9th ADA Auckland Symposium, Fri 12 – Sun 14 September. Venue: AUT City Campus, WG Sir Paul Reeves Building, 55 Wellesley St East Space : Network : Memory recognises that the situation of post-quake, post-‘blueprint’, transitional Christchurch generates problems and possibilities for all of Aotearoa/New Zealand. The Auckland symposium will continue this discussion, delving further into questions of social density and the built environment. Space : Network : Memory invites proposals for provocations, panel participation and presentations of work engaging with aspects of the broad range of practices and approaches necessary for rethinking the contemporary city, the networks that surround and emerge from it, and the memories and futures it holds. Space : Network : Memory will include artists, designers, scientists, media practitioners and performers, urban planners, historians, theorists, curators, writers, educators, and storytellers. Provocation: What roles are digital networks playing in our ability to reveal and understand the layers of a city? How does this affect contemporary practices in art, architecture, urban planning and related fields? Space : Network : Memory is a multi-city symposium that emerged out of the events and transitional architectures of Christchurch, engaging in discussions of urban space, social engagement, memory and speculative futures. We invite responses that might engage physically, psychologically, spiritually and/or playfully with the visible and hidden structures and systems of Auckland / Tamaki Makaurau. July 18&19 - Conference: Art, Politics, Ideology - Bard College Berlin

July 18&19 - Conference: Art, Politics, Ideology - Bard College Berlin | Conferences on the Arts | Scoop.it
In contemporary debates within philosophy as much as in the arts, it seems impossible not to confirm the assumption that art is political. The question can be raised whether the evidence of art’s political dimension does not ultimately function in the same way ideological statements function, namely as evidences. Art as a material practice is assumed to intervene as such into the realm of the social and political sphere, and is thereby attributed a sovereignty of reflection that no other practice could ever reach. Following an impulse of critical theory, may it not become necessary to again free art from politics, to start with a philosophical and in a specific sense ideological decision of their separateness that allows for an understanding of art and politics as autonomous processes and practices? It therefore seems necessary to redefine the relation between art and politics as well as between art and philosophy by questioning, as deconstruction always suggested, what is at stake in all singular elements of this three-partite constellation, namely art, politics and ideology. If not only art has to be conceived of as an autonomous practice and if this cannot only be done by separating art from politics and vice versa, what one needs to account for is both: art’s autonomy as well as its possible political relevance and its effects in philosophy. One may need a renewed concept of art as much as of politics and ultimately of their relation. A renewed positive conception of ideology might--and this is the task the conference sets for itself--precisely here find its place, namely to account for an effective non-relation between art and politics.

Media, Community and the Creative Citizen

Media, Community and the Creative Citizen | Conferences on the Arts | Scoop.it
Creative Citizens: the conference Royal College of Art, London September 18-19 2014 Call for Papers Creative citizens make new things happen in their communities. Their activities are vital to civic life but also to the creative economy, where their contribution mostly goes uncounted. They invent new ways of delivering music, visual art, film and literature. They come together as fans; they make things, sharing space and place. They ensure that community news is gathered and shared and that local authority plans and building designs reflect the ideas of those most affected. The conference is the climax of a 20 month multidisciplinary research project, Media Community and the Creative Citizen which explores the dynamics of creative citizenship in the context of digital media. We ask how social media are affecting the value and sustainability of creative citizenship and, with our community partners around the UK, we experiment with co-created media interventions to enhance networks of creative citizenship in Bristol, Birmingham & London.
