronic device is built on a synthesizer. The mutant body modified with prostheses situates herself within an expandable architectural space littered with recycled electronic devices. The body/space collide, f(r)ictional sound elements generated. Noise makes up the chaotic imaginary, disrupting the narrative linearity. As a member of Quimera Rosa lab, Ce’s work aims to create a new subjective fiction of body,  playing on the border between body/environment, reality/fiction, human/machine, flesh/plastic, touch/sound. http://quimerarosa.tumblr.com

Lab 3: The Wet

ROBERTINA SEBJANIC (Ljubljana) proposes “Hydra reminiscence” with an Eleonore’s own DIY wetlab made up with DIY microscope and biotech tools a la Hackteria doctrine. Featuring Hydra, a biologically immortal fresh water animal capable of self-regenerative, as the research subject under the torrents of the Danube, Sebjani plans to conduct a series of experiments in exploring the regenerative properties of Hydra cells. While her study considers human’s eternal quest for prolonged and healthier life span, she aims to create an ambiental poetic immersive performance. http://wiki.ljudmila.org/Uporabnik:Robertina

@Leonardo On-Line: #Archiving, #Collecting, #Documenting and #Conserving the #Media_Arts

Xavier Leton's insight:

Throughout the 20th century and certainly at an increasing pace since the 1960s, new art forms that feature technological components have been throwing traditional conservation and documentation practices into upheaval. These works of art are many and varied. They may be analog or digital, mechanical, and/or electronic; they are often multimedia based and include a variety of components, such as mechanical parts, software, electronic systems, varied electronic media formats, etc. Museums, which are charged with preserving and providing access to these works, often find themselves without adequate resources and must make do with methods and means that are poorly adapted to a growing number of artistic practices.

Guest Editors Jean Gagnon and Alain Depocas from the Daniel Langlois Foundation (Montreal) invite researchers, scholars, artists and others to submit articles for publication in a new special section in Leonardo concerned with documenting and conserving the media arts heritage. This new section is the journal's contribution to a larger research alliance bringing together museums, universities and organizations from Canada, the U.S.A. and Europe with funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Daniel Langlois Foundation.

For the next 3 years, this section in Leonardo will publish articles and reports arising out of the alliance's ongoing research. We wish to invite authors concerned about this constellation of problems to propose articles to Leonardo. We welcome articles under the following three programmatic headings:

- documentation
- cataloging
- conservation

Manuscripts should be submitted to the Leonardo Editorial office.
