Overview of LING 421
The course of LING421 covered 12 chapters in this semester, including history of CALL (computer assisted language learning), CALL& technology, technology using in second language acquisition, evaluation of courseware and websites, using technologies skills for studying language (listening, reading, writing), computer-mediated communication, culture & telecollaboration, digital literacies and online communities (exploring digital games and social networking).
I have learnt a lot from this course. Because I used to be a teacher, I have never thought to make a combination between computer and pedagogy until I learnt this course. It is pity that we just use computer for playing game or chatting. However, computer can be used to learning foreign languages which have brought many advantageous for our language learner.
There are five words throughout this course, including culture, connections, comparisons, communities, and communications, which can be called 5C. The two chapters left deep impression for me. First of all, it is how to use the technology for second language reading comprehension. It might be I did the presentation for this area. We can see the ability of reading is very important for second language learners. There are three aspects can be used to improve the ability of reading, which of one is word recognition. We can use the tool assisted to know the word meaning, for example, if we are reading a book online, some new words we do not know, the new word is clicked, then the meaning of this word will be shown up. Readers are easily to learning a new word. This way is not only improving the speed of reading, but also give the readers more interests to read the book firmly. The second way is that language comprehension. There are many tools can be used to support language comprehension, such as electronic dictionaries, computer software, web-based activities. These types of instrument can assist learners who are in struggling in vocabulary learning. The other method is called text interpretation which refers that learners can hypothesize the meaning of this word according to understanding of its text genres, texts structures, formality, metaphor, register and culture. I think that all of three ways is assisted to improve students reading ability effectively. There are other language skill give me a deep impression which is about learning culture through CALL. The 3P have motioned what we have learnt, practices, perspectives and products, respectively. Practices are related that the ways of behavior which is accepted by a society and refer to one aspects of culture. For example, a particular group of people perform a ceremony which can be seen a part of culture. Perspectives refer to the traditional concept and principle of a culture. Products can be divided several of type’s tangible products and intangible products. Tangible products can be clearly seen to exist that you can touch and feel. On the other hand, intangible products refers that you could not touch or see it, it is unclearly and complex. All in all, technology are using to learn second language culture, reading, and many language skill can be improved though CALL.
I will talk about my experience since I chose this course. Because I want to be a teacher, so my teacher recommended me to chose this course. He told me you would get a totally difference ideas for learning language. When I went to the class, I found that I could not understand what the teacher said. I always said to myself it was my fault, I have to insist on. Because I could not get our text book in the beginning class, so I did not know what I should do after class. About 4 weeks later, we had a break. The first assignment we had to write because of my poor listening, I did not understand what the teacher told us. Unfortunately, I did not do it. I’m very thankful that teacher gives me a chance to finish it after a week. After that, many assignments have piled together, I had to rush just for finishing the assignment, I even have no time to think some idea deeply. As a international student, I find many problems when I study in New Zealand. Because of different educational system, I am trying to adapt the educational method. In china, we have the 20 hours every week, so students spend most of time in the class, they have not too much assignment after class. Students just finish what the teacher requirement, so the answer must be found on the text book. However, western educational system is totally different from us, it is a few of class every week, about 2hour once a week for one paper, but students have to spend an amount of time after class. Especially, students could not easy find the answer on the text book. I have been frustrating about this point. Fortunately, I find the advantageous of this educational system which to push you thinking and become more confident than before. I have challenged many difficulties since I chosen this paper, I believe I will do it better and better in the future.
