Delmai George's insight:

This game takes the idea of social media sharing out of control and puts it into a game where a memory hunter steals and modifies peoples memories.  Scary thought!  While this may be fantasy, this could help students understand how important it is to be careful about what they share on the internet.

3 Things I Wish Everyone Knew about Gamification

3 Things I Wish Everyone Knew about Gamification | Computer games in Classrooms | Scoop.it

I think that every educator should have some grounding in game design before they attempt to integrate gamification or games-based learning into a classroom.

Delmai George's insight:

This blog post lists three points to understanding the process of gamifying  the classroom -

#1: Schooling is already a game - not all games are 'good' so gamification won'te improve a 'bad' game

#2: Gamification is not a magic bandaid - it takes time and effort to implement and must be continually monitored for how successful it is in moving students toward their learning goals

#3: It's not about points - grades are already the extrinsic motivator for learning, so just changing the reward won't mean success

WIGI Work-Learn-Play

WIGI Work-Learn-Play | Computer games in Classrooms | Scoop.it

LOS ANGELES (April 17, 2013) – Women in Games International (WIGI) and the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles (GSGLA) announced today they are working together to create the first video game patch for Girl Scouts. Both GSGLA and WIGI hope the initiative will give Girl Scouts an incentive to pursue an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects, and show them possible career options in the video game industry.

Delmai George's insight:

Scouts have used badges as part of their training for young members for a very long time.  But even they must adapt.  This badge has been introduced to get young girls excited about a career in technology and science, using the Gamestar Mechanic program to develop computer coding skills.

Reading, writing and computer coding -- the basics of the future | Schools | News from F...

Entrepreneurs, educators and celebrities push for more students to learn how to write computer programs.
Delmai George's insight:

This article discusses how important learning computer programming is for the future.  The author, Diane Smith, sees it as an important everyday skill, just like reading and writing. Game-based learning: latest evidence and future directions

Game-based learning: latest evidence and future directions | Computer games in Classrooms | Scoop.it

The role of video games in teaching and learning is a source of debate among many educators, researchers and in the popular press. Detractors and advocates have been discussing the influences and the potentials of video games for quite some time, and we feel that sound evidence and informed advice on these topics is still very much needed. Against this background, Futurelab at NFER felt that it was timely to provide practitioners, industry and researchers with an up-to-date account of what the evidence tells us about game-based learning and its potential impact on learning and teaching.
