Beaver Country Day has launched a program this year to teach computer coding to every student, beginning with upperclassmen and eventually expanding down to sixth-graders. With leading technology companies pressing Massachusetts to make computer science classes available in every school system, Beaver Country Day is taking an unorthodox approach: Rather than teach it as a distinct course, Beaver is integrating coding into all of its subjects, experimenting with uses not only in math and science classes, but even in English and art.

A recent report from research firm Forrester claims that AI tools and robots will have eliminated only 6% of jobs by 2021. But, that's just the beginning.

An Oxford University study estimates that 47% of current US jobs could be done by computers in as little as two decades. But not all professions are vulnerable to automation.

Interesting argument. Not totally convinced. For example while Barristers look safe, most lawyers are Case Lawyers who do precedent-type research/review, and computers are likely to take over this role. Also limited reference to coders.

There's a disconnect between the rhetoric of a shortage of students pursuing degrees in STEM fields, and ongoing layoffs in the IT sector. What's going on?

An important rider: "...STEM covers an overly broad spectrum of disciplines, from mechanical engineering to marine biology." Not all these areas have a shortage. Perhaps we need to focus on IT skills more specifically as well as maintaining an "... educational system (that) produce(s) well-rounded, flexible learners who use technology as a tool ..."
