Big Data is a term that has been around for some time now but there is still confusion about what it actually is. The concept is continuing to evolve and to be reconsidered, as it remains the driving force behind many ongoing waves of digital transformation, including artificial intelligence, data science and the Internet of Things (IoT).

With that in mind I thought it was time to write a beginner’s guide to what Big Data means in 2017. In a similar way to my beginner’s guides to Blockchain and FinTech, this will be jargon-free and aims to explain the core concepts and ideas to anyone regardless of background knowledge.

OH YES, I remind very well that time! I learned programming in "BASIC" and made any program BETTER, adapted it to my needs, as it was very easy with "Basic"! ALREADY +/- 33 years ago, LOL ;) Monochrome Monitors (ONLY green...) and ONLY 8k of Memory (OK, 16k with upgrade...) with cassettes who needed to get tuned the magnet head sometimes for results, ===> OMG! <=== BUT #FUN :)

For those in Australia or places other than the UK who would like to understand more about what occurs in other places, this guide published in the UK aims to help develop a shared understanding of the teaching of computational thinking in schools. It presents a conceptual framework of computational thinking, describes pedagogic approaches for teaching and offers guides for assessment.

Earlier in November, Codecademy launched ReSkillUSA along with Thinkful, to reach out to the same community of under-employed workers. With the tagline “Make the skills gap end with you,” ReSkillUSA falls in line with the LaunchCode mission, if not its exact methods.

Still, both are no-cost or low-cost options for getting an education in programming, and taken together with a new credentialing program that General Assembly has launched in concert with a number of large technology and industrial companies, the new initiatives could be promising for future employment. Especially since the General Assembly credentialing tests are open to anyone.

If you have existing experience with organizing education events, you might just be interested in the main guidelines to follow when planning your #codeEU event:

Make the event beginner friendly, accessible even to those with no previous programming experience. Don't focus on the technicalities, try to show the fun and practical aspect of whatever technology is being used.The format of the event is up to you. We do however recommend to include at least practical, hands-on time, where participants can create something on their own. Even better if they can take what they've learned home to share with family and friends!You can use whatever tools and technologies you're most familiar with, although we do favor freely available open source tools and frameworks.Learning something completely new can be intimidating. A smile and a friendly atmosphere can help break the ice and make those, who don't consider themselves "technical", more at ease.It's also a good idea to plan a follow up. The culmination of my quest for more powerful learning grounded in theory and research came when recently I conducted an experiment in pushing constructionism into the digital age.

 

Constructionism is based on two types of construction. First, it asserts that learning is an active process, in which people actively construct knowledge from their experience in the world. People don’t get ideas; they make them. This aspect of construction comes from the constructivist theory of knowledge development by Jean Piaget. To Piaget’s concept, Papert added another type of construction, arguing that people construct new knowledge with particular effectiveness when they are engaged in constructing personally meaningful products.

Imagine my surprise and joy when I realized that I had arrived at constructionism prior to knowing that such a theory even existed. I believe that thousands of other educators are unknowingly working within the constructionist paradigm as well. Although many within the Maker movement are aware that it has it’s roots in constructionism, the movement is gaining impressive momentum without the majority of Makers realizing that there is a strong theoretical foundation behind their work.

 

After I came to understand this connection between my practices and the supporting theoretical framework I was better able to focus and refine my practice. Even more importantly, I felt more confident and powerful in forging ahead with further experiments in the learning situations I design for my learners.
